: how do the modded allisons shift?
95geo 02-07-2005, 10:32 AM im considering a suncoast level III or an ats with copilot, do they disable the learning on the allison or is it masked or toned down somehow? are the shifts firm all the time? does it take a few runs to hold more hp than its used to... say if you drove to the track conservatively then loaded a high hp tune will it slip or handle it
will the suncoast be crisp all the time or will i need the copilot to dial it in if im going to bump up the hp?
IBDMAX'IN 02-07-2005, 01:50 PM Well you should always try to give you tranny at least a couple of WOT runs before you go all nuts on the track, but you should know that you can't go through a relearn process with a truck running nitrous and as long as your tranny is strong you shouldn't have too many problems. I just did the full ATS upgrade on my truck and it kicked a** from the get go. Although the shifts were a little wacky.
dmaxalliTech 02-07-2005, 02:27 PM 95, a trip to Grand Rapids and you can go for a ride in a SC IV and a full ATS. Both drive well when settled down and flat rock when you need too
95geo 02-07-2005, 02:40 PM hmmmm, its a few hour drive but i might take you up on that.....
IBDMAX'IN 02-07-2005, 05:58 PM I would definently take him up on that!!!! Eric flat rocks :rockit:
Jeffwich 02-07-2005, 06:08 PM Im thinking the same thing 95geo... Road trip together
bigblackdmax 02-07-2005, 06:14 PM I know that with my truck if I am towing and the copilot is on the torque converter hits so hard in second you about get whiplash. Its freakin awesome.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/rockon.gif
95geo 02-07-2005, 08:31 PM eric/jeff let me know what works.... id love to check the product out first hand
Carbon04 02-07-2005, 08:55 PM jeffwich, last saturday we had 2 SC lv5, 1 full ATS, and 1 "hybrid" in the lower part of wisconsin. I can rearrange a side by side by side comparison if you like. PM me.
Mike L. 02-07-2005, 10:35 PM "hybrid"? I wonder if it's the same stupid stuff in my Ally?
ratlover 02-08-2005, 09:23 AM One thing I noticed......better have like programing when doing side by side comparisons. Diferent programing can shift differnt.
I personaly dont like something that shifts like a damn B&M shift kit. Nice and firm in every gear and I DONT want the damn thing shifting at 3500 EVER.
With the hot juice and all that my stage 3 pretty much shifter like stock, maybe a hair firmer.
95geo 02-08-2005, 10:46 AM i guess thats what im trying to get at, i had a transgo shift kit in my s-10 and there was a little bump to every shift (it was quick and crisp all the time) but withthe allisons adaptive shifting will it compensate for the firm shift of the shift kit or will the "stock" baseline shift be more firm even though the allison knows it too hard?
Bronco 02-08-2005, 11:50 AM Hey that is a great question. How do they shift? There are a few reliable options out there for upgraded transmissions. They all can hold big power and are priced comparably. Now you get down to the nitty gritty. Shift quality, drivabillaty.
I have been in a few Fords with c4's and c'6 transmissions with shift kits only. They shifted harshly every shift. Great when doing a full 1/4 mile pass, but when just driving around town............ COME ON.
So now I am approaching the milage when a tranny upgrade is getting closer to first on my list and shift consitancy, shift quality and overall drivabillaty is my top priority.
Carbon04 02-08-2005, 05:38 PM Mike I have a feeling they might be "similar".;)
Diesel Tech 02-08-2005, 09:35 PM Mike I have a feeling they might be "similar".;)
Almost but just one little or big difference depending on how you look at it. ):h
Carbon04 02-09-2005, 05:19 PM After this past weekend I would say a big difference......................not a fan of purple
95geo 02-10-2005, 12:44 PM so is this question to difficult for the techs on the board or is there more bsing to be done about some mysterous trans parts????
Mike L. 02-10-2005, 01:12 PM so is this question to difficult for the techs on the board or is there more bsing to be done about some mysterous trans parts????
Yes and No.
dmaxalliTech 02-10-2005, 01:37 PM no and yes, but not in that necasarily(sp) in that order
Got Juice? 02-10-2005, 02:20 PM Maybe.... and that is a definate!
95geo 02-10-2005, 02:23 PM thats great and all but none of you are making a sale.....
dmaxalliTech 02-10-2005, 02:27 PM 95, a trip to Grand Rapids and you can go for a ride in a SC IV and a full ATS. Both drive well when settled down and flat rock when you need tooAs posted very early in this thread.....
You can decide for yourself then
95geo 02-10-2005, 02:29 PM eric/jeff let me know what works.... id love to check the product out first hand
maybe you missed it
dmaxalliTech 02-10-2005, 02:35 PM I dunno who Jeff is, but as for shifting goes, it will depend on the box/tuner you have as much as the trans you have. My Juice shifts very well and my VA shifts kind of funky.
Looks as if your running an Edge box, so both the SC and the ATS will work well. Dependin on the level of upgrade will set price. More upgrade you have, the more likely the trans is to be 'stiffer' as your changing alot of things and getting rid of some of the factory 'cushion'. Best way to tell IMO is to ride in one with your setup. I dont know of a good way to answer the question as there is just to many variables
Got Juice? 02-10-2005, 02:55 PM thats great and all but none of you are making a sale.....That is because NOBODY wants to sell you anything!
