: WHAT DO YOU USE TO WASH YOUR TRUCK?

I am curious to know what everybody is using to wash the outside of the trucks. The owner manual says not to use dish washing liquid because it drys the paint. I have always used dish washing liquid on my vehicles with no problems. Is there any truth to that?

Dish detergents are special surfactants designed to quickly remove fats and oils from dishes. Good waxes and glazes are made from fats and oils. Dish soap will remove all of your wax protection.

IIRC dishwashing detergent has a very high alkali content. Max is right that it definitely removes wax for sure. Much better off using a product designed for washing cars such as McGuires, Zaino, Mothers or what have you. Edited by: Hound

Don't use dishwash soap regulary it's much to strong as stated. Actually it makes a good once a year wax stripper. Make sure you rinse very well. This idea is actually from the owner of Zaino wax. He suggests it to remove all old wax, prior to using Zaino.

I use Zip wax mostly but any brand name car wash would do.

Dunno, I'm just glad the automatic carwash near me can take trucks up to 7'. I got room to spare. It's great to sit back and watch the high school kids prewash it and the kids like all the multi colored soap!http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big%20Smile.gif

What about Ivory liquid, I was told it's not so harsh? I've used it for years and never seemed to notice wax removal. Is it made from the same stuff as other dish soap? It doesn't burn your eyes so I think it might be different but does anyone know for sure?

Dish detergents used to petrolium based..! It used to bubble the paint on your car, I guess they must have changed them..? It would still scare me to wash my truck with it though. I use Turtle Wax Car Wash but on a more regular i use the local Oasis car wash http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I've gotten real lazy so i don't take care like I used to.

I used to wash my vehicles with a 5 galllon bucket of hot water and a quart of kerosene poured in it. That would remove dirt, wax, tar and bugs. After that wash it a second time with car wash. Then a good wax. I'd do this at least once a year. Boy does that get your paint happy. The petroleum based kero fortifies the paint and leaves an oily residue in all the nooks and crannies. Truck glows after the wax job.

I was also told to NEVER leave wax on a vehicle for any length of time without buffing. It sucks out oils also. Edited by: hoot

Yes, I'm serious ... the filters "look" like regular oil filters ...same shape, size, etc. The only difference is they have absolutely no filtering media ...just some paper that looks like filter media ...but hey, who's going to notice !? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

DMAX2DAMAX

Oops then, cause I wasn't, I was just havin fun with a Mac el'cheap'o comment. Sorry!

Is there a connection between the filter media you refer to and the TurtleWax Zip Wax/Car Wash mentioned or a serious point about it you're trying to make that I didn't get? Is it worthless?

tophog
12-02-2003, 01:37 PM
No connection ... at least not intended. Just thought it was funny some people spend $40K on a truck but don't care what it looks like, or may never wash it ...if they do wash it, it may be twice year with Ivory or an SOS pad, etc. but they may run the very best oil filters, oil, tires, accessories, etc. There a word for this but I can't think of it ... certainly not trying to insult anyone ...just something I noticed when I read the thread. Perhaps I read into things too much. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif To each their own ...

Tophog,

Sounds like we're on the same page. I posted to this thread originally because I had always been told Ivory was very mild and wouldn't remove wax. I wash and wax often and want my vehicles to look their best always. When I asked about the Ivory others (Mac especially) suggested that the Ivory wasn't all I thought it was so I made the switch to a Car Wash/Wax to improve my truck's situation. In the discussion Mac made the el'cheap'o comment and that's where I was goin with the just havin fun.

I was serious about is it worthless because if it isn't any better I'd rather not use it. Price really never was the issue!

BTW, I wasn't insulted but was trying to be certain I hadn't insulted anyone either!

tophog
12-02-2003, 02:01 PM
Glad to hear I didn't offend anyone... my comments stemmed more from people I know personally. I do know people that buy very expensive vehicles ... then never wash them, run the crap out of them and never service them, go 4 wheelin and rip bumpers off, dent doors ...never have them fixed, see how muddy they can get their truck, never wash it, etc. I have yet to understand the mentallity of this type of individual ...then again I'm not a doctor http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif and it really isn't my business.

DMAX2DAMAX
12-02-2003, 02:06 PM
I tend to go the other extreme, I tow my 4 wheeler to the woods then park the Dmax and ride the 4 wheeler into the woods. I don't mind washin & waxin, but I sure wouldn't want to get it muddy! I even try to keep the bottom side as clean as new if possible.

DMAX2DAMAX, I'm with you. My wife thinks I'm crazy ...last weekend when I was washing the truck she asked "What's the weird shaped brush for?" ... Of course el'cheap'o doesn't have a special brush.

I've been having to learn a lot since movin up from an 85 6.2 to a dmax. Then Ivory to a Car Wash/Wax and now a new brush. The technological advancements are staggering!

Do you have any pics of the weird shaped brush?? http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_2_11.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001)

The brush isn't actually funny looking IMO ... I think it's actually a normal looking car wash brush however I'd never use any brush on my surface paint. I like the longer handle as it makes it's easier to brush the inside of the fender wheels without having to stick your hand/arm up in there ...a long hand truck wash brush work work just as good.

Finally got to use Mr Clean Carwash this weekend since it was fairly warm. The results were great. The system attaches to a garden hose and contains a soap container and a water purifier cartridge. It has 3 settings, plain water at high flow for wetting/rinsing. A soap setting and a low flow fine rinse that uses conditioned water to remove all water droplets and spots. There is also an on/off lever that stops water flow if you wish. I grabbed a sponge, wetted the truck, then went to work with the soap spraying from one hand and the sponge rubbing in the other. The system made quick work of the truck and it was spotless when I finished. I didn't time how long it took but it seemed I was finished in no time.

I'm hoping someone comes out with just a screw on water filter. I'd like to use my own soap, etc. and be able to use "softened" water as the water at my house is really hard ... water spots up the yang yang if you don't wipe off quickly. It's so bad I don't wash at all when the sun is out ...I always wash the harley in the garage out of the sunlight and take the 150 mph yard blower to her. Have washed the truck in their before but get too many weird looks from the neighbors. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Edited by: tophog
