: Custom billet Duramax badges

I have spoken to Steve at billetbadges.com about making custom badges for our trucks. One of my biggest gripes, and I have heard others who feel the same way, is that our current badges are too small. He does some really nice stuff for the Fords and is willing to make something for us. Originally I had spoken to him about making a combined Duramax/Allison badge but the more I think about I would like them as seperate badges. If there is enough response and we can agree on a layout I will let him know and he can get started. Check out his site and see if anything there sparks your interest. He did mentiona concern about our doors being more rounded than the Fords so the height would be limited to around 1.5" but could be as long as 18".

We can do them without color and those of us that want color can do it ourselves. Steve said he was looking to get into other brands than Ford so maybe he would make up more than one design, even"Badass Diesel". I actully like that idea a lot!

maynard9089

If you go to Steves site look for the "RSR Silver Bullet" badges. I really like the curve to the face. I would like to see something similar in a 1.5"x6" size. Preferably with DURAMAX dominationg the top half and 6.6L TURBO DIESEL in smaller letters below. Similar to the bottom picture that I previously show.

Count me in. I just love the larger Ford emblems and just disappointed that GM's factory emblem is so small. Why put such a small emblem on a big truck? You'd think for the extra $6k engine/tranny option that they could have made the emblem twice as big!!!

All 3 designs are great. Hard to visualize which would look best with no color. But, I think my first choice would be the 3rd image.

Good design job!

This would be a very nice idea to have something signifying a certain gourp of Duramax owners.
I am not one for emblems on my vehicles because it is a pain in the arse to detail the truck.

If you come up with something very original and good looking I might be interested and replace the duramax emblem on the side.

Maynard9089, That looks really good, it makes sense to have one on the tail gate I think. Thanks

Turbo Boy
02-15-2005, 11:04 PM
Looks nice. However, it's really not that much bigger than the factory emblem. The factory emblem is 1" x 6". With this one being 1.5" x 6", doesn't seem that much bigger. Seems to me that I'd like it to be around 2" x 7" for that in your face look.

Let me know when you guys decide to buy and have it installed on how it looks. $110 isn't chump change for a bit bigger emblem. Just my opinion, though. Anyone know the size of the Ford's Powerstroke emblem?

Frank.

What do you guys think about making the letters all the way through and the rest polished. That would make the letters the same color as the truck.

Yes 2 inches would be much better, and polished all the way. That way you can have them painted what color you want.

I put the OEM badge over the large SIERRA lined up with the left edge. Im not sure where the Cheby guys are putting them. It looks factory on mine though.
On my Cheby Tailgate I lined up the OEM badge the same as the drivers door. And YUP, it looks factory.

maynard9089
02-16-2005, 03:26 PM
Steve was concerned about going more than 1.5" high because of the curve to the door skin. The badges are flat and he thought they might not look right. I'll cut up some aluminum stock at work Thursday and see how it looks.

maynard9089
02-16-2005, 06:08 PM
OK- I've given the size more thought and think that 1.5" x 6" is actually a good size with the design. The biggest thing with this new badge is that the DURAMAX is nearly 6" long itself. DURAMAX alone is about the same size as our current badges. Too big and you run the risk of it getting gawdy. I really don't think taller would look good. I am open to longer. Say 1.5"x8 or so. Well?

That one with the US flag would be hell to wash and wax around. I like the original 1.5" x 6" w/ Duramax painted red but with a red that is not as bright. I like the rolled edges. A must for maintaining around the badge.

maynard9089

Here's the deal- Steve at www.billetbadges.com is interested in branching out to other brands than F*** (the other 4 letter F word). I approached him about creating a more noticable Duramax badge for our trucks. Here is what he has offered for us.
You can order your badge in either a flat stock or a domed face stock (please refer to the RSR Silver Bullet badge in the gallery section of his website) He has just order the tool to do the domed faces so it will be roughly six weeks until they will be available. Here is some of the info:

I just ordered a tool to extrude the aluminum with the domed face. The aluminum bar will be 1.5" high and .25" thick in the center and .125" thick on the top and bottom.
The tool will be ready in 4 weeks and the aluminum will be extruded a
week after that. If the guys are willing to wait that long for parts, I
can have these parts as part of the group buy.

Here is the deal I can offer to The Diesel Place members. Polished
unpainted "Turbo Diesel" badges for $25 each. Polished badges with
painted letters for $32 each. If they want to add their own custom
phrase to the second line, it will be $5 extra per badge and limited to
12 characters including spaces. They can be made out of flat stock
material if they want them now or domed material if they can wait 6
weeks for the material to come in.
I can accept
checks, money orders or Pay Pal if they are willing to pay the $5 Pay
Pal service fee. They can fill out a order form from my site and submit
it to me and select the payment method they prefer. I will give them
the group buy price. So they can order anytime they want until, let's
say April 30th (My Birthday). The badges will be made out of flat stock
material unless they make a note that they want the domed material. If
they want the domed material, there parts will be run as soon as the
material arrives and is cut and polished.
Any questions can be directed to him at maxrsmart@cox.net

Absolutely! Color is an option and I think it only adds $5 per badge. I plan to order mine just polished and have a guy at work who does pinstriping put the color on it. MaXRSmart
03-01-2005, 11:43 PM
The Allison Transmission looks good as artwork, but it would be very difficult to machine it. We would have to use a very small engraving tool and it would not be very deep. Serif fonts or fonts with sharp points don't work for machining. You need to remember that a round mill bit needs to cut it out, so all the sharp inside corners will have a radius. So if there are fonts that you want to try, look at the bolder fonts. Plus bolder fonts are easier to read.

