Just bought a 2005 Rockwood pop up camper this wekeend. I was wondering if I need to install trailer brakes and or exhaust brake. I have a Duramax/Allison auto setup. Any help would be appreciated? And any brands would also be appreciated if needed? Thanks.

Does the trailer have brakes on the axles already? If not, I wouldn't worry about it. If it has brakes you might as well add the brake controller. Exhaust brake is probably not necessary. How much does it weigh?

Trailer has electric brakes. Weighs roughly 5,000 pounds dry.

If it has electric brakes definitely get a brake controller. I wouldn't bother with the exhaust brakes personally.

Also, and this might depend on your location, and I sure the "Towers" might have more info, but I think any trailer over 1500 lbs has to have it's own brakes. And I also think that if the brakes are in place, that they must be hooked up and in proper working order. I know that's true here in MA.
Plus at 5000 lbs dry you are pretty close to the weight of your truck. Would you want to stop 2 trucks in a panic with just 1 set truck brakes?

2001 lbs plus must have brakes and they must be hooked up. For that light of a trailer I would go with a Prodigy even though I run with a BrakeSmart. It will give you peace of mind.
