A friend who's big into boating says that it is common practice to replace headbolts in diesels every so many hours. They replace them one at a time, and don't change head gaskets or open the engine. Is this something that should be done on the Dmax every 150 to 200K? Is this practice obsolete on torque to yield bolts?

not worth the trouble unless you have trouble IMO. They should not loosen up as they are TTY bolts.

they are TTY bolts.
TTY bolts? Teletype? Please educate the ignorant.

Torque to yield. Means torque to a certain value, then tighten a certain rotation more. This type of bolt should only be used once since you stretch to get the holding force you require.

Hard working diesels fatigue the head bolts, and they can break. I know boat engines work harder than most other applications, because the load is there all the time. Also, boat engines tend to be pushed to much higher hp output levels than the equivalent industrial engines. Perhaps that is why it isn't so important in intermittent load applications. I don't know if the head bolt changeout is done with TTY bolts; anybody know if they are very common on diesels other than Dmax?

Is changing the headbolts one at a time not yanking the head a bright idea or not? Sounds kinda 1/2 assed to me but I duno? Are the holes in the block blind or do they go into water passages or what? Just wondering what one might be in for if one were wanting to swap the TTY bolts for head studs

one at a time will be fine for doing studs Phil... I plan on doing quite a few of them in the next few weeks that way....you can tell racing season is just around the corner....turbos, injectors, lockers, traction bars.....

hmmmmmm.........if I had studs that would be an instant WTF moment for a tech looking at my truck and warantee going bye bye I assume. Unless I made another road trip;)

do you have to re-torque studs after a certian #of hours? this would be a pain in the arse to have to pull the top components off again to do this.
