Guys,

Not sure if this is the right area for this thread, however....

I was talking with a good friend today and found out something that I wanted to pass one. From a very reliable source the Connecticut DOT has a gun that they use to check any vehicle that might be using home heating (red dye) oil in their vehicle.

It seems as the red dye that is in the oil emits a gas that is detectable by this gun. The DOT will sit on the side of the road, as of lately I-95, with the gun pointing at a stretch of road. It will scan every vehicle that goes by and whamo... if you happen to be running off road fuel that got you.

I am pretty sure that if Connecticut has this gun, then others states have it... and at a cost of some $5 to $10k or what ever the fine is... I would not want to get caught...

Also seems like this is information that they really don't want to publicize too much off ...

Just thought I would pass it on...

I dont believe that a gun simply pointed at traffic can detect red diesel or whatever.

Guys,

I have had now 2 other people, 1 from CT and 1 from Mi tell me that they have seen the guns in use. Like I said.. it detects the gas being emited by the red dye.

Manny believe me or not... I only passed on what I have been told...

The sniffer.(gun) Detects the higher sulfer in the (farm-red die) diesel. Here in idaho the state police and d.o.t. have them and use them alot. My inlaws are farmers And have been checked by the state tax commision.

Is this "red dye" diesel the same thing as Diesel #1 or offroad diesel? It is not the same as biodiesel is it? Sorry, new to this and trying to learn.

The red dyed #1 is the same as #1, and the red dyed #2 is the same as #2. The red dyed is for home heating and off-road use only, and is not taxed as fuel at the pump is. The red dye makes it easier for the man to catch you and fine you for using it where you're not supposed to. I don't know if bio-diesel is used off road or not; might depend on where you're at.

Very interesting. Here in Cali. clear No.2 and off road red are the same fuel, one with dye and the other without (both low sulfer only).
However, in Oregon off road fuel can be either a low sulfer dyed (same as Clear no.2) or a high sulfer dyed fuel. In Cali. the high sulfer can be imported but by the definition of the law it is only supposed to be used in non-rolling stock ONLY. ie. generators, heaters etc.
My question is this; if this (sniffer)gun detects the higher sulfer in the dyed fuel one could probably get away with running the low sulfer dyed. I have never heard about this gun but I have heard about a handfull of farmers, ranchers getting nailed for using red fuel. I have also heard that DOT on occasion will pull in light duty trucks and check their fuel by taking a sample and visibly checking for dye. If there is even a hint of dye, they own ya.
My advice is this. Pay the road tax!!! Chances are that the little money one could save will not be more than what one WILL pay when and if they get cought.
just my 02' (LB7) cents.
