I was wanting to keep factory pipe. Is there a replacement muffler out there that is not terrible loud that will will help egt's and fit up without too much trouble.

Thanks.

Alot of people wanting to lower egts and keep the stock 3.5" pipe just delete the muffler. I ran a straight-piped dmax for a long while and saw similar reductions in egt as the 4" systems.

Unloaded or towing a small trailer a straight-piped dmax sounds down right mean. However, put hitch up something heavy and it gets very loud.

I started researching 3.5" alternative mufflers and came up with Spin Tech. They take a non-traditional approach and have no packing to worry about. The mufflers are used by pretty much every open wheel racer. That quieted my truck right down, but it also slightly increased the egts when towing.

I have sound clips of my different configs if you are interested. Not sure how to upload/link them to this message.

Flomaster makes a perfect fit. I installed one on my 2002 2500, seems to me the part number was 53553.

esmo77 had it right (see signature).

This muffler is only a tad louder than stock at idle, but produces the typical (and mean sounding IMHO!) Flowmaster growl at power. Some people who have just replaced muffler (with ?), have experienced a "drone". For the record, I have not noticed any "resonance" or "drone" and have had the muffler on for almost a year!:D

It is also a very easy install. Just cut the tailpipe off as close as possible on the rear of the stocker, measure the new, and cut in the appropriate spot on the front side. I did not have to add any pipe sections to make it work, either!

Good Luck and Regards,

I was wanting to do the same thing, Thanks for the info. Did anyone check to see if it lowered egt going from stock to flowmaster? Thanks again.

I had mine straight piped for awhile and it did lower the EGT's quite a bit... as far as that is concerned, I was impressed. It sounded really good during acceleration and cruising below 50MPH, but... cruising at highway speeds produced a very annoying drone in the cab, it maybe because I have a regular cab. The drone made it feel like my ears were echoing constantly and I hated it. I just welded the stock muffler back on, until I come across a muffler that will lower EGT's and keep the drone in check. As far as towing, it can get a little obnoxious! I was towing a 20ft trailer loaded with hay stacked 8 high front to back... it was loud and irritating while trying to talk on the cell phone to the person I was supposed to deliver to... I would suggest finding a good 4" system or a muffler that will lower EGT's and eliminate drone. Hope this helps!

The listing on the Flowmaster site says the part # s 953558, here is the page with sound clip.www.flowmastermufflers.com/cgi-bin/flowmaster/diesel.html?id=yjEby94r
I've been looking at it but haven't decided.
Hope this helps.

Do not use the part number given in the Flowmaster catalog!!! :Nonono:

There is a thread on this forum somewhere that talks about that part number (53558 aka the incorrect muffler) and a piece of stub pipe had to be added to make it work (per MTomac, I think). I ordered the 53553 at a local muffler shop and put it in with 2 cuts and 2 welds. The 53553 fits great and is a couple of inches longer than the 53558 (which SHOULD make it quieter, I think).

Thanks Goldsburg, I'm glad you told us that in case I decide to go with the Flowmaster.
That would have really irked me had I ordered it and cut my pipe.
Has it helped with the fuel or EGT's with yours.

Has anyone ever tried this exhaust on ebay?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7953782249&category=33630

When ever I am dinking around out there I see it. Just wondering if it was any good and if the muffler it comes with is too damn loud!

it's junk. poeple have complained about it. they say save your money.

As far as 3.5" pipe mufflers, there is also the aeroturbine muffler. They do make one that is 3.5" and almost sounds stock but it is free flowing.

isnt the flowmaster 53553 an offest configuration? meaning the inlet and out let are not in the center of the muffler? I have it straight piped right now and it seems to me like the replacement muffler would need to be a center in/out? -Jeff

Yes, the 53553 is offset, but it should be! Here some pics of my install:

hmm, interesting, looking at your pics it totally looks like it should be offset. when i put the straightpipe in a didnt curve it at all and i alwas wondered why it looked so funky, thanks for the pics!!!! -Jeff

btw, who has the best price on something like that??

Sorry that I forgot to take a pic of the tailpipe (and show that it is still at the stock angles). It was pitch dark out and I was pretty proud of the camera for getting that good of pics without even being able to see what I was "aiming" at...
........:iamwithst

Maybe the '02 exhaust is different in that area?

As far as price, I would use this:

http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=Flowmaster+53553&hl=en&lr=&tab=wf&scoring=p

Then call any of the supporting vendors and see if they can get close (and throw in free shipping?). I had mine installed at a local muffler shop for $150 out the door.
