im looking at dropping in a new turbo on the lbz. I do tow frequently back and forth from the dunes. Which one do you guys think will be the best for manageable egt's and not blowin any gaskets?

Is other work required when switching turbos? If so, what?

ive had a hell of a time trying to get that turbo shield off!

just make sure you get all your connections hooked back up properly. The only gaskets that come with the kit are the oil drain line gaskets. I would suggest going to the dealer and getting new up pipe / manifold gaskets. Air tools make the switch a lot easier too :D

my buddy and i were just talking about this last night. we both felt the 70 was the only way to go

I can supply the manifold gaskets too I guess.... I've never had to replace them though in my installs..

Perhaps EFI Live; if for nothing else, to recalibrate the ECM for increased MAP, MAF, etc?

Yeah, you need EFILive in order to make the swap...I was thinking more what needs to be done to the engine hardware wise.

I have heard of people running PPE tuning with the modified VVT's with no issues at all.

My mistake... I didn't realize PPE had a solution for a non stock turbo to be run. :o: Good info thanks.

To my original question though... do hardware mods to the motor need to be done to run one of the aftermarket turbos?

Brayden

Actually you can run "Pre-canned" tuning with no issues. It's just better to have EFILive so you can really dial it in.

Recommended equipment for a Cheetah is a Diamond Eye Downpipe and BD Manifold. Both are available from us.

Without EFILive to adjust the tables or turn off the DTC's, how do you deal with turbo vane position tables and errors with one of these turbos?

There are no errors, these are modded stock chargers and retain the variable vanes. ECM doesn't know anything has changed.:D

You will know something has changed though ;)

If you retain the stock tables the boost climbs very quickly to 32-35psi and then stops.. Unless you raise the desired boost tables you won't make any more boost. This is the same with any other charger though.

Ahhhhhh. Didn't realize these were still VVT's (or VNT's) Very cool. Thanks for the education. :thumb:

what is the most boost you can get out of a 70?

I'm liking the way 38 - 40 psi feels

Running those kind of PSI numbers, how are you guys keeping your boots from blowing off? I have a SD manifold and I keep blowing it off only running 33PSI max. Please tell me the secret! I've taken everything apart, cleaned all contact points with brake cleaner, and used RTV sealant/adheasive but it blew off again around 26PSI last time. I've switched from the stock clamps to just old fashioned hose clamps because I stripped one of the stock bolts by overtightening it. (either that or just the number of times I've had to take it off and put it back on when the boot blows off.) I think the rubber peices may be shot now because they aren't even tight when I slide them back on... I think they are all streched out and one piece on the inside has a chunk missing... I've heard to put them on with hairspray but I'm waiting for SD (michael I think) to send me a couple new boot pieces that aren't all streched out to try that with. So is that the secret to gettting these boots to stay on or is there another way?

Never had a problem with keeping the boots on and I haven't done anything other than normal tightning of the clamps.

mine have been good to over 32 psi............ ;) Never had one pop off.

If you overtighten them and crush the aluminum tubing you're pretty much screwed until you replace the CAC pipe.

Like Larry said.. 38-42 feels really nice :D

Finally I realized as I was tightening the clamp it would work its way over the lip of the tube a little, so I was clamping it kind of on top of the swollen part. After I figured out what was happening I tightened the clamp while holding it in place with a screw driver making sure the whole clamp was where it was supose to be. Ive hit 40 psi a few times since and so far so good. I think the problem is the rubber pieces are'nt quite long enough.

Crank that baby down! :D I also had to replace a boot once when I think I cranked it down TOO tight and it expanded and just created a nice slit next to the clamp once.

Ive seen up to 35 PSI on my truck equipped with SD manifold and no issues yet. My LLY seemed to blow them off though.... that was unsettling LOL.

Are there any benifits to upgrading to a Banks or Spearco Intercooler with these turbos?

Brayden
04-22-2008, 08:50 AM
I hear the PPE intercooler with spearco core is better than any of them because it has internal bracing to allow you to run higher boost. I haven't run one first hand but I did hear that.

Are any of your Cheetah customers running aftermarket intercoolers?

I've been running my stock VVT at 45psi ( with the help of MPI generation 1 compound set up) Now I have the first version of LLY twins, that are not wastegated, and my boost has be limited by the size of the stock VVT, on the Gen I LB7 twins ran alot more boost. The Gen II LLY twin have a wastegate to turn up the boost.

Now the Cheetah should allow my big turbo to make more boost, might be the best way to upgrade the old twins:rolleyes:

Brayden, how are the LB7 Cheetah prototypes doing in testing? Any idea when they might be available, and how much the upgrade might cost?
