: 6.5 mods on the way
joispoi 02-06-2005, 03:46 PM We just sold the car that our suburban replaced. Now it's time to spend some of that money on some goodies;) . I'm leaning heavily toward a 4" exhaust from ssdiesel supply. If anyone has a better idea, I'm all ears. SS also sells a k&n type cone filter that replaces the stock air filter box. My question is, will the cabin noise increase or decrease if I replace the factory airbox? The cabin noise from the motor is already louder than I like. I think all the noise comes from the turbo (possibly loud because of a restrictive air filter box??)
Turbine Doc 02-06-2005, 03:53 PM 4" is a great mod to start with, does it come with new downpipe, SS is a new one on the scence for me, I've not heard any bad about them, check out Kenney & Heath Diesel, noise will not increase appreciably if at all, careful mods are addictive. After pipes need a set of gauges before adding anything else.
spindrift 02-06-2005, 05:02 PM I've spoken with SS Diesel and all requests for product info have been returned promptly and professionally. Don't know how much real diesel knowledge they have but they have been getting more "air time" on this, and other, forums. Maybe it's time for our administrators/moderators to give them a call and ask for some sponsorship $.
MrTailLight 02-06-2005, 05:23 PM hey joispoi, i buy alot of goods from SSdiesel Supply and Walt takes very good care of you. the only major part i did not buy from them was the 4" exhaust.
i bought mine outright from this fella off of ebay, but ebay is how i found him:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7951474264&category=33630&sspagename=WDVW
i just installed mine last night on my 94 suburban, and WOW, what an easy install. the stock factory pipe is sooooo restricted in the down pipe, and in the pipe under the cross member under the passengers front seat. down to about 2" at the MAX.
this kit i posted above has NO squash points in the exhaust, including the down pipe......a straight clean install! :ro)
lupey6.5 02-07-2005, 09:22 AM the cone filter intake that ssdiesel sells is flawed. it does not have an airbox around it to keep hot underhood air away. this is a leathal combo to a turbo charged non intercooled diesel sporting compression over 20:1. the airbox mods on kennedys site under tech tips is a much better approach as the factory box draws from outside the truck.
quantum mechanic 02-07-2005, 10:26 AM I recently compared the exhaust sound between my 3" straight pipe and a JK 3.5" that wraps the rear axle. The exhaust note was identical (open) but I couldn't help wondering what the 3.5" would sound like if it was an axle bend shorter.
guybb3 02-08-2005, 11:53 AM hey mrtaillight, do you have a website for that exhaust? I couldn't get one form the ebay page you posted
Firefighter 02-08-2005, 12:31 PM You could save some more money and get a 3.5" Flowmaster tailpipe kit and then all you need is a 3.5" straight pipe from the downpipe to tailpipe. If you want, chuck a muffler in just before the tailpipe. I have done a system on my 3/4 ton extcab longbox and my 1 ton Crew cab longbox this way. Without a muffler I think my grand total was $120 cad each.
Turbine Doc 02-08-2005, 12:35 PM Whitneys sells flex stainless exhaust tube also another option if on a budget, I like the kitted solutions offered by various vendors just a matter of completing the look, but if money is tite & you don't have talent or equipment to fab your own you gotta do what you gotta do.
joispoi 02-08-2005, 05:55 PM It's done. I ordered the 4" exhaust from ssdiesel. Held off on the cone filter- thank you, Lupey. I was concidering the one on ebay, but that one is only 4" from the muffler back. I figure for an extra $50 why not go straight to 4" at the down pipe?
Just so everyone knows, it's Canadian Rigger's fault that I ordered 4" exhaust!! Love the video! Had to have it for myself ;) .
nvmtnlion 02-08-2005, 06:38 PM josipoi, race ya.. ordered mine today too! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/cool2.gif
joispoi 02-08-2005, 07:23 PM How fast's your UPS guy?
nvmtnlion 02-08-2005, 09:10 PM Reno is a UPS hub http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/rockon.gif
As soon as I follow Turbine Doc's info on how to hook up the gauge lights I am gonna take pix of them. The marine gauges are white with blue lettering and I can't wait to see em lit. I am also going to take pix of my downpipe. I think it's as bad as Bumpin' Yota's or worse.
cjk65 02-08-2005, 10:04 PM I love that video as well, I am trying to figure out a way to convince wiffey I can't live without it, did that come with a straight pipe and no muffler?
crowne 02-09-2005, 12:46 AM joispoi> Let me know how loud it sounds.I'm looking to do the same with Flowmaster.
