I am going to change my tranny fluid (48k) I am a 85% daily driver and only haul the other 15% a 9000 lb camper. Should I stick with regular fluid or go syn? Also is there a "how to" on changing the fliud. I hate to pay the dealer $150. when I can do it my self.
Thanks,
DSR

IMO syn in always better. At 50,000 miles I would change the internal filter as well as external, which means droping the pan. (TransGo Jr.).

Would help to know what year your truck is. If 2006 LLY or LBZ or 07 Classic LBZ w/ 6spd allison, drain the fluid and swap the spin on. The internal filters are only intended to be changed during a rebuild. Sounds like you fit the non-"SEVERE" schedule in the manual so at about 50k miles is just fine. Transyd is probably the best, but is more $$.
Valvoline makes a DEXRON-VI "full synthetic" ATF fluid that is GM approved and is a great buy at NAPA, frequently on sale. If you search on this forum for DEXRON VI you will find several threads. Transyd is cheap insurance if you were doing a bunch of heavy work, but your not so either is fine IMO.

Go with a synthetic. It's cheap insurance. Lots of good options out there (Transynd, Amsoil, Mobil 1, etc.).

Just did mine yesterday... IMO, go with Transynd and change your internal filter. Simple as pie, pull the drain plug, drop the pan (12 bolts), change the internal filter and spin-on, clean everything up and re-assemble. Tq the pan bolts to 22 ft lb. With a stock pan it holds just shy of 8 qts when doing a drain and fill. If you can change your oil, you can do this.
BTW, there's a good two quarts that won't come out of the pan if you just drain it with the plug.
