: New Duramax Silverado: The GOOD & the BAD
LukeB 04-23-2008, 07:20 PM Bought my new 08 Duramax 6.6 2500HD Silverada LT last month.
GOOD POINTS:
--Tons of power.
--Great ride for a 3/4 ton truck.
--Great in the snow and 4x 4 .
--Good Power train warrenty at 5 yrs or 100000km.
BAD POINTS:
--Rear tire pressure monitor alarm set at just below 70 lbs, which is the maximum pressure with maximum payload of about 9800lbs. Which means that when I try to drop the pressure in the rear tires for a better and SAFER ride when the truck in not loaded (which is 99% of the time) I get an alarm and idiot light in the dash.
Lack of forsight and common sence of GM's part there.
--The interior is very cheap and come a long way down hill in quality since my last pickup which was a 98 Chevy.
I had to have cloth seats because I wanted the split bench. (better for the family than buckets)
The cloth is SO thin and cheap looking, and feels paper thin.
I went out and got seat covers for it.
--The exaust pipe sticks out past the rear bumper,so if you happen to back into anything, the TAIL PIPE becomes the bumper.
More lack of thoughtfullness by the Engineering gods at GM.
The remote factory remote start only works from about 20 yards away.
This is explained in the manual as follows: The actual "Start" button works from about 60 to 100 yards away, BUT you have to press the "Lock" button before you can press the "Start" button. The "Lock" button has a range of only about 20 yards!
THERFORE you cannot remote start the truck behond about 20 yards!
More ingenious oversite by GM engineers!
Call me picky, but I like to believe that when you pay $50,000.00 for a new truck you shouldent have to put up with crappy little things like these.IMO.
**Anyone else have these things on their peeve list?
Cant wait to get my customer survey letter to fill out.
Over all tho, not a bad truck. Only got 1500 km on it so far. Well see what the future holds.
Cheers all...:)
gmduramax 04-23-2008, 07:25 PM I can remote start my truck from 100 yards away :confuzeld
LukeB 04-23-2008, 07:28 PM I can remote start my truck from 100 yards away :confuzeld
Do you have to push the lock button first?
huthuthut 04-23-2008, 07:30 PM Of course, everyone with LMM remote start does. Mine works at 100 yards too.
LukeB 04-23-2008, 07:32 PM Of course, everyone with LMM remote start does. Mine works at 100 yards too.
Thanks.
Ill talk to my dealer about it.
Ptnomore 04-23-2008, 07:41 PM I'm having leather put on at the dealer. I had to have the split bench also. When the truck comes in, I get to pick out the leather swatches and pretty much design the covers myself. I may cancel that and get the Katskins instead though and save myself about $500. Just a thought.
The exhaust pipe looks like azz whether it sticks out too far or not. NOthing that a sawzall and chrome tip from Autozone won't fix.
Tanc Crusher 04-23-2008, 09:06 PM Mine defiantly works at 40yds through the brick wall. And would say at least 80yds outside on the passenger side of the truck. That is where I believe the remote portion is located in the PSDM Passenger Side Door Module. May have have to measure it out tomorrow. Just got my Helms manuals today in the mail for my 2007.5 for the GMT-900 platform. Measures about 8inches thick all stacked up. About 1 inch thicker than my 2003 Avalanche manuals. May have to throw in a support for the shelf for all that. HAHAHA.

badinblack 04-23-2008, 09:10 PM Mine works from between 80-100 yards.
down4bmx 04-23-2008, 09:11 PM Go to your local dealer and have them set your TPMS range in the back larger.. You have get them to have set have 6lbs difference from what it set at or go more... I went 10lbs of what the factory settings are at allows me to drop pressure alittle more and not have the light come on...
csx5197 04-23-2008, 09:42 PM I always found GM key fobs to have the best range. My dad's truck was usually able to lock his truck from really far away. Made it nice when it was night and couldn't remember how far away we parked.
jim87vette 04-23-2008, 09:52 PM Sounds like a couple of your problems should be an easy fix.Enjoy the truck.
hodgeswd 04-24-2008, 12:28 AM 3500 6.6L Silverado LTZ
Good:
Large/big size/space and hauling. Lifted, makes wife happy.
Leather heated seats in winter.
Interior design, presentable.
Rearview mirror auto dem
Camper mirrors adjusted for hauling and some blind spots.
Same MPG with and without trailering/hauling.
Bad:
Gas MPG.
Note: Seat cover for summer.
Remote start at 20 yards.
Turning radius/parking (as if everyone should have compact cars in this world)
Exhaust tip
Can break loose on wet street/freeway.
Govener at 95 MPH.
Not sure yet:
Hopefully we get great or at least better customer service with Chevrolet than we did with Toyota.
csx5197 04-24-2008, 09:11 AM hodges is your truck a crew cab? I wouldn't really expect a crew cab dually to turn on a dime
DURAtotheMAX 04-24-2008, 09:26 AM you really think your old truck has a nicer quality interior than your new duramax????
I know its oppinion, but Im just surprised at that...
WilliamBos 04-24-2008, 09:44 AM The exhaust pipe looks like azz whether it sticks out too far or not. NOthing that a sawzall and chrome tip from Autozone won't fix.
And you will find out how cheap that chrome tip is on the first regen cycle, and I am sure it won't look pretty afterwards.
Function over form.
LeadfootDuramax 04-24-2008, 09:48 AM Window tint can cut down on alarm range. If you have added tint, that is going to affect it.
Honestly I found all your coments odd. A 1998 truck interor is horrable so I don't understand that at all...
The tip has to be there for the DPF it not a GM thing is the law...
MPG of a gasser? I guess if you have your foot threw the floor board..
Fulton 1 04-24-2008, 10:21 AM The stock "bazooka" exhaust tip is by far the worst I have ever seen. Ford did a much better job with their's IMO. Luckily this is easily solved with an aftermarket setup.
The TPMS leaves a lot to be desired. Simply allowing the user to adjust the range via the DIC would have been a very nice option. Not sure if such adjustability would present a a legal issue. I had to go round and round with my dealer before they would adjust for my D-load tires. Based on prior lawsuits for similar activity they were pretty gunshy. Bottom line is that this is a needlessly complicated device, for which we should ultimately thank our over-nannying government. Annoying.
I haven't tried my remote start above maybe 20 yards so I can't comment on that.
I do get more interior rattles than I would have hoped from a new truck, but I'm a lifelong GM owner and gave pretty much grown used this kind of thing. My mud tires contribute to the problem, so some of it is my own doing.
Otherwise I am very pleased with this truck so far. I definitely feel I made the right decision in purchasing it.

Cirrus 04-24-2008, 05:46 PM My remote lock/start works at over 200 ft away, and
I got split bench seats with leather...so far I'm pretty happy.

I dont know why everyone refers to their truck as costing as much as what it says on the sticker.....
BusterMcC 04-24-2008, 10:46 PM 08 LTZ Loaded $42K, very happy with quality, the stock exhaust looks great out behind the shed. Magnaflow muffler delete
austin7176 04-25-2008, 08:41 AM Like everyone else mine locks and starts from about 100yds.
cbiers 04-25-2008, 10:21 AM i kinda agree, on my '98 the cloth seats seem thicker, or a heavier type of material than the new pickups i've been in. don't get me wrong i love the new interiors, as i have one ordered but it seems they 'cheapen' up things. Such as body panels, they seem so much thinnner when you tap on them then the ones on my '98.
Dieseldad97 04-25-2008, 10:36 AM I dont know why everyone refers to their truck as costing as much as what it says on the sticker.....
The truck may Canadian. That would explain the higher sticker.
