: Looking to buy a duramax
Kerpit 04-15-2008, 11:40 AM I saw this one at a dealer nearby my house, i don't know much about duramax diesels but i am a certified automotive mechanic with 7 years experience and i am currently a heavy equipment mechanic for a caterpillar dealership with a diesel engine degree so i can pickup on the basics but i have no idea about the lb7,lly, and lbz differences. I have heard that the lly is what i want for my price range of $30,000 max. I have access to mitchell on demand and i was scanning through the tsb's a bit so i could learn what to look out for when purchasing. If you could look at this link and let me know what i should look for i would greatly appreciate it. I have lost touch on the automotive world since moving into heavy equipment, it's hard enough keeping up in that industry. I will be trading in a 02 2500 hd with a 6.0.
Thank you

westx4 04-15-2008, 12:44 PM The pictures look good. I think that's a great price. Run the VIN to make sure nobody has voided the warranty with aftermarket stuff. I'd buy it!
westx4 04-15-2008, 12:49 PM BTW...The carfax history report is clean. Looks good.
btfarm 04-15-2008, 01:26 PM Welcome to the DP! You'll run across some good folks here. As said before, run a VIN check to see what has been done. If it's an LLY, the only 2 things to really be careful of is if it's been an overheater (some were, mine wasn't) and #2/#7 injector connector/wiring chafe through (easily fixed). Also check for pump rub in the transfer case area. All of those things have been addressed here numerous times. Looks like a good price for the truck.
Kerpit 04-15-2008, 01:27 PM sweet...can't wait til saturday to go home and test drive it. I'm stuck in peoria at caterpillar school...thank you so much!
JC1843 04-15-2008, 01:31 PM Looks pretty clean and priced right-- May want to make a lower offer as trucks are not selling to well right because of the fuel prices. I paid $21,000 for mine in Jan this year. :)
Kerpit 04-17-2008, 03:51 PM that truck was sold...go figure. I'm having a hard time finding a gmc crew cab around chicago land for a good price. I found this one 50 miles away near milwaukee. Seems kinda high price but that seems like the norm around here??? Please let me know what you guys think of this one.
Thank you

Turbobruce 04-17-2008, 03:58 PM I would look for a LBZ. More power with an improved cooling system and it takes a little longer to overheat if you tow in certain conditions.
blkgmcHD 04-17-2008, 04:51 PM were do you live in Illinois maybe some of us in Il. can help and keep are eye s open. did you check out the big dealer in joliet.
welcome to the DP
turtle 04-17-2008, 05:17 PM Hey Brian, I work for Cat in Peoria! From my experience looking for a CC 4x4 SB truck, finding an LBZ for $30k max was not doable. JMHO. I bought a 2005 LLY a few weeks ago and love it. Good luck with your search.
Kerpit 04-17-2008, 05:43 PM I'm from geneva which is like an hour north of joliet so i'm not familiar with a dealer from there. I have basically searched the net...everything is so widespread that it will take forever to just drive to every dealer not even knowing if they will have a used one. I don't tow anything extremely heavy, i just need a truck and my 02 hd 6.0 sucks gas horribly and it's earier for me to work on being i'm a diesel mechanic for Cat.
Shane01638 04-17-2008, 06:55 PM It looks like they haven't depreciated that much then. I paid $36,000 for mine brand new in 2005. Mine has every option except dual alternators, and snow plow prep. Wow the 2500's are going for only $9,000 less than my 3500 3 years later? You might want to see about a new one. You just gotta talk that salesman down to the ground. Make him put in a free spray in bedliner and some dvd screens in the headrest, or whatever suits your fancy.
KevinsDMAX 04-17-2008, 10:36 PM I agree with Shane, you could get a brand new one with maybe not as many options for less or around the same money...

btfarm 04-18-2008, 08:27 AM Joliet dealer he's talking about is Bill Jacobs. You might check Bill Walsh in Ottawa or Vaessen in Sublett. Far from Geneva I know but might be worth a look at their websites and if you have a good relationship with your local dealer it might be ok. Stay away from Gjovic in Sandwich... CROOKS!
wingnut96 04-18-2008, 09:44 PM Trying to figure what mine is worth after adding all the goodies. I just don't need my girl anymore since I'll be overseas for awhile and all she is doing is depreciating and using up the extended warrantee. Great truck and she has done her job very well. My first new truck so it's a very hard thing to let her go. Still debating I guess. Check my garage for more pics. Thanks.
Kerpit 04-19-2008, 11:34 AM Thanks for all the replies everyone, well appreciated. I found an 06 lbz with 16,000 miles, white, but no leather...do u guys think that i should really hold out for leather? I have an 02 hd 6.0 with the exact cloth interior as this one...but just thought i would like that middle console that leather has...hard decisions in life!
blkgmcHD 04-19-2008, 11:37 AM get leather but if the price is right you may want to jump on that z06

X2 on Vaessen's! Great People our family has bought lots of trucks through them. Neil and Nick are great to deal with. No BS like the city dealers.

Cloth or leather, that's a choice you'll have to decide on, but the LBZ is the D-Max to have. The LBZ has improvements over the previous versions (better cooling, 6-speed Allison, more power, etc) without the undesirable BS that the LMM's have (particulate filter, regen exhaust). Just my 2 cents. YMMV. If you do decide to go after an LBZ, be sure to verify it in the VIN.
