: where to put CB radio?

I originally had my Cobra 29 Nightwatcher mounted directly above the gas pedal side right underneith the dash. some might think it would hit my leg, but it didnt. however when the gf drives my truck, it hits her shin, so then I have to listen to her bitch about it. I know the easiest solution is to not let her drive the truck, which I should do anyway :D but I was going to mount it in the center console pocket here

So I popped it out, and tried to slide it in there, and of course, it doesnt fit. It would fit if I cut the bottom out of it, so before I started cutting, I checked and this piece on GMPartsDirect.com is about $70 bucks

Lotta money to spend if I don't like it. So what would you guys recommend? I don't want it ontop of the dashboard with velcro or anything, idk what else to do.....

in my 03 Tahoe i had it mounted right beside my right leg, pointing straight up on the side of the console. it can get in the way there if someone is sitting behind you and you have to scoot up. other than that, it stayed out of the way for the most part. although, it wasnt the best looking spot for it. maybe do it the same way, but on the pass side??

just my .02

I wouldnt want to mount it on the side just in case seats to need to be moved up. I want to mount it some place where it can stay permenantly.

I think it would look pretty good inside that holder, my friend has a 04 chevy and I know if i had a newer truck thats where it would be going if I had that console.

Mount it to the roof just above the mirror.

Actually, they have these new things out. Much smaller and don't need those huge ugly antennas. I think they are called cellular phones. :p::D

Have mine mounted on passenger side of console, angled up. I'll try to take a pic and put it on here. If you open the glove box, the door is about 1/2 inch from hitting cb.

Like the others say, you can only scoot the front seat up about halfway, but its fine. I also wanted to mount it where your trying, its a no go, even with the smaller CB like I have.

I have a much smaller CB than cobra 29. Even if you mount the 29 on side console...you may not be able to bring seat up near as far do to its width.

Gm just wasn't thinking of us installing the hillbilly cell phones...:D

Does anyone make any type of overhead consoles for CB's? I want to put mine in the consol that has the lights in it, but I don't think it will be deel enough and was wondering if there was anything out there to help with that.

EDIT: I have the 60-40 bench in the front and dont have a center console like the dual buckets. There is a pic of the front interior in my garage.

Search "75WXST" on here. The brains go behind/under the glove box, the mic/control head hangs from a panavise bracket to right of the stereo, and it supports an external speaker. All 20 or so of mine have a measured four watt output. Never a failure. And it looks good.

Thats exactly where I put mine,I like it. I couldn't find anywhere else to mount it where I wouldn't be kicking it or be cramped by it. There are not a lot of open spaces for something like this to mount when you really look at the interior of these trucks. I've got a small one(cb that is) so I didn't have to cut the whole back out. Just a couple holes for the antenna lead and power wires. So it wouldn't be too hard to plug the holes if I wanted to remove it.

Last time I went on a trip nobody called to tell me there was a cop or an accident ahead on my cell phone.

Have mine mounted in the same position. Works out great and doesnt interfere with the passenger or glove box and my radio being a Galaxy 959 is larger than most cb's.

And to go on any radio controlled road you sure can not call your location on a cell phone. Plus unless your running a 3watt booster your little cell phone wont work. The middle counsole is the best spot if it is a regular sized radio.

my cobra 29 doesnt even fit through the opening of the pocket, so there is going to be extensive cutting if I want it in there. I'm thinking im just gonna go for it and cut the **** out of it. I really don't know where else to go with it, and I don't want to drill holes on the side of my console to mount it, so cutting a pocket that is easily replaced seems like a better option. I have to work all weekend, so I will work on it sunday evening or monday. After I get it done I will take pics for those interested.

Can some people with 40-20-40 (with fold up console) front seats post some pics of where they installed thier CB? I am having a hard time trying to find a place that is clean looking and doesn't look like I put on a blindfold and stuck somewhere with double sided tape.

Follow this thread using etkeeny's pics as a guide: http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=155961&highlight=radio+install

I just finshed the cutting this morning. Here is the test fit on mine without any cleanup. The Prodigy is hooked up and working, but the radio is not hooked up yet. I think a right angle adapter will be helpful on the back of the radio. The CB is slightly off square, but a little nudge will fix that.

I thought about putting it there, but I think it will look kinda clustered cause I have my PMT bracket in the cubby to the left of the ash tray(just added pics of it in my garage). I don't smoke either, and wouldn't car about covering the ash tray up.

Speaking of CBs, does anyone see interference on their gauges they installed?

On my old Ford when I transmitted the Trans Temp guage would bump. And on my EGT reading on the Juice sent my EGTs through the roof until moved the wire.

Two different CBs and trucks. I also do not think the ground had anything to do with it.

These radio were also peaked and tuned.

Back on track with the subject, that is where I installed our CB. It will require some plastic trimming, but the finished product looks great.

I looked at mounting my Galaxy 595 in that same spot. Looked like it would not fit.

Do you have any pictures? Like to see how it turned out and what tricks did you have to use to get it to work.

Thanks

Mounted my Texas Ranger next to my Brake Controller under the dash. Check out my garage and you'll see. I was even more limited due to the 6-Speed. The wire is not still hanging down. Those pics were taken during installation.

I just bought an 03 with a CB in it that I removed. They basically
cut the back of the pocket out. The CB stuck out about 2in from the face of the pocket. I can posts some pics tomorrow. I'll trade you for one that cut out already:D

Have a 03' 3500 and mounted it in the bottom center hole, and had to cut the back of the pocket out. Then put a noise filter under the center cup holder, and a ext. speaker on the driver side. will post pic. later of my setup.

What did you have to do to get the center cup holders out of the console?

I am looking to install a CB in my 08 and found a spot but need to remove that cup holder in order to get it in, just don't want to start tugging on it and break it.

im running mine with guages and have not noticed anything weird but i was told with the gauge wires and coax cable running through the same hole in fire wall i might get interference but im lucky so far. i have a stainless cable though.
