: First oil change, Things learned.
GreshamCA 04-14-2008, 08:51 AM Did my first oil change yesterday on my new truck and learned a few things.
First, no matter what you read on this forum you wont have the catch pan far enough back so as not to mess up your driveway.
Second, no matter what you read on this forum about people crawling under their trucks( they must be tiny people) I still have to jack one side up to get under mine and it's 4X4.
Third, THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE EASIEST TRUCK TO CHANGE THE OIL ON THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN! :-)
bigdisneydaddy 04-14-2008, 09:19 AM I dont have to jack mine and I am only a biscuit under #300
wildcatbrownhound 04-14-2008, 09:55 AM I dont have to jack mine and I am only a biscuit under #300
:funnypost I am only one bisquit shy of 200 and I can get to anything I need to. :D
diesel geezer 04-14-2008, 10:01 AM I'm a few biscuits over 200# and I can get to most everything. But I can't roll over. You need to install a Fumoto oil drain valve. It gives you more time for eating biscuits!
GreshamCA 04-14-2008, 10:37 AM Well Mr. Mouse Ears, I am also just a biscuit under 300# and with my step rails I couldn't get under mine. I've got stock 245/75/16's on my truck and haven't raised the front.
BudTX 04-14-2008, 10:48 AM I use ramps under the front tires. Plenty of room.
GreshamCA 04-14-2008, 10:53 AM I had ramps for my old truck but I dont trust them for the Dmax. New Ramps are on the wish list. Got it Rhino-Line'd last week and DashHawk is being delivered today.
ColbyColorado04 04-14-2008, 11:03 AM I'm a few biscuits shy of 200# but it helps being 6'5" spreads it out over more area. LOL
With 285's and t-bars cranked and blocks in the rear I dont need the jack anymore. I will say when my truck was stock height I could not even fit under it. The biggest pain on my first change was the skid plate. Either get the fumoto Valve or notch the skid plate so you dont end up with a mess.
Tom S. 04-14-2008, 11:45 AM Ummm......biscuits!!!!!:D
Like others, my side steps get in the way, but the women folk can't get in to the truck without them.
I also notice you forgot to mention the fact that the factory filter was put on by an 800lb gorilla and then glued, screwed and welded in place - or wasn't this a new truck?
oldtrucks 04-14-2008, 12:43 PM x2 on the Fumoto valve. Add one of those plus a short piece of tubing and you could send your kids under to do it for you, just sit in the shade and eat biscuits and beer. But then there's always that filter
ColbyColorado04 04-14-2008, 01:25 PM Ohh yea someone needs to shoot that freaking Gorillia. He put the oil and tranny spin on way too tight. I completely crushed the oil filter the first time trying to loosen it. Spin on was pretty bad too. and I changed them both very early on too.
GreshamCA 04-14-2008, 01:40 PM No problems with the filters. They came right off. I guess a diet of biscuits and bourbon helped with that. OldTrucks, I'm 6'-5" and weigh in at 275. My smallest boy of three weighs in at 325 and is my height. They wont be crawling under the truck without a jack either.
oldtrucks 04-14-2008, 01:44 PM Send the wife under ;)
GreshamCA 04-14-2008, 01:54 PM She would if I asked her. She was pulling wrenches with me working on the tractor yesterday. Which venders on here sell the Fumoto valve?
Vin63 04-14-2008, 01:57 PM First, no matter what you read on this forum you wont have the catch pan far enough back so as not to mess up your driveway.
:o:Yep, I completely empathize. That's why I installed the Fumoto valve with the nipple - made the draining of the fluids a lot more controllable. The transfer case was worse...watch out for that one when you change the fluid.
chevy_dmax 04-14-2008, 01:58 PM Kennedy Diesel sells them.
I can't get under mine either, sounds like I’ve been eating biscuit longer than any of ya, I send my buddy who works on everything with me under it if were not rotating the tires.
As for that gorilla, needs to be shot and turned into a rug. I nearly dropped a third nut trying to get that factory one of mine off.
bigdisneydaddy 04-14-2008, 01:58 PM :funnypost I am only one bisquit shy of 200 and I can get to anything I need to. :D
Are we the only ones that can ?
WHAT... do the rest of you guys have arms like a T-rex ?
I did my T-case last week with the truck on the ground ?
Scott
Been everywhere 04-14-2008, 02:06 PM :funnypost Y'all are funny, I'm 6'5", weigh 335 and mine's a 2 wheel drive and I can get under there no problem, can't turn over, but can do the job.
hondarider552 04-14-2008, 02:10 PM x2 on the Fumoto valve. Add one of those plus a short piece of tubing and you could send your kids under to do it for you, just sit in the shade and eat biscuits and beer. But then there's always that filter
Homer Simpson: mmm BEEEERR
jpringle3 04-14-2008, 02:19 PM Well it was a good day yesterday so I changed the diff oils, 11823 K, I'm 250 Lbs and with the 17 inch tires and being a 3500, I get under OK but I do use a sheet of cardboard to slide under. When I did the oil change on the engine I drilled the oil pan plug pressed in a pencil magnet, Just like the drain plug in the front diff. I was never a big fan of putting a valve in the oil pan plug as I have seen problems with them leaking and being impacted with road debri even with a skid plate. PLAY SAFE!
wildcatbrownhound 04-14-2008, 07:35 PM :exactly:If you say biscuit in front of my avitar he goes wild. I got him to gnaw the oil filter off the first time. I like to have never got it off.
:lol2::lol2::lol2:
mschuyler 04-14-2008, 08:22 PM Reminds me of running wire. Just tie it onto the kid's leg and send him through. Promise him a Happy Meal if he gets out the other side.
Well, I'm 6'2 and a biscuit under 150. I can hear an echo as I'm changing my oil! :anitoof:
LTdann86 04-14-2008, 09:14 PM i use the old ladys biscuts to dry up any spilled oil :nono:
Cirrus 04-14-2008, 09:35 PM Well, I'm 6'2 and a biscuit under 150. I can hear an echo as I'm changing my oil! :anitoof:
I'm 6-1" and I haven't been 150 pounds since grade 8!!!
Still, I can get under without much problemo (the side steps DO make it more of a grunt!)
x 10 (who's counting) on the Fumoto valve. It should be 'standard' from the General!
I use ramps under the front tires. Plenty of room.
I put 2 2x6 pieces of pressure treated wood under my front tires when I park my truck so the front end is always up so I can crawl under to work on it, e.g., changing oil, tranny filter. Could probably use another piece of 2x6 wood if not high enough...

