: I took my muffler off yesterday
nineD5wonton 02-05-2005, 09:30 AM That was the best mod I did so far. I love the new sound. Call me cheap, but I had a driveshaft sitting around at work (new) I cut that sucker up and welded it in place. My exhaust is actually 3" to the muffler, then 3 1/2 from there back. The drive shaft is a thicker pipe, but has a 3 1/2 I.D. So, I made a sleeve out of 3" pipe that I expanded to fit nicely into my driveshaft, and butt-welded that to my tailpipe. I had to heat the front up w/ a torch to "peen" around the smaller pipe. Hey, it worked and the cost was $0! Had to tell ya! I love the sound! Just can't keep out of the "Go pedal" now haha!
quantum mechanic 02-05-2005, 05:59 PM Cool
I bet it sounds great.
CentralFLNative 02-07-2005, 12:10 AM I don't have the resources you do, but I took my truck down to the local exhaust shop. Had them cut the muffler off of the factory exhaust and weld a pipe in place. I could tell a pretty good difference. Must sound great with BIG exhaust.
steiner43511 02-07-2005, 09:12 AM replacing the factories horrible idea of a downpipe makes more of a difference in sound and power than the "Big Exhaust"
Turbine Doc 02-07-2005, 09:30 AM You have a pretty good muffler in the turbo it knocks back 70% of noise I'm guessing, many live with the sound from straight pipe, to get max gain though as others have stated, down pipe has to be dealt with.

CentralFLNative 02-08-2005, 12:43 AM 3" downpipe and 4" exhaust is on the list. Hopefully by summertime. Hacking the muffler was just my $20 solution to boredom.
MrTailLight 02-10-2005, 07:00 PM i just installed the 3" down pipe, and will finish putting the exhaust in this weekend. (painting the truck right now)
i bought the 4" exhaust kit, with the 3" down pipe, and it came with a muffler. i wonder what it would sound like if we installed the muffler backwards so the little parts that catch the sound will not be working? anyone done this?
you can see a good picture of it here:

this is the same exhaust i bought for my burban
nineD5wonton 02-10-2005, 09:59 PM Does that chip add more boost or just fuel? I'm putting gauges in next, but then, I'm not sure if I want to put in a chip or a w/g controler? Any ideas....? I'm new to this diesel thing.... I bought the truck w/ the exhaust (Banks 3.5") and a K&N filter. All I did was put a remote PMD on a cooler w/ a #9 Resistor, and the "driveshaft muffler".... I'll hafta get pics of it. It's more funny looking than anything, hahaha.
MrTailLight 02-10-2005, 11:19 PM i cant answer that yet. all the performance mods i have done to it have been while it is apart getting new paint.
i have yet to install the #9 pin, and finish the exhaust, and finish wiring up the gauges.
just by installing the chip, and moving the rig around the shop, it seems alot more "mean" you can say, and sounds BAD ASS with the open pipe under the passengers seat ;)
ill have to let you know next week how it performs vs stock. it goes to GM monday morning to get the injector pump calibrated withthe exhaust and chip, and #9 pin mods. ill try to get pics up as well.
nineD5wonton 02-12-2005, 03:01 PM Sounds good, can't wait. Thanks for the reply
Silvy 02-12-2005, 04:59 PM I too am curious about your chip MrTailLight. What type of chip is it. I'm looking to get one quite soon (Heath 2.0 chip). My exhaust is done and its awesome but damn, this mod stuff is addicting):h
CanadianRigger 02-12-2005, 05:02 PM very addicting...
MrTailLight 02-13-2005, 02:22 AM i got the chip from Ryan, and i found him through ebay:

just last night we got all the graphics on the truck, and tonight we installed all the gauges and remote PMD along with the #9 pin
we fired it up and i noticed it did not smoke as much? maybe we moved the pump and advanced the timing a bit?
tomorrow i will drive it over a block and finish the exhaust up, i will know more about the performance end of it then.
i cant wait to get this ride done, i am leaving for florida wed afternoon with this truck, and i still have all the interior to put in, install the barn doors, and touch up the jambs, put the grill and filler and lights and hood back on, and so forth!
nineD5wonton 03-06-2005, 09:13 AM I finally have a few pics of my truck, including one of my "driveshaft muffler" I'll be taking more as my mods go on. My gauges just came in, Autometer cobalts. They are sexy. Is there a place in the manifold where I can pull a plug to put the EGT sensor? where do most of you have your sensor? I think it'll be a pain to pull the manifold after 10 years and almost 200k miles. What do you think?
quantum mechanic 03-06-2005, 09:27 AM There's a raised boss on either side of the left exhaust manifold(one toward the engine and one toward the tire. It can be tapped on the vehicle, or off depending on your preference.
Let's hear some feedback on the 80 hp chip. I'd like to acquire it as well, and diesel ryan live two town's east of me, and I'd like to meet him.
nineD5wonton 03-06-2005, 12:35 PM so, it just needs tapped, not drilled?
4DAMAX 03-20-2005, 04:56 PM Just wanted to tell you that those who have drilled & tapped have done it with thr truck running to blow the chips out. Just my .02
nineD5wonton 03-20-2005, 09:57 PM I have installed my sensor into my downpipe. There was a threaded bung in the banks exhaust kit, worked great. May not be the perfect ticket, but if I choose to move it down the road, I can put a plug in that bung, and place it where I want. I just wanted to get the truck on the road, and ran out of time. Thanks for all of the info!