Keep the ideas flowing. How about "Oil Burner", "SS Turbo Diesel", etc.

I changed the order form last weekend. It will be the 1.5" X 6" badge (Duramax) badge. If you want them right away, they will be made out of flat stock. If you want the domed badge, tell me that you want the "Domed" badges in the "Additional Information Or Comments" section. Does that mean that you are open to making anything, even if it doesn't say Duramax in the top row (like the 2500HD emblem)? If so, I assume it would be from the same material as the Dmax badges to keep it simple? Can we just order it on your site that way?
Thanks

Instead of 2 sided tape, why not have 3 earth magnets inbeded in the back side, then the curves of the truck will have no effect whatsoever. And for the ones that said no color, I hope you meant no color other then black. Because if they are a polished aluminum with no other color, that would be a total waste of money, you couldn't read the words, if you were sitting still and 3 feet away if that were the case.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif

ThanksYes, it can say whatever you want as long as it fits. There will be a small programming fee for the custom sets. Here are the details again.

Magnets would not stick to the aluminum very well. Plus the cost of the magnets cost more than the adhesive and they will not hold as well.

When I say no color, it means no paint. That is for the people that want to save money and paint them on their own or go for the acetone look. Eventhough they are unpainted, they have a machined finish that adds contrast. Most of the people that order unpainted badges plan on painting them on their own and have them some custom color.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

In the early posts, the second line was '6.6L Turbo Diesel'. As the thread evolved, the 'L' was removed. I know it's not a big deal, and most people will know what 6.6 means, but I preferred mine with the 'L'. maxrsmart asked me to post the question for others to comment on so he could try to keep it to one design. Please feel free to post your comments on your preference. Thanks!

So you would want to spend the machine time and money to pocket out the back of the badge to epoxy magnets to the inside of the badge. Then spend the extra money for magnets that would not be as strong as the adhesive. Would you really want a magnet that could be pulled off your truck easily? Your messing with me, right? :D

Are these badges as rounded as the new powerjoke 6.0 badges? I don't really care for the roundness of the 6.slow badges and would like a polished one in the same sort of shape as the stock one other than size. Does anybody have pics of them mounted up where the stock ones are?

I can even do the reverse and have the whole badge painted in black powdercooat and machine out the letters. If that is not different enough, you can change it to any design you can dream up. Come up with your own design and I will machine it out. Let me know your ideas.

I haven't done it on the Duramax badge yet, but it should fit. I usually don't draw it up until someone orders it. I have so many renderings that I need to do right now, that I don't have much time to just do one for the fun of it. If I get a break, I will try and draw it up.

My painted badges with machined text are powdercoated. When I paint the text, I paint them with a baked enamel. As far as I know, you should be able to powdercoat stainless as long as you sandblast and rough up the surface a bit. I haven't personally powdercoated any stainless.

Now that I look at the Allison badge and how it shines I think polished aluminum would be better for my idea. Can any powdercoating place do small inverted lettering like that? I was going to have my friend make me something and have him write something into the metal and send it to powdercoating. The more I look how good everything is that you do I could have you do it. Whenever he wants something powdercoated they just do it with the color that they where using and it is a dull black.

I am offering a $37 special on the Allison badge. They are not on my site yet, but just select th 1.5" X 6" badge and for the text on the badge write Allison Transmission. Please mention this site so I know your part of the group buy.

Just got my domed Duramax badges last week. Just awesome quality. They look really good. For those of you that are sitting on the fence, I say just do it. And for those of you balking at the $35 cost, come on....you spent $6K for the diesel option. These badges are definitely made with good quality. From the time I sent the check to when I received the badges in the mail, it was about 3 weeks. Steve was very responsive to me. I'd definitely recommend his product!

Frank.

I like the first one, of the three. Are you going to make anything for the Allison transmission?

Thanks

I'm going to do it for sure, but I'm waiting to find out which vanity plates the DMV approves for me because I want the Custom lettering below the Duramax to match the plates.

Harrington,
I have already made the Allison Transmission badge. Go back a couple of pages an you will see a picture. Or go the the "Allison Transmission" section and look for the "Allison Transmission Billet Badge" thread.

How about an "Allison by Suncoast" badge or an "Allison by Mike L."? In other words can we adjust the 2nd line of the Allison badges like you can the Duramax badges?

I'm sure that Steve would be more than happy to accomadate you on the second line. Actually you can change anything you want about the badge including size and shape.
