I had a friend I trust tell me that these rear axles like the one in my 2005 can be a weak point. From what I can see searching this forum, it is not an issue and the trans would be a problem before the rear end. BUT, I have given some thought to a diff cover with cooling fins and extra capacity.

Please provide your opinions! I tow 7500 - 8000 pounds a few thousand miles a year.

Thanks!

I have not heard of this, of coarse there will be the extremes. Like the people who race or sled pull. I know the older versions were sought after upgrades, and the newer 11.5 14 bolts are stronger than that.

the rear axle is very good on these trucks, don't worry about it.

ask him how exactly can a full floating 600 pound axle with an 11.5" ring gear can be a "weak point".

You will blow up so many other parts of the drivetrain before the rear axle gives up.:)

That's kinda what I was picking up on. Of course, he is one of those guys on the "extreme" side of things and I'm not.

Are all these rear ends 11.5" ring gear?

Many more weak points before the axle, again unless you're running some insane power.

I think they are not going to make them anymore because AAM won't be making the axle parts but i could be wrong. this is of course with newer trucks.
