For all you tire experts out there, I'm wondering if I can plug this cut in my tire. Discount tire said they won't fix it as it is a liability for them. Its technically sidewall damage. What do you guys think. The tire has another 30 -40k left in tread. I don't want a mismatch new tire and I don't want to buy a pair. ($500)

It looks like it's in the softer sidewall and if it is I'd say no and it's not worth the risk. I understand you not wanting to waste it and spend all that money but if it does take a plug and hold there's a good chance it won't last and could blow out with you doing 65 down the highway.

Fixing that tire would be an accident just waiting to happen!! Next time you buy tires spring for the road hazard warranty. It saved me on a set of tires on my Corvette. Had a sidewall cut 2 days after installing the tires and the new $400.00 tire was free!!!!

I agree with Tallone, not worth the risk. Makes that "Road Hazard" insurance look like a deal

I have plugged worse in a sidewall with no problems, but it was on a s10 not a 7K truck.

I'd run it as a spare. Not an everyday tire.

Could you put a tube in a tire like that?

I plugged a similar hole in a sidewall and it holds air, I'd never use it as anything but a spare. I Took the motorhome somewhere it shouldn't have been and caught a rock in the duals.

why dont you patch it, i used to fix tires for a company, a patch will hold no prob. Ive fixed tractor tailer tires and had almost 10 patches throughout hahaha

As far as I'm concerned, trying to fix that tire would be a rolling accident waiting to happen.

If you wouldn't want to risk running it all the time, what makes you think it would be any good for your spare?

If you are on the road when you have to use it as a spare, how do you know how far it will last? How fast are you willing to drive on it?

I guess that my life and my family's life are worth a hell of a lot more than a cut tire.

I would hate to have that thing blow at 70 mph and kill someone. Lawyers will have a field day.

Oh, well. Everyone sets their own price for life and limb.

the two most important things on a car....the brakes, and the tires-

Had the same prob once we just put a tube in it to get me home and then got new and used as spare with tube in place.

If you do drive on it spare or otherwise I would put it on the back so the force of cornering doent rip it any larger thats where it will start then it will blow

If do ANY towing I would not attempt unless you have no choice

I would rate steering ahead of brakes. :D

if you can stop..why would you need steering?

I wouldnt patch it as it looks more like a slit than a hole in the side.

Too risky and not worth the risk of tire failure.

I would ask them to put a boot in it and then a tube and use it as spare.

You can't stop instantaneously. You need to be able to steer while you're trying to stop.

You can actually coast for quite a long ways with no brakes as long as you can steer through obstacles, but without steering, you are in deep doo doo.

You can have it vulcanized and sectioned in. We have them done all the time. But its really Dependant on where you live. I'm from the central valley here in Cali so we have a lot of trucker traffic. A bunch of local re-cappers and such...... Just an idea.

Put a tube in it and use it as a spare. Is the $500 to repalce the pair really worth risking it? Have one of your buddies in the motor pool break it down and put a tube in it, then buy him lunch and go wheeling.
