: A better serpentine belt
a bear 02-05-2005, 04:22 PM Just thought I'd share a little info. Many of you may use this belt already. I just decided to give it a try on my truck. The person who sold it to me swares by them in regards to squeaking. Dayco is also a supplier of OEM belts for several higher end import vehicles.
As I understand it then and now the few problems with serpentine belts are heat induced drying, fatigue cracks at the ribs from counter flexing which picks up dirt which then becomes part of the belt and causes hardening/slipping/squeaking. Hopefully this style belt will help with heat and the squeaking I've read about here. See the below link for a better explanation.

Horse Trainer 02-05-2005, 04:39 PM I ran Dayco belts on my '68 Camaro race car - the only belt that would not get tossed out of the old style pullies at high RPM. They do have a good product - might hace to try one on my truck.
Hound 02-05-2005, 08:39 PM Looks somewhat similar to the Goodyear Gatorback belt. Glad to see there's another option now.
kbstinky 02-05-2005, 09:13 PM What is the change interval for the belts??????

Do you have the part #? Are LB7 and LLY different? Thanks
a bear 02-06-2005, 09:59 AM Not sure if the PN. for the LLY is the same or not but the LB7# PN is 5061115 (Single Alternator) The Cost was $33.88 + tax at Advance Auto Parts. ;)
Black Max 02-06-2005, 03:00 PM  Thanks for the info!

Do not use this PN. It's the wrong belt

Abear, Is it the wrong belt or just the wrong PN? The belt looks interesting.
SPICER 02-08-2005, 10:03 PM I am having the cold weather-wet weather squeel/chirp again too. My belt was replaced at about 8k miles. Now at 38k it is back. If I get a new belt I would like to put it on myself. Any tips on doing this job?
I am assuming my belt is not under the 100k mile warranty, or is it? It WAS already replaced under warranty once. Any advice? SPICER

Its the wrong belt and PN. Will have to wait untill I return home next week to look for the correct one. I'll post the number if someone else hasn't posted it by then.

There is a 1/2" square hole in the side of the tentioner arm. A 1/2" drive ratchet will fit this hole, then with just a simple push down on the ratchet the tentioner will swing in so the belt can easily be removed and replaced. In a minute or two the belt will be changed. :)

Thanks! I will probably try cleaning it with dish soap? Then try cleaning the pulleys with non-chlorinated brake cleaner? Atleast this is what I gather from a search on the topic. I am fixin' for a 3,500 mile trip to Texas and back with a camper and want to cover all my bases. I can see my wife and kids in a dealership somewhere in Oklahoma because of a squeeky belt. My wife has a very mean look on her face. Would rather not go there! SPICER
acehi 02-09-2005, 01:56 AM My belt squeels to. but I think my tensioner is too loose/weak. It bounces a lot at idle. It was replaced once at about 30k miles. Is this also something that is covered under the 100k?
Also, I am interested in knowing if that is the wrong belt or the wrong part #
Jeff
Victory Red 02-09-2005, 05:47 AM I too suffer the wet weather belt chirp. I just live with it.
Max Payne 02-09-2005, 10:04 AM I have addressed "accessory whine" concerns before that were caused by a serp belt with grooves like the Dayco pictured. Replacing the belt with a non-grooved belt cured the whine... But, these were gassers that run at higher RPM. It may not be an issue with the lower RPM diesels. Just a heads up...
neverenuf 02-09-2005, 02:15 PM I put the poly-cog on my D/A and on my '99 Tahoe. The Tahoe just started squeaking like a SOB about 8k miles (2 months) after the install. Tried some STP belt dressing, the squeak is now multiplied about 50x. It's only at low RPM's. I hate it. I'm going to replace the ideler pully and tensioner and see if it helps.
jasper2222 02-09-2005, 06:12 PM I went by Advance auto parts and they did not show any listing for the duramax?
neverenuf 02-10-2005, 05:16 PM Jasper,
Ask the guy/girl behind the counter if they have a replacemnt gear drive for your power steering pump then.):h Seriously I think I got mine from AutoZone....or one of the auto parts chain stores:confuzeld I like the Goodyear Gatorback belt better, if you can find one for the Dmax.
Frank Blum 02-10-2005, 09:22 PM This just keeps going around and I have recommended an inexpensive fix several times but no one is listening. The belt will easily go 100K with a little PM. Later! Frank

OK, I'm listening. Was this the belt dressing idea? My belt was already replaced under warranty so it is not that old. Please repeat, or are you blue in the face? SPICER
neverenuf 02-11-2005, 09:51 AM OK. I just removed the earplugs....whats that you say?:secret:

Frank Blum 02-12-2005, 04:10 PM Permatex belt dressing in a spray can. Sprayed back and fourth on the top of the power steering pulley until the belt is completely black. I started using this on my 89 and have never had a frayed belt, squeal etc. It works and STP absolutely will not. I spray mine when servicing the engine. It is hot and dusty here eight months a year. I have never has a problem with dirt. Later! Frank
PS: No blue face SPICER just the blue can. This stuff has not worked for me on "V" belts for some reason.
neverenuf 02-13-2005, 10:14 AM Shi* I can't find the permatex around here. The belt fianally quit squeeking on the tahoe though.

