: how long does your LB7 take to start?
foreman00081 04-18-2008, 11:41 AM just wondering how long everyones LB7's take to start. when cold mine takes maybe 1-2 seconds of cranking to fire up and about half that time when its warmed up. its also pretty loud when it cranks. ive never thought anything of it cause it always starts up just fine and i dont have any signs of bad injectors yet but they are original still as far as i know and i drove an LBZ last night and i was pretty surprised at how fast and quietly it started up. it was already warm but it seemed like as soon as i turned the key to start it fired up almost immediatly and it was so quiet when it cranked. so i was just wondering if other LB7's were the same as mine or if maybe ive got something going on.
sptbkfn01 04-18-2008, 11:53 AM Mine does the same thing. I have only owned it for about 2 months and 4,000 miles, but I noticed the same thing you are describing.
01GMCd 04-18-2008, 12:04 PM :exactly:same here. Had it for about a year.
Sounds normal for a lb7, they always had a BIT of a crank to them, combine that with a bit of age as compared to a newer lbz with less wear on its componets and you may have a little longer crank...
sptbkfn01 04-18-2008, 12:14 PM To me, I didn't find it anything out of the ordinary I guess since I was a Dodge guy until I bought this truck. Every Cummins I was around took a second or two to fire off.
jcool 04-18-2008, 12:15 PM mine starts right up... only noise is the fan and exhaust... even in sub30 temps.
sparky1562 04-18-2008, 12:58 PM 2-3 is normal (did you time it?). 4-5 or longer and it could be a sign of injectors going. I timed mine to up to 6 seconds before the injectors were replaced. The 2-3 seconds after replacement sounded really fast to me! :D
foreman00081 04-18-2008, 01:37 PM thanks guys! sounds like its about normal, i havent timed it but i really dont think its any more than 2 seconds, maybe 3 when its really cold and when its already warmed up its probably only a second. with my new ATS tuner i can finally check balance rates so ill have to start keeping an eye on them.
sikk50 04-18-2008, 01:40 PM About 2 seconds for mine. But if I'm up at Mammoth in the super cold, it takes a little longer
srode 04-18-2008, 02:00 PM About a second here - 3 seems a bit long
richard cheese 04-18-2008, 02:01 PM 1-2 seconds
Cougar GT-E 04-18-2008, 04:44 PM 1-2 seconds.
I always let the glow plug light go out. In real cold temps (0F or less), I cycle the key to run the glows longer.

radvans 04-18-2008, 04:51 PM Batteries made a difference in mine.
Once I switched to the optimas from stock it was night and day. Fires right up after 3 yrs of use on the optimas.
If its cold it can take 2-3 seconds. I will normally cycle the key twice when in the teens or below.
Hammer 4 04-18-2008, 06:30 PM 1-2 seconds.
I always let the glow plug light go out.

Same here..:D
HEAVYdutyDMAX 04-18-2008, 06:49 PM After my batteries took i shit, i replaced them with some big interstate batteries and now its about 1-3 seconds. Every now and then, its less than 1second though, like super fast...Any one have that happen?
foreman00081 04-18-2008, 06:53 PM ya, sometimes mine will fire up super fast like that, usually when ive been driving it and shut it down for a short time then start back up again. and my batteries are good btw, replaced both of them last august
whitetrash21 04-18-2008, 07:17 PM Same here..:D
x13....
kasl33 04-18-2008, 07:36 PM 2-3 is normal (did you time it?). 4-5 or longer and it could be a sign of injectors going. I timed mine to up to 6 seconds before the injectors were replaced. The 2-3 seconds after replacement sounded really fast to me! :D
Sounds like a woman in labor.
Sparky8370 04-18-2008, 09:49 PM Mine fires right up. I think 2 seconds borders on long, and 3 def is. I do have two brand new 850cc amp batteries and I always let the plugs cycle, 2-3 times in the winter.
dmaxsnoxer 04-19-2008, 04:14 AM Sounds like a woman in labor.
I wouldnt know anything about that! Cross my fingers! Heh.
boatman24 04-19-2008, 04:29 AM Mine cranks about 2-3 seconds also.
diesel freak 123 04-19-2008, 06:33 AM 1 second here cold ,maby less when warm.
vrod255 04-19-2008, 08:22 AM pops right off.
nickLB7 04-26-2008, 03:33 PM couple seconds on my lb7 always, i wouldnt worry about it
RonJT 04-26-2008, 03:42 PM 2004 LB7 cranks right up with even waiting for glow plugs in Socal mornings. I have a lift pump. A fraction of second longer warm.
The lift pump shortening the crank time on my truck. Used to be about 2 secs.
joelnmich 04-26-2008, 04:32 PM Mine's about 2secs or so as well....unless it's below zero then it could be 3 or so.
nmband13 04-26-2008, 07:05 PM about 1-2 seconds, my remote starter is set at 1 second(cranking time) and it fires right up without any problem.
HotRodSS 04-26-2008, 07:19 PM Mine is probably about 1 second or so, but sometimes I still "short key" it when it is warmed up and I think I am driving one of my gassers.(I usually just barely hit the key on them and they fire off)
Heartbeat Hauler 04-26-2008, 07:26 PM Mine takes 1-2 seconds with cold temps, almost immediate when warm. If I use the block heater it's like summer time. When it's cold using the block heater, and when it's not quite cold enough to use it, I always cylce the glow plugs twice (light goes off, turn ignition off and repeat) it starts right up.
