Anybody have any shift problems while towing with 265 tires on?????????? Heard alot of people loose 5th gear with 285s. Does this happen with 265s???

I certainly don't think you're going to "loose" fifth; don't worry, because it will still be there! However, raising your effective gear ratio by using larger tires may prevent the Ally from shifting into fifth when pulling heavy, but it shouldn't be an all the time type of deal. With 265's, I wouldn't worry about it.

No problems since I changed to the 265/85R16's and I've been running that size for 80,000 miles and alot of that has been towing. 4 horse partial living quarters or 28' tri-axle flat deck hauling hay.

My experience with 265 75R16 have been very positive. Good towing, no rubs, and no modifications necessary. 285's sucked big time, poor towing (holding 5th gear was out of the question), lots of trimming and still rubbed on the sway bay. To answer your question, no you don't loose 5th gear with 265's.

I run 285's and have since I bought mine new December 2003. I tow about 4000 to 5000 lbs daily and haven't had any problems unless I am going uphill with a good head wind. I sometimes tow heavier and still had no problems.
I have not towed anything over 10,000 lbs so I can not speak for that amount of weight.
Also, I have had my truck off in the boonies several times to the point of dragging the frame and twisting the truck till the doors were moaning, and I have yet to have tire scrub.

Maybe I should have elaborated on towing poorly with 285 series tires....When I mean tow, I'm refering heavy loads. My 5er weighs 15,300 lbs. I did notice a difference on lighter loads also, but not as much as the 5er.

Did you put the 285's on the stock 6.5" rims? If so, I've heard it does not rub like they will when they're on the proper size rims (8").

I wouldn't be towing much of a load with 285's on the stock rims thats for sure. I have 265 BFG KO's and that's the largest I would go on the 6.5" rims. I had to go to 4 different shops to get anything other than the 245's mounted on the stock rims.

I have 265's and you don't lose fifth. It does seem to like sticking around 70-75 mph towing though. I towed my fathers 11,000 lb boat to the keys with no probs. Juice and attitude of course. I researched the 285's and if you don't plan on doing other mods and don't wish to crank, trim,or cut anything go with the 265's. They look fine and people stop asking if it really is a 4-wheel drive truck.
