As the heading suggests which one of these manufacturers produces the loudest meanest sounding diesel on the road <!--color-->?

I was sitting beside a Dodge cummins dually the other day at a light and "by George" that bad boy was loud and mean sounding...

I only wish my 2005 dmax would keep quit but it will not (all stock). I don't really need the noise, I am grown up already....wish somebody would find a solution to get rid of the drone between 1500 and 2000 rpm....I would think the inline six of the Dodge is quieter than my dmax.

if its loud you want, then a duramax isn't for you. they can all be made to be loud, but the duramax is about the quietest made right now.

If loud is what you, then Ford is what you want.

Find the Dmax and the Cummins the quiet of the three, after testing all three over the past couple months.

Briano,
thats exactly the reason why I bought the dmax - but now I feel betrayed! My 2005 is not quiet at all, louder than the 2004 Dodge I test drove and also louder than the 2004 LB7 and 2004 LLY I test drove. Mine is even louder than mine ancient age 150+K miles Landcruiser I had at certain speeds.....

After sitting in camp grounds and listening to all of those loud diesels, I have come to the conclusion that they are as follows: listed loudest to quitest.
Cummins, P'stroke, Duramax. I can hear a cunnins stary up a half mile away, and my hearing is shot to h$%%

It must of been an older Cummins. The 2004.5s and 2005s are much quieter than any other diesel I have come across. Now, the older ones you could hear them miles away. I know when my buddy with his old 24 valve is coming over as I can hear his truck coming down the streets.

Re-reading the first post it's got to be exhaust.

They are all loud when straight piped.

From a quality of sound, the V8 diesels lose hands down. They're raspy and fluttery compared to the inline 6.

Depends on whether you enjoy your truck sounding like a UPS delivery van.

If brown vans give you wood, go with the Dodge. ;)

And actually, the LLY's aren't that loud when straight piped.

Only when I know he's got some goodies for me!

The decibal reading for the new Dodges, Ford 6.0L, and Duramax's are very close. However, the older Dodges and Ford 7.3L - too loud for me.

If its exhaust my LB7 truck will set off car alarms, "incite riots"(according to the local police) and my friends can hear me coming from over a mile away if I'm on it. I also ran a stang(beat him bad too BTW) and he made the comment afterwards how he shifts by sound of his car......he looked down and was bouncing off the limiter becasue he couldnt hear a thing):h Sound is subjective. I dont like how the cummins sounds, some do. I have a big programer and no muffler with a 4"-5" exhaust

Engine noise.......go take a test drive and see for yourself.

the loudest diesel in a pickup I have ever heard was the 86-87 ford 6.9L. those things hammered like you wouldn't believe. also a horrible engine, I've heard.thats why they were replaced by the 7.3L after only 2 years I guess. As for more recent trucks,I find the duramax is probably the quietest i've seen.believe me, after driving a ford 7.3 for almost 9 years, it's rather nice to ride in something that you dont have to shout over the engine!

My Dmax straight piped (LB7) sounded pretty good but at light throttle I got comments like.. "That thing running right?"

Just read a test in a Motortrend a while back and the DMax was the loudest of the three. They tested at idle cruising speeds etc. They were all very close only a decible or two difference across the board, so for now the 05's are all pretty quiet.

It was also the slowest.