Anyone know how much more louder is it from 3" to 4" straight pipe and no muffler?
joispoi 02-09-2005, 05:45 AM Crowne, check out Spintech mufflers. I put a pair of them on my Ford 5.8L. They're heavier construction than the flowmasters and are as loud:D . They also cost a lot less. (I think 2 Spintech's cost the same as 1 flowmaster- haven't checked in a few years). Only draw back is that they are not aluminized. Mine have do-it-yourself ceramic coat on them and they're holding up well.
crowne 02-09-2005, 09:27 AM joispoi> They don't stock the Spintech product here, shipping it up would add to the cost. Have a friend in auto parts, he can get me the Flowmaster below retail.
gmctd 02-09-2005, 01:34 PM Don't throw away yer old stuff, just yet, folks - EGR, oxidizing convertors, mufflers, etc.
Next year - 2006 - ALL street-driven Diesel trucks will require Federal Emissions Inspection - period.
All states will be forced to comply, in order to receive ANY other Federal funding - streets, highways, buildings, waterways, schools, etc.
Be a veritable rush-hour traffic jam on these forums, on that day, I'll warrant.....
nvmtnlion 02-09-2005, 02:23 PM GMCTD,
Don't I know it. I spent about an hour over at the Nevada DMV emissions lab talking to their head compliance guy before I ordered my 4" system. I am also ordering a hi-flow soot trap from the same place vice gutting my old one. I wanted to make damn sure that I was ok come next testing cycle. They don't do that insane snap test but I will be compliant, or at least "look compliant" http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif

This has been coming for sometime. It's part of the buy a new vehicle or else
laws. you just thought you'd keep it going for another 15 years.
crowne 02-09-2005, 03:00 PM gmctd> Anything said for us canadians?
gmctd 02-09-2005, 03:30 PM Only if y'all express some desire to become a US colony! ;)
No idea as to how the 2006 mandate will effect vehicles crossing the border(s), tho.
Usually won't be no big deal, long as the oxidizing convertor has sufficiently oxidized all the soot (after a long hard run with extra cetane booster), and they do not perform the killer 'snap' test, as mandatory.
'Sposed to be a combo gas\opacity detector shoved up yer tailpipe, and a computer does the sniffing, and compared to your test from previous year, for same VIN.
Oh, yeah - 'Boy, this here truck's gettin' mighty long in the tooth, ain't it? Wal', ya gotta choict', son - yew c'n replace it naow, er we'll replace it fer ya! And we ain't gonna be nun tew gentle, 'bout it, if'n it cums to thet.......'
CanadianRigger 02-09-2005, 03:32 PM Yes how about it? If we drive down there blowing black smoke everywhere are we exempt while were on our holiday?
quantum mechanic 02-09-2005, 03:44 PM I'd be surprised if they mandate tourist vehicles be checked from the north.
CanadianRigger 02-09-2005, 03:52 PM Keep your ears open for a turbo whistle louder than a Mac truck, an exhaust rumble that'll shake your windows, and eyes open for a silver Chevy diesel making a cloud of black smoke pulling a 28' 5th wheel trailer sometime in late spring then... lol
joispoi 02-09-2005, 05:02 PM next mod...soot trap becomes decorative sleeve on 4" exhaust. :weld:
"But I have a soot trap....just look under the truck....honest...
.....well then your machine must be broken....." :idiot:
Watch out for 4" advertisement no kits for the 6.5 have a 4" down pipe, they all have to start at 3" to mate up to the turbo then they up size at different points. I got the $290 ebay kit, from the turbo about 18" of 3" then about 36" of 3.5" then 4" in and out muffler and 4" back from there. I haven't finished installing it yet (only the down pipe is on, very loud) but it gets me to work and back until the weekend.

BS on this my old 1971 Bronco has PERMANT plate so never has to be renewed and next year my truck can have the same. Also Montana has never had any testing or inspection and if the legislator is going to do it they better get it done right now as when the session ends in April they won't be back until 2007.