I think I like it as an accessory, could you imagine the problems vandals could cause knowing they could drain oil out that easily?
psimms 04-15-2008, 07:06 PM I guess Im one of the lucky one's my son work's at dobb's so I buy what I want and tell him to put it on the rack and do it this is something you should get from your children in return for what you have done for them. I did take him to new orleans for his 21'st oh what a party

im gunna have to agree with that...But.. not every vandal is gunna know you have a valve. i spy a wallet in the cab, not i spy a fumoto valve..
Cirrus 04-19-2008, 10:45 PM Yeah, I see alot of people looking in trucks, but not too many looking "under" the trucks, especially at night.......still!
:naughty:

Yeah but I could see some punks that couldn't get approved for a new truck jackin' with it on the lot.

I don't know, lately there has been a huge run on stolen Cats, a friend had two taken in his driveway. They crawl under at night with a cordless sawzall and cut it out, then sell to a recycler . I'd like to catch one and drive over the top of them

They can have my cat :D

Yeah, that's what must have happened to mine. They were nice enough to replace it with a straight pipe though! ;)
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
mmangels22 04-20-2008, 12:29 PM my truck is lifted so it is not too difficult to get under it. but i am wide shouldered so it is tough to roll under it. my first oil change on the truck was easy and thankfully saved some money. just a messy driveway was all and next time i will compensate for that. I actually enjoyed doing an oil change has been a while.

little bastards must been here to, good thing they carry strait pipes with them