Blue can? Where can I find it SPICER
Frank Blum 02-13-2005, 11:59 PM SPICER, I buy mine at Autozone. They were out once and I tried STP. No cigar on that one. I would think NAPA would be a place to look. I will look around. Later! Frank
SPICER 02-15-2005, 12:10 PM I've been to 2 Autozone's, only had STP belt dressing. Will check others when I get the chance. Frank, was your squeel/chirp weather dependent also? Like worse in humid/wet/cold weather? Also, do you only spray the top/smooth side of the belt or both sides? SPICER
Frank Blum 02-15-2005, 05:59 PM The only time I had a problem was when I forgot to spray the belt when servicing. It was dry from the lack of humidity. I spray the top of the grooved power steering pulley with the engine running. Just a few seconds back and forth will do. There will be a little flying off the belt so wear your safety glasses of stand back a little. It won't hurt the paint but I always wipe up any splatter. I just picked up a can at the local True Value hardware store. I will post a link to some photos shortly. Later! Frank

Thanks again.
a bear 02-16-2005, 09:01 AM Frank, Good info. Look's like you finally got someone to listen this time. :D
Sounds like some good stuff and it says it's OK to use on flat belts.

02AlliMax 02-20-2005, 11:39 PM Belt Dressing.............WASTE of money (imo) use a candle! I'm sure we all have a few of those laying, or, standing around the house. I've never had a squeek problem after using a candle. A big plus also......its cheap
RyanU 02-21-2005, 04:23 AM how do u use a candle????
Max Payne 02-21-2005, 10:31 AM Could you imagine what your wife would do when she found six deep grooves burnt into one of her pretty candles? At least your engine compartment would smell all flowery):h

acehi 02-21-2005, 01:27 PM I can see the wax on the belt stopping the squeeling, but wouldn't it allow the belt to slip more? You just wouldn't hear it slipping because of the smooth wax build-up.
Jeff

I'm with Max on this one - I tried one of these Dayco poly cog belts on my wife's Durango and it had a pretty loud whining sound which varied with engine RPM. After about 20k miles it finally wore in enough that I no longer hear it now. Just my experience - your mileage may vary...
SPICER 02-21-2005, 04:00 PM I ordered some permatex belt dressing (nowhere to be found around here). I will report on it when I get it. BTW, apparently locktite has bought permatex. SPICER
Frank Blum 02-21-2005, 09:25 PM 20 years ago before we had real dressing I used a bar of soap on my "V" belts. It worked great for a couple weeks. My local GM dealership uses spray dressing on every outfit they service. I don't know what brand. Later! Frank
SPICER 02-27-2005, 08:45 AM I got the betl dressing. I had to order it through a distributor, and when I got it the can said "LOCTITE belt dressing". Loctite bought Permatex. Some products are still called Permatex and may continue to be called that. The belt dressing apparently is name named Loctite. I used it. The truck is parked inside today so it will be a poor indicator. Squeel and chirp is always worst in col/damp conditions. The belt is still in excellent condition. It was replaced under warranty for the same problem. The noise went away for about a year. Hopefully this stuff will do the trick. Thanks for the advice. SPICER

You wouldn't hear the belt over your wife chewing you out for ruining her candle. :D
jasper2222 02-27-2005, 12:05 PM I have about 70,000 miles on my 03 and there are some little cracks etc., on my serpentine belt. I figure it might be about time to replace. What does anyone recommend. I have checked the local Pep Boys, Advance but no one carries the belt. Should I just go with a OEM? Hate to pay the dealer price, but have not seen the belt listed on any of sponsors. If anyone knows of a sponsor carrying it please let me know.
Thanks
acehi 02-27-2005, 04:28 PM I just blame it on the kids. I would just throw it away and if/when she notices it missing I would just say the kids broke it and we have to go find another one.

SPICER 02-28-2005, 11:04 AM Started the truck this morning. Cold and damp out. Have a small cricket chirping, but no squeel. Definitely an improvement. I am still interested in finding a Good Year Gatorback or other aftermarket for the future. SPICER

1BADDMAX 04-24-2005, 12:56 PM I just replaced my serpentine belt with a Goodyear Gatorback 4061112 and a new tensioner. I also noticed the grooved idler pulley below the tensioner was bad. I now have no squeak. Shutdown is quiet and smooth.
jugdish35 04-25-2005, 11:44 AM just so everyone knows the correct gatorback part # is 4061182 not 4061112

Single vs. dual alternator...............?
pepperidge 04-25-2005, 01:40 PM Looks somewhat similar to the Goodyear Gatorback belt. Glad to see there's another option now. When my tensioner went bad I switched to the Good year GatorBack belt ...very similair design...
pepperidge 04-25-2005, 01:46 PM just so everyone knows the correct gatorback part # is 4061182 not 4061112
Mines an 01 and "IS" the 4061112. there were two different belt #'s available for my 01 and the 4061112 was the one for mine and many others that switched to GatorBacks during the DiselPage era...
So for some trucks 4061112 "IS" correct. IIRC I think it was Hoot that or Idle Chatter that brought it to everyones attention.
Idle_Chatter 04-25-2005, 10:13 PM Goodyear Gatorback 4061112 Poly-V Serpentine Belt is the correct belt for my single alternator 2001 - there are a couple of belts for single alt designs, depending on the amperage of your alternator. I believe this belt is for the 135 amp alt.
