: Why no programmers for vans
DuraMaxxedOut 04-14-2008, 01:06 PM I dont own a dmax van but im just curious why most hand held programmers say they will not work on vans??
My family is also in the floring business and I would love to talk my ole man into a DMAX van if I could get it to roast the tires and dump some black smoke on the way to the job hahah would making work alot more fun.
Colorado Kid 04-14-2008, 01:58 PM Just guessing, but it's probably because:
1) The vans are rare, which makes a custom tune not likely to see return on the investment and
2) The 4L85-E is pretty well maxed out already in this application, in fact GM sees fit to de-rate the engine in this application.
ShopSpecialties 04-14-2008, 02:19 PM I am running EFILive. The reason for the engine being derated is because of cooling. The 4l85E is a very stout transmission.

correct!!! I have had a built 4l80 in my 1000HP camaro for 4 years now...... it lasted 3 of those without ever being touched, and then, it only started slipping the 3-4 clutches. I have been VERY happy with it.
That said, frontal area is less and underhood temps on the vans are wey higher than the pickup.... STOCK. Turn up the power, and you can quickly run into problems.
And like mentioned, EFILIVE and HPTuners are both available for tuning the Dmax vans. Just use your head and be carefull

I think this is the main reason.
Deere Freek 04-14-2008, 10:35 PM I wish they would come out with one if for no other reason to make it esier to install a D-max in my truck. I know it's probably not worth it but I thin it would be cool. Please excuse my ignorance but I though all the D-max vans had a 4l80 not a 4L85? What's the diffrence (if any)
ShopSpecialties 04-15-2008, 12:59 AM The trans is a 4L85 which is just a 4L80 with some upgraded internals.
EFI Support 04-15-2008, 07:24 AM IIRC the file layouts for the vans are ever so slightly different to the trucks. This requires us to create different mapping. I guess we went to the effort while others didn't.
Cheers

And I am gratefull:D
1lowdiesel 04-15-2008, 03:16 PM one of the biggest reasons is b/c the Manufatures don't test them on the vans, sma reason why they say most won't work on the kodiak or topkicks. i do knwo the T-dog works as well as some of their other modules like the rapid power.
Deere Freek 04-18-2008, 10:54 PM Now is the 4L85 on the vans a new thing? I got a build sheet for my dads savana once with the 6.0L and I'm pretty sure it had the 4L80. I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.
turboawd 04-19-2008, 12:36 AM its still the same trans. there are just a few upgraded parts.

Deere Freek 04-23-2008, 07:12 PM well you got there
lotsofmiles 04-25-2008, 10:03 AM I have a 2006 dmax express van, and 2007 dmax silverado. i can't find aftermarket/performance parts for the van. i can't even get an aftermarket reusable airfilter for the van. The van came off the lot with 250 hp vs 360hp on the truck. van has different intake, cooling, fuel filters, transmission, etc.
I did talk to the bully dog people. They said their triple dog unit will work with the van. I am a little concerned about using it only because I have had transmission problems with the van. GM has extended my trans warranty to 90,000, and i dont want to bump up th hp and have to drop another tranny in it out of my wallet
anyone else have 4l80e problems?
anyone know where i could get an allison put in my van?
ShopSpecialties 04-25-2008, 07:42 PM EFILive is the only way to go. What was the cause of your tranny problem ? I have about 40,000 on my van with no tranny failure and I am running a 50 horse tune.
Joey D 04-25-2008, 08:41 PM EFI live is the best option like said. Suncoast has a new set up coming soon for the 4l85 so give them a call.
turboawd 04-25-2008, 10:04 PM was your trans issue electrical or mechanical?
even the gm mechanics say that they usually dont see many 4l80s in for rebuilds until the gears start whining cause of high mileage.
lotsofmiles 05-01-2008, 07:59 AM 1st trans had a strange whine between 5-10 mph from the day I drove it off the lot. spent the next year convincing the dealer that was not normal. it had a spun bearing in the casing at the rear of trans. gm bought me a new trans. next trans lost reverse after 7000 miles. reverse band and piston. gm fixed that one. I cried to the gm reps on the phone and they extended my warranty until 90000 miles. I am a little concerned about bumping up hp and have another trans issue blamed on the hp. had the van back for 1000 miles and its leaking now...back in for more tranny repairs...
ShopSpecialties 05-01-2008, 07:49 PM Sounds like bad luck to me. What do you use your van for ? Driving style ? Towing ?
Putting my deep pan and synthetic fluid in next week. Little extra insurance.

What trans temps do you run now, city and highway?
Deere Freek 05-01-2008, 10:37 PM i would think you would have to give your van a 2" lift to put in an allison for clearance issues. they're tipsy to begin with lol.
lotsofmiles 05-02-2008, 04:09 PM The van is a 3500 and is around 9000lbs with all my equipment in it. A good combo of city/highway driving and a trailer once in a while (no more than 5000 lbs). No idea what the temps are running in the van as they don't put a trans temp gauge on the vans. I am the only driver of the van, and I'm not at all hard on it. I work my silverado alot harder
ShopSpecialties 05-02-2008, 06:39 PM What trans temps do you run now, city and highway?
I have not gone over 150 yet. With the warmer weather it has an average of 130-140.

Edge Insight is a good investment to look into.
Joey D 05-02-2008, 06:57 PM I have seen 170 as my highest so far.

Thanks, I'll look into edgeafter they fix my trans leak. Do you have any sources for fuel filters for the van. I haven't been able to find them anywhere but the dealer. I even talked to a Racor distributor directly. He couldn't even get them for me.
DIESAHL 05-04-2008, 11:24 AM sorry off topic but hey joey d i would love to see some pics of your van with that 5 inch exhaust
