: dmax first fuel fill???
L98 DRIVER 02-07-2005, 11:41 PM just did my first fillup on my new 01 with 40000 on it. I drive about 10 miles to work everyday mostly highway. 257 miles on 31 gal. I think my race car can do that
what the heck is going on here :help:
kartdude17 02-07-2005, 11:45 PM wow, on my truck (shortbed with 26 gal tank) i can get about 375 miles on it.
Reineke 02-07-2005, 11:46 PM What are the specs on your truck? Is your L98 in a Camaro/Firebird or Corvette?
pt536 02-08-2005, 12:38 AM Worst I ever got was 278 miles on 28 gallons, towing 35 foot three horse trailer with living quarters over mountain passes at 70 mph. Best 461 miles on 17 gallons not towing, highway city combined. This was before I put on the juice with attitude. Should improve now.
NCMIC 02-08-2005, 06:23 AM do you have the records of the servicing?
if not, change the fuel filter for one.
then add some fuel additive, whether it is stanadyne or primrose.
see after another tankfull what you are sitting at.
Black Dog 02-08-2005, 06:57 AM Are you sure it was full to start with? I can drive a long way before the gauge starts to move off "F".
gearhead 02-08-2005, 08:00 AM wow that sucks. I get about 500 to 600 highway with no towing.
ob_1jr 02-08-2005, 10:29 AM That does suck....where are you located? It could be because of the winter fuel. I am here in alaska and so far this winter I have been filling up every 120-170 miles. Although I do have the truck idle for awhile when the temps are cold. I have a short bed and try to fill up when I have about half a tank left. On average I usually put 16-17 gallons in. Now in the summer time I can easily get 400 miles on a tank by driving the same short trips. On the highway I can get 500+ miles a tank. I agree with the other guys, change your fuel filter and run some additive.
gsxr1216 02-08-2005, 12:32 PM yeah, mine goes about 60 miles before it even comes off the full mark after a fill up, i get 368ish on a tank (shortbed, small tank). i tell you the 2nd half of the tank goes in about 100 miles...
Frank Blum 02-08-2005, 02:34 PM If you don't have six gallons in the crank case, are not blowing a lot of black smoke when you push down on the go peddle I would agree that you didn't start with a full tank. And for you guys that run on the bottom of the tank, one by one you will lean a lesson the hard way. Later! Frank
LB7UP 02-08-2005, 03:16 PM i filled mine up 26 gal tank, and am looking at 275 city adn some highway. had my foot in in some, but i expected it to be betteer.. get the same as my 1500 5.3 on 37's . it has been regeared , bu8t still i expected it to be way betterthan that... do you guys just putt around ? i dont get it. 03 lb7 stock.. no mods.
gsxr1216 02-08-2005, 06:22 PM well mines got juice, and i am heavy on the peddle, but still average 16mpg mixed city/highway
DavesDmax 02-08-2005, 06:31 PM If you just do mostly city driving, don't expect much more than 15-16 mpg.
Add on the loss due to winter blend and cold engine temps and you can be around 13-14mpg.
A diesel's effeciency increases with warm temps, an engine at running temp, staying low in the power band (less than 2000 rpms), and not romping on it light to light.
Nothing is free.
I'm happy to get 16.5-17 mpg in the winter on a tank and I baby mine and run alot more at highway speeds than in town driving.
jbrink01 02-08-2005, 06:34 PM Left St. Louis with a tank full this AM. Filled up on the Iowa border (280 Miles). Took on 15 gallons of Amoco Premier @ $1.99. That's about normal for me. Usually 18 mpg highway (02 with 65K miles). Jeff
acehi 02-09-2005, 02:05 AM Filled up 2 weeks ago in Salt Lake City, Drove to San Francisco (about 720 mile trip), now have 900 miles on tank and still sitting at 1/4 tank. Gotta love that 75 gallon supertank... I think I was at 300 miles when it was just coming off of the full mark.. :)
Jeff
marcdeluca 02-09-2005, 09:51 AM Frank Blum, why don't you want to run the tank low? If it is because of picking up stuff on the bottom, I would want the stuff pulled out and put in the filter, where I can deal with it. I don't want junk accumulating in my tank.
L98 DRIVER 02-09-2005, 07:54 PM thanks for the info guys
I just gazzed it up again looks like about 15 mpg so things are looken up:cool:
p.s. the race car is a 91 L98 corvette
Frank Blum 02-09-2005, 08:18 PM Reason one is it sucks to run out. I have made it a point to always run on the top half. I have helped two people bleed their Duramaxs to get going. Neither had a clue how to do it. The fuel makes more heat every time it is compressed and returned to the tank. Our fuel system is a hydraulic system. If not mistaken this puts the fuel closer to the vapor point. If I do have a lot of dirt/water in the bottom I don't want it going anywhere in a concentrated form. Later! Frank
acehi 02-09-2005, 11:15 PM The temp of the fuel is the only thing I would worry about. Dirt or anything else, well you won't have to worry about it going in in any concentrated form because your pickup is at the bottom of the tank anyway. That would be the first thing to get picked up. But for me, the 75 gallon tank disperses the fuel quite well and it much easier to cool down while in the tank.
Just my .02 cents.
Jeff
LARSONEM 02-10-2005, 12:07 PM One thing I've heard about running on the top half of the tank is that the fuel in the tank acts as a coolant for the electric fuel pump inside the tank. But do our diesels have an electric fuel pump inside the tank? I know our gasoline trucks do.

Doesn't the fuel chiller take care of the returned fuel?
marcdeluca 02-10-2005, 03:15 PM There is a fuel cooler just in front of the tank, and there is no pump in the tank. It is drawn out by the injector pump.
dieseldan723 02-11-2005, 01:46 AM Frank, what are you talking about? I am a new diesel owner and haven't been getting diesel until the light comes on?? HELP.
acehi 02-11-2005, 09:48 AM You call that a fuel cooler? But it is so SMALL. :) And it is not even in the direct path of any airflow. Plus it is directly behind the motor and the heat from the motor would keep it warmer then the outside air. I cannot see how it would even work. It might work better as a boat anchor.
Jeff
marcdeluca 02-11-2005, 10:00 AM On my truck, if it truly is a 34 gal tank, when the light comes on I can only get about 28 into it. I did put 32 in it once, but I was getting nervous.
marcdeluca 02-11-2005, 10:01 AM Maybe it's a fuel heater!
marky 02-11-2005, 11:42 AM Frank, what are you talking about? I am a new diesel owner and haven't been getting diesel until the light comes on?? HELP.
In college I drove a car without a fuel gauge. Based everything on miles driven, environmental conditions, traffic, etc. Often played a game to see how far I could go. Ran out of gas a couple of times.
You are putting your trust in the low fuel indicator. Thats okay, if it turns out to be reliable and consistant and you are within range of a fuel stop when it comes on. I usually refuel at 1/4 tank.
Do you know what you need to do if you do run out of fuel? I haven't run out of fuel (yet), but I ran through the drill shortly after I bought the truck. I found I don't like messing with screw drivers, especially in low light, so I put a nut driver in the glove box that fits the bleed screw on the fuel filter head.
