My bro in law has a 05 CC D/A 3500 250,000 miles. He was traveling at 70/ w the cruise set. Taps the brake to cancel the cruise Hears a POP, but the truck is still running fine, no CEL no codes however now the engine has a miss to it, basically power is still there no codes but running rough, no knocks or bangs coming from inside. A few miles down the road pulls over and notice's oil dripping from the truck, pops the hood and the the engine is covered in oil, after looking closer notices that the dipstick is out approx. 4 inches, he pushes it back in place and proceeds to a car wash, during that time the truck starts smoking a blu ish color and smells like oil. When I got there we put some more oil in it (to load it on the trailer) and I noticed when the truck is running and the dipstick is out it was making a popping noise out of the dip stick hole and oil blow by was shooting out it also did this out of the oil fill hole. Hopefully this is enough info and worded correctly...Thanks Jason.

Sypmtoms of a cracked piston (or one with a hole in it).

The blowby and oil burning are very similar to this:

Sounds like he might have just joined the cracked piston club.

When you get pressure inside the crankcase-- it usually is a bad piston.:o:

I might also add, he has oil pressure, and when the motor is running there is no knock or clanking like a blown motor....does this help any?

Yeah cracked piston. Sorry.

this may be dumb question, but does this mean new motor, or is it fixable?

You may be able to fix it if the cylinder is OK-- remove the head for inspection! Or if you know someone with a bore scope (Long tube with a camera at the end) You could remove the injector and insert it for inspection.:)

also what typically causes this? Programmer to high? Low quality pistons? Or?

Sorry, just happens sometimes. Seems to happen more when running a programmer, but can happen without it if the truck is worked hard alot.:(

Run the codes. You should have a cylinder misfire code. That will be the one. About 50% of the time you can hone the cylinder and replace the piston and rings. The other 50% of the time the block will need bored and oversize pistons will need to be purchased.

What is odd there are no codes, and yes the truck gets worked hard, it spends its life hooked to a 34' trailer. So we'll see its at the dealership in Kc MO

Where at? If no codes then I would vote possibly a blown head gasket.

sounds like mine, cracked piston with a hole, but I did get a code, I spent over $1000 on 1 piston, rings, bearing, head gaskets, 1 injector, its up for sell, I pull a 50 ft. wedge trailer and the engine only has 77000

HiHoSilver why are you selling your truck. And will you be buying another DuraMax.

HOLD ON STOPN THE PRESS. it may be a bad injector and it pushing fuel in to the system and it willl build up the pressure and push up the dip stick. some time s it will smoke out the exsust and some time it will not. or very little. I think that is you problem. you need to get a prog. that can read balance rates of the injectors. let it warm up and then in park read the rates and if over 3 or 4 there bad then put in do drive with foot on the brake and see what the readings are also.

this happened to my brother one time

with the miles you have and the problem with injectors and stilll have power to drive the truck I think this is the problem.

let us know what you find

He replaced his motor, now he's selling the repaired one not the truck.

I think the only way injector pressure could get into the crankcase would be through the piston or rings --- am I right?

ya its so thin and it leaks past the ring my brother s oil level was filling up and blowing oil out the dip tube.
