Looking at picking one of these up, anything to look for specifically? I would assume it's a decent little tractor. Starts, runs, doesn't smoke, hydraulics work well, no leaks... I think I've got all of my bases covered, just wanted to check for some opinions from you guys! :)

Hey Tom!! Just today we added (well I can't take credit, Sp33d added) a new forum JUST for tractors. It's under any other vehicles. I'm going to move this post over there but if you have anything else to add on another post please feel free to make yourself at home in there!

I sit on one everyday day, Is this the size your talking about? I run that with a 16 foot mower deck now and I also run a 5210, work for the county and we use them hard, no problems other then a starter...

The 5200 I think is 45hp NA 3cyl, its a good engine and these were good tractors. I prefer a 5500, 89 engine hp. :D

The 5200 is a good tractor. With that loader it is really good that the one your looking at is 4 wheel drive cause the five thousand series were terrible about breaking spindles on the 2 wheel drive models when they were equipped with loaders. You really want it to have the sych-shuttle transmission it works a lot better with a loader than the collar shift transmission. Also some of the early 5000 series tractors had problems with the injector pumps. Check the clutch adjustment, you have to keep loosening up the linkage over the life of the clutch or it will prematurely burn it out. Just make sure its got some play in the linkage. Good luck.

Ok, so it's got a stanadyne pump on it, and I have no idea which trans is in it. What's the best way to figure it out (by looking at it)? I'll be nitpicking at it tomorrow, need some ammo! It's a 97.

I believe the sync shuttle transmission has 2 levers. one on the left to select your range and one on the right for your 3 different speeds and reverse. someone can correct me if im wrong

I like the collar shift, you can go from forward to reverse by just moving a lever on the dash and no grinding gears. Thats what the 5500 in my garage has. One side of the seat has a lever, ABC and the other side has 1234 then F&R on the dash so you get 12 speeds.

Check the tires for big gashes and slop in the loader pins.

thats not a collar shift that is a power reverser, yes that is the best. If its a sync shuttle it will say so on the tractor.

That's as close as "lever" pics I could get today with my cameraphone. Tires up front are new, no gashes on the back ones. Seat's got some little rips. Didn't check the loader pins though. Good thought. Thanks!!

Now the kicker questions. What's a reasonable amount of hours to have on one of these. He's got all of the service records (bought it new) but dumbass me, didn't ask about hours. What should I be paying, ballpark...? Thanks, never thought I'd find help with a tractor on here!!

Thats why I wanted a tractor forum on here, there is alot of smart guys here.

I was told by the JD dealer that 2000hrs is like 100,000 miles on a car. Once your over that price drops.

When my dad bought his tractor the dealership parked it so the big gash in the tire was down so you couldnt see it.

Id say that tractor is worth about $15,000, whats he asking for it?

I was told by the JD dealer that 2000hrs is like 100,000 miles on a car.

I guess you could look at it that way but need to compare it to HD equipment like semis that run a million miles to be fair.

2000 hours is just getting broke in for most farm equipment. 2080hrs in a year is a normal 40 hr/week job. you'll see lots of older tractors w/ 10,000+ hours and still bring good money.

life's a little harder on loader tractors if they're just used for loader work.

look at front end, is everything still tight or does the steering have new parts or any play?

try this site deere 5200 (http://www.machinefinder.com/results.html?ticket=af0bd01968041caa19b9375f4e217b 51415c2749&jdeere_dealer_id=0&pageseq=359340&intRedir=1208625947.5787339) put in your zip and it'll show them close to you.

give an idea what they're bringing. one has 5600 hours and new loader and asking $17,900 and $15,000 for a 2000hr one. location means a lot on farm stuff.

I passed on it. It had 4000 hours on it and needed a bit of work on the front end, good call DMAX tim. The guy was asking 17,900 for it, which I thought was a bit much with all the hours on it. It was clean, but I'll find another one. Not in any hurry. :) Thanks guys.

bighawg mentioned adjusting the clutch linkage on a 5200 series John Deere to prevent premature clutch burn-out. Can someone help with some more info on this subject? The only linkage I have found is the one connecting to the clutch pedal, but the clutch still seems to have some pressure on it. Is there another adjustment and if so, where is it? THANKS!!

Clutch adjustment is just done with the linkage. You need some free play in it. If it is out of freeplay, then it is time for a new clutch.
