hi just got my first diesel truck 03 gmc 2500hd crew cab and just wondering what you guys use for oil in it i know it says 15w 40 but i cant find any mobil 1 in 15w 40 its only 5w 40 truck and suv any of you guys use it it says its ok on the mobil web site that it is Recommended for the duramax thanks

Delvac 1 here (made by mobil). I believe it is the same as mobil 1 truck and suv. I think that delvac 1 comes in gallons where the truck and suv come in quarts (at least from what I have seen here). Napa should carry the Delvac 1. BTW I am just running the 5w-40. It should cover every aspect here in AK.

I run Mobil Delvac 1300 15w40. Works great for me.

Quite a Few guys I know here in Oregon run Delo 400 15w-40.

I run Schaefffers 7000 Supreme and it works good for me.

I'm running Valvoline "Blue" Extreme Duty Synthetic 5W40. Switched truck over at 5K miles and now at 50K miles with no problems. Doesn't seem to use much, either.

Schaffers has a full synthetic? Any details?

I run schaffers 7000 semisynthetic in the winter and sheel rotella in the summer just becasue its free.

Phil, its just a month or so on the market. Not much more then anything else at 16.00 per gallon.

If you have problem finding it, just go to your local car parts like O'Reillys and ask them to order you a case.

Get mine for $19.71 a gallon, but I must buy in case lots since they dont normally stock it. Case = 4 gallons.

I Run AMSOIL 15W-40 Synthetic, its supposedly better than Mobile 1. You should run that in your truck with their SDF-52 oil filter and that should cover you for about 10 thousand miles. You can try their website, Amsoil.com. Its great stuff, I used it in my old 1991 Silverado it went 300,000 miles on the stuff before the tranny went out and I got my HD.

Shell Rotella T 15w-40, its what my dad has always ran in our old CAT 3208 in our boat. I am still undecided if I am going to switch over to synthetic at about 10k miles.

we talked to a mechanic that works on diesels, and he says that, to him, synthetic is just a waste of money, and just to use the regular kind... He's an Amsoil dealer too, but that's just my 2 cents

nate16, I've been an AMSOIL dealer for 24 years and I have almost 200 regular customers who would heartily disagree with that mechanic. I have used these products myself and know the difference. I can't see any possible way I could have kept my zeal for these products if there wasn't any difference in performance or wear and tear. But in all fairness, almost every lubricating product in existence today has greatly improved over the past 10 years. The same lubricants we use here in the USA that the oil manufacturers recommend to be changed from 3,000 - 7,000 miles are routinely used in Europe for 10,000 miles and soon will be going to 15,000 mile drains. In 1975 AMSOIL, NEO, All Proof and Mobil 1 were advertised as 25,000 mile extended drain lubricants. 30 years later AMSOIL and NEO are still at 25,000 mile/1 year drain intervals and Mobil 1 is just re-entering the extended drain market with their 15,000/1 year synthetic. Do a Google search on NEO and Mobil 1 and read their websites. I also recently read somewhere that Eaton Corp. will extend the warranty period on their over the road differentials if the customer will use synthetic lubes. I don't think they would do that if there wasn't a difference.

I really hope that at some point in time you have a chance to try a synthetic product and decide for yourself. Here's a thought. A quick and fairly inexpensive way to see if there is a difference between synthetic and regular lubes is to just change the fluid in your rear differential. Try Mobil 1. It's a great product and probably more readily available than AMSOIL products are to you. My sense is you will be able to feel a seat of the pants difference right away.

If you're ever in the SW Michigan area drop in for a cup of coffee and visit my shop. I do oil changes, drive line lube changes, transmission flushes, etc., for everything that will get through my 10' overhead door. My shop is only 30'X50' and I don't like working on my back in the driveway in winter her in Michigan.

My son lives in VA and has a 2002 DMax Crew Cab w8' box and even the wheel bearings are greased with AMSOIL. We put Super Shift trans fluid in the Allison and no longer have a lazy 3-4 shift.

Please understand, I'm not trying to be a smart alec. Maybe that mechanic just hasn't had time to use and/or study synthetics. I hope he gets that chance soon.

I don't know about that. I use synthetic myself because of what learned through carefull study and research but other than graphs and tests that I've read that show the advantages I've never really noticed anything different. They seem to hold up better to heavy abuse thats for sure but certainly nothing to the effect of actually feeling a difference. I don't want to rain on your parade but sometimes people believe something because they want to. I do however recomend using a synthetic or at the very least a semi for piece of mind. My $.02.

I agree with most posts here about the diffrence in syn an dino...i use shell and delvec syn...i use syn when i drive more miles away from home and i can't do regular oil chnages at 3,000 miles between. for all it's worth i feel safer with dino...knowing that it's been there since automotive been around...beside changing every 3k miles gives me a excuse to get out of my wife's hair....and play with my real toy!!!! Both oils are good this is like comparing pepsi vs coca cola..

First off I am a licensed marine engineer with a 3rd class power plant operating license and oils are a huge part of my job. Someone may have said this already but the key part of syn's is the molecular makeup. I am not trying to be a know it all. the moleculars are all spheres versus reg oil is a mess of shapes. tryin rolling marbles in your hand versus dices and its very clear why they work some much better. also for those of us in the north they don't thicken up and make a much better for cold starting. anyway i use royal purple syn 15w-40- no complaints

Dealers I simply in the game to make money. From their perspective the faster the trucks wear out the better ...I doubt they would recommend anything to prolong the life of any vehicle. It has always made me wonder what type of oil comes out of the dealer oil gun that's hooked to some bulk oil tank. :) Probably don't want to know ...then again I could be all wet.
