My rims are really starting to "peel" and it's driving me nuts. Anyone have any suggestions on best course of action to fix this? Cannot just go buy aftermarket rims, the budget won't allow that. These rims are original 2004 factory set with 72k. I live in southeast Michigan..so if anyone knows where I can get them repaired etc.. I'd appreciate the help. Thanks!!!!!

We have to assume you're talking about painted wheels? I guess the factory alloys wouldn't "peel".

You can repaint them, just remove and mask off the tire. Your prep-work and paintwork will determine the final finish.

If you can shoot them with automotive urethane they'll be better than new.

Failing that, prime and paint them with rattle cans. You can get a couple'a more years out of them that way. If you get to bare metal by sanding, use a self-etching primer first.

Paint you get from an automotive paint jobber will be better than what you can get from walmart.

Thanks for getting back to me, but my rims are factory alloy, and there seems to be some sort of clearcoat that is peeling off and then the rim gets very dull and almost "scaly" looking. Anybody else got an idea????

I thought the factory had some recall on those rims. Go back to your dealer and maybe you can get new or refurbish ones.

Those wheels would look kick powder coated black. But I would check to see if the dealer can help you first. Just my 2 cents worth.

Yes, they are clearcoated. The only way to re-do that would be to strip them first which may prove more difficult than the refinish. Plus, clearcoat urethane is fairly expensive, and you would need to shoot them with a gun.

When I bought new wheels the store (Devin at Wheel Warehouse, Anaheim, excellent!) gave me $200 for the stock alloys with good tires on them. I've bought at least a dozen sets of wheels from them. If you're happy with the factory alloy I'm sure somebody on here will make you a helluva deal on a set when they upgrade. You would spend at least half that trying to refinish the ones you've got.

I don't like the factory alloy because it's too narrow. It looks okay but a 285 tire doesn't even fit right on it. A a lot of guys run them anyway. They're like 6.5" or 7" wide. An aftermarket 9 or 9.5" works with the bigger tires, but yeah, a ton of dough. I've got a couple of grand in mine and they're not even huge like some of the trucks out there.

Thanks for all the help, I actually got an "almost new" set of takeoffs locally for $100.00.
