I think I need to check my glow plug system as the weather is getting warmer the truck is getting harder to start especially since I am not plugging it in anymore. If i need glow plugs in my 1993 which type should I be purchasing 60g or 9g?
Thanks

60g could be also delphi !

9g, 11g and 60g is only the type of glowplugs.

Delphi is a manufactor of these, but there are some other manufactors also, like Bosch, Beru, etc.

x2 Bosch and or duratherms.
The Standerd Bosch, $11 at Auto Zone has gaven me many years of service. After 5yrs I have lost 4 glow plugs. Time for a new set and this is where the Duratherms come in.
Now I would not use the 9g but what about the storys I hear that to get the 60g to work right that they need Ext. glow time to be of any use?
So after the 60g go in and we hear about cold, cold temps. starting issue we reply by saying, "What you need to do is add button to your relay so you can get more glow time, say around 20 sec. and you should be good to go"! :)
The glow time set by the pcm is alittle short though was good for the 9g.
The Bosch is good for the glow time, they heat really quick and after glow of the plug is also important, they stay hot longer after the relay has shut down.
There are other glow plugs that stand up to the test.
Quick Heat's by J Kennedy Diesel.
Duratherms by Heath Diesel and others
I would rethink about the 60g and search out this topic.;)

Delphi is Delco Philadelphia.

I am not sure if their GP are manufactured by the same company.

All four of our 6.5's at work are runnin' 60g's. They all start fine with normal glow time, except mine. I added a manual controller because I was tryin' diagnose a problem. After I had done some head work to my truck, it would start great cold and hot, but not warm. When warm, it starts then stalls immediatley. I only added the manual controller to see if extendin' the glow time would help. Shouldn't have made a difference since the engine is already warm, but it did.

I know I still have some other issue which I believe is air and low compression. Since usin' the over-ride cures the starts I have never bothered to look any further. The other side of that is that I love havin' the option when cold of givin'er more glow if I want for a nice clean start. Anyway, what I'm tryin' to say is the 60g's do work on normal glow time for a lot of people, so I wouldn't kill the idea of usin' them. And like I said, it's very nice to have the option in the colder months, and addin' a manual controller is an extremely easy mod to do.

Mine started just fine this morning at 34 degrees, wasnt plugged in and i have the original 1996 60g glow plugs. 231k on them. Some may have had good luck with other plugs but from what ive seen on this forum and others, 60gs are pretty much the only way to go if you want them to last. If you need a little extra glow plug time, just turn the key off and back on again. Again tho, never had a problem with my 60gs even in the single digits and they are the originals from 12 years/231,000 miles ago.

I thought our truck came with 11g???

IIRC, the bad thing about 9G is that it sometimes swell, hence it is difficult to take out without falling apart. I have not heard about 11G or 60G to fall apart. TD said that 11G which is branded as Autolite is working fine in his.

Not supposed to be. I haven't verified myself but the part number for the glow plugs (when i looked for them) for a 96 suburban was 60g. http://198.208.187.182/internet/Vehicle.jsp look up 96 Chevy suburban 1500 6.5L and search for glow plug. I think the 9g and 11g were for 6.2s and early 6.5s.

Could be because 11g are no longer made?? I'm not being argumentive(sp?) , I just don't know the answer but thought that we had 11g from the factory.:confuzeld

if ya want some extended glow time just open the hood, unplug the coolant sensor. this makes the computer think its like -40* outside and makes the glow time prob. about twice as long...works great for me. i think i'm gonna splice in a switch so that i can do it in cab instead of having to open the engine compartment everytime i wanna do it. more of an accident i found this out really, but its served me quite well :D

Yep, that's another easy way to extend it. You get longer glow, advance timin' amd more fuel when you start it that way.

Chevy Diesel Guy, could you tell me where the coolant sensor is located that you unplug to extend your glow plug time?
Thank you,

Howdy from Borneo ya'll,

Delphis good plug, 9G (swell) no longer made; 11G (don't swell but don't like extended glow cycle) no longer AC/Delco made are what came in both my 98's from factory, AutoLite 1110 is what Advance auto carries as replacement for 11G, marked on box as equivalent no issues seen with those, AC/Delco 60G is what ORiley's carries probably best easy to get plug or Delphi, I tested Delphis vs Kennedy Quick Heats (Good plug) Delphi slightly quicker to heat maybe 1/2 sec or so when put to battery direct, and watch for full glow middle to tip. Hear but have not seen myself Duratherms are good, WAP plugs SSD sells have been problematic, maybe fixed maybe not, but will only replace 2 bad plugs once or so I've been told by some.

BTW IMO only valid way to test individual glow, direct to batt., look for tip to glow quickly tip to center of plug, as resistance reading can be good but not fully heating in time stock glow controller allows for, (if tip only glowing in 3-4 sec, need to replace the plug)

sort of like bad hot water heater or stovetop heating element, reads good continuity, but takes longer time to heat up when they start breaking down.

VERIFY CURRENT PLUGS BEFORE extending glow time, do not extend glow 11G or 9G, do not forget to verify glow relay is working also, see info in FAQ

anyone know of WAP constant duty plugs? I was going to put them in just the # 4 & 6 just because I have the old ones out. Old ones seem OK but rusty connectors on 2. Just wondering if I should be mix and matching with old 11 G's, or if no harm done. I'll eventually put a manual system in with all constant duty but until then...? thanks anybody.

i've heard WAP plugs aren't so good. if you plan on putting a manual system in just go with 60Gs or Bosch duratherms. those two brands have proven themselves where as the name WAP seems to be a bit soiled but how well their plugs were made at one point. i don't know if the plugs have been re-made so they don't swell and burn out but its not something i personally want to find out. personally i'l only use 60Gs or duratherms when i replace my glow plugs.

thanks a lot, yeah, I had WAP's in a 7.3 before, and they did burn out, and swell