(That comment is not meant in a mean way at all)
The reason i said that nobody wants to 'sell you' anything, is that you need to do some reading on what members have to say about their trucks transmissions and how they perform, do they like them, buyers remorse or ????
Then contact the guys who have the transmissions that you are interested in who live close to you and aske them for a test run.
In order for you to make the best decision for you, you have to decide, and nobody here can do that for you.
Just my opinion.
95geo 02-10-2005, 02:59 PM jeff is interested in a ride aswell (post #6)
i also have a predator, but i'm not done there... i dont plan on setting any records with the truck but i would like the trans to last in the 13.xx-12.9 territory and pulling my other truck with it
im going to spend around 3k on parts
95geo 02-10-2005, 03:03 PM juice, thats what i have been doing... but i havent heard any feedback on this question
Got Juice? 02-10-2005, 03:20 PM ok, i think i get it now.
but i think that getting to the 12.9 bracket on 3k is a bit unrealistic.
I would go for the best trans you can afford and a TTS Extreme or one of the hot Stacks.
Do an exhaust and tie rod sleeves and that should put you in the hunt.
My stage1 Allison was working extremely well for me, and stage2 is now in, just waiting for the Twinstall to be finished up and some miles put on it before commenting on its performance.
depending on the weight of your truck, tire size etc i really feel that you need to be in the 500 RWHP range to accomplish that.
FWIW
dmaxalliTech 02-10-2005, 03:48 PM 3k in parts and you'll be fine if your doing the work
SC IV parts will be around 2665.00 and an ATS with co-pilot will be in the 3800.00 range. Juice said it, if we as venders 'sell' you something, then if you dont like it, we would be blamed. We will give you recommendations etc, but I know I wont try and sell you one over the other. I will be more happy to arrange for you to ride/drive many trucks with about any trans you want. Even in your area likely.
Mike L. 02-10-2005, 10:33 PM 95geo
You may be looking for something that does not exist yet. I can build or supply a transmission for you that will take a lot of horsepower and last. How will it shift? Usually pretty well notwithstanding quirks. Driving someone elses truck may or may not tell you how your truck will shift even with the same program. The TCM will judge that. I have found that installing an ATS Copilot on any trans will give you predictable shifts and quicker times in the quarter mile. Will you still have quirks ( hard downshifts, double feeling shifts at times, harsh upshifts when you do not expect them) yes. We are all working on the TCM problem. As far as quality of shifts, there are no promises yet.
mike
95geo 02-11-2005, 10:38 AM mike, can you give me a rundown of what parts you would use to build a trans, whats wrong with a kit by the big companys? is there an alternative to the copilot yet?
and the copilot has the ablitiy to lock up the t/c in 2-5, is this similar to tow haul without the raised shift points?
the reason i ask is has anyone made a tcc lockup switch that is activated by a 2nd gear solenoid (im not sure what clutches get applied for what gears) and then taking a lead wire for the other gears, but leaving 1st out so when you slow down your tcc wont still be locked up if the switch is on
anyone????
ratlover 02-11-2005, 11:17 AM I believe the co pilot now has the ability to lock it up in first.
IIRC
c1 c5 1
c1 c4 2
c1 c3 3
c1 c2 4
c2 c3 5
Its all electronic......you could tell the convrter to lock up as soon as you turn the key over if you wanted. Got to either screw with the TCM(what i would like to see) or lie to the TCM(ala co pilot)
dmaxalliTech 02-11-2005, 11:26 AM conv lock up is hydraulically impossible in first gear.
ratlover 02-11-2005, 11:30 AM It is???? Not doubting but why do you say that?
dmaxalliTech 02-11-2005, 11:31 AM I've read the oil circuits, and unless I read it wrong.....
I know that the Hydromatics it is also impossible in first gear
Mike L. 02-11-2005, 11:52 AM Plug the cooler and find out. It will lock in first gear. Take Tech 2 and do hot mode test, it will lock in first gear. It is possible.
mike
ratlover 02-11-2005, 11:55 AM Plug the cooler and find out.
Advice from a guy that sells trans parts:muahaha:
a side note: Ive heard talk of the hot mode and such but never been able to find it with my snaponscammer or even with a tech2??? Were is it hiding at? functional tests or what?
Mike L. 02-11-2005, 12:13 PM 95 GEO
If your putting down big horsepower and racing or pulling you need a trans from Suncoast or ATS. DTT will be releasing their trans soon and might be another alternative after testing. I personaly am not interested in building a killer trans for you big boys; I buy those from the above companys. I am always trying new things and I do a lot of testing; some ideas are mine some from other people. I build custom transmissions using parts from above companys and some others. There are a lot of good parts out there and they will constantly improve.
mike
95geo 02-11-2005, 12:29 PM well thanks for the replys, do the solenoids require a signal from the pcm or is it just like a 5 volt constant?
Stefan K 02-11-2005, 01:00 PM Mike L your trans parts are shipping Monday.:ro)
Mike L. 02-11-2005, 05:56 PM well thanks for the replys, do the solenoids require a signal from the pcm or is it just like a 5 volt constant?
ECM
Carbon04 02-12-2005, 11:42 AM I have locked the converter in drive at 0mph in a driveway with LS1EDIT EFIlive software on a 4L60E and a 4L80E......................the engine dies instantly. It CAN be done.
