: Edge or Predator or both
bowties_rule 04-07-2008, 07:45 PM Hows it going guys,
I put in the attitude with juice today, wow what a difference. And the predator should be here tomarrow, so that I can adjust for my tire size and speed limiter.
I was talking to a guy that is going to Rhino line my rockers, and he said that he (Jason) is running both the Bully Dog, and the edge on top of it. What does that mean exactly? I didnt know you could run both the tuner and programmer, is there any benifit?
Jason also added that he is runing them both maxed out and has had no problems with his tranny limping, plus getting 22 MPG. Sounds a little fishy to me. The only problem he said that he had was, when he was going up a pass and flogging it, that some alarms went going off. And that he could not slow it down below 80. When he hit the brakes it would just smoke em. I guess after weaving thru traffic for 10 miles, it returned to normal.
So that is why I came to the Big Dogs here, to find out what the scoop is.
Thanks
Unit453 04-07-2008, 08:09 PM 22 is not too far out of reach. Some guys claim to get that bone stock. I know I can get 22 at highway speeds with my Predator on 85.
Now, "stacking" tunes is quite common. Some programmers stack better than others. Some produce incredible power. The limit for a stock tranny is around 80-90 h.p. above stock before damage occurs. It is generally not advisable to run the higher tunes on a stock trans. Its your truck, obviously, and you're gonna do what you want but if you value what you've got, you'll keep it the Edge at level 3 or less or run the Predator at the 85 tune or less. Most people here go by the words of 'You wanna play, you're gonna pay.'
Flogging it at highway speeds is the worst thing you can do for the trans. Also, with the higher tunes, it may throw "fuel starvation" codes, basically meaning that the stock fuel pump simply cant keep up with the added fuel flow rates that some of these hot tunes are demanding. To be safe, use one or the other. You can use the Predator to adjust the speedo and odometer, which is what I think you're planning on doing anyways. Lots of people think that Edge will recalibrate your speedo. You're 1 up on them in knowing that it wont. All it does is intercept the signal downwind of the computer vs a programmer completely retuning the ECM.
bowties_rule 04-07-2008, 11:42 PM Thanks for the info,
Will I be able to do the adjusting with the predator while the Edge is hooked up, or will I need to return it back to factory type setup?
Unit453 04-07-2008, 11:44 PM You'll be fine. They're two totally different tuning devices that do different things so there shouldnt be a problem.
bowties_rule 04-08-2008, 11:53 PM I had to unplug the Edge, cause the Predator wouldnt do anything when it was on. The first time, the engine light came on with a couple of codes, and "service brake sytem" came on.
I talked to Jason, and he said that alot programmers are doing this when you enter more than 34.75" for tire size. So I re-loaded everything to 34.5" tire. Nothing came up as far as codes, or engine light.
About 5 miles later the "service brake system" came on again, along with the ABS light, and the emergency brake light. So is there some confliction going on that would bring all this on?
Another question is when I am driving, I guess 65 MPH, my EGT alarm is constantly going off and I have it set for 1250. Should there be some concern with that. No idea what it was doing before I drilled and taped the hole in the exhaust for the probe.

bowties_rule 04-09-2008, 12:01 AM One other thing I was talking with Jason, and he figures he is running around 700 HP, with his piggy back setup (Bully Dog and Edge) Cold Air, & cat and muffler delete. Zero problems with the tranny.
How much does elevetion factor into all this. We live about a 5000 elev. I also talked with a friend that is the service manager for the local GMC dealership and they have only seen one truck for tranny problems related to tuners. Saying there is a ****load hoped up diesels here, is underestimating it big time.
Unit453 04-09-2008, 12:03 AM Some guys have problems with the ABS sensor's going crazy...I really dont know since I'm only running a leveling kit with 33's. There are LOTs of members here who have lifted trucks and I'm surprised no one has chimed in yet.
Is your EGT alarm going off because its running at 1250? 1250 is hot but the redline for our turbo's is supposedly around 1375 sustained temp. Many people have seen 1700, even 1900 degree temps for short amounts of time. Your truck shouldnt be running at 1250 degrees unless you're into the throttle or you're pulling a load. It should be between 700-900 on level ground with a stock, cat back or full 4" exhaust with no cat at highway speeds.
bowties_rule 04-09-2008, 12:42 AM Everything is stock, other than the tuner(s), the lift and tires. The alarm was staying on for about 15 seconds, until I lowered my speed. I was running on (#1) on the Edge.
A full exhaust is in the works thou,
Unit453 04-09-2008, 12:46 AM There's no logical reason why your truck is running at 1250 at highway speeds....Unless you're running at 130 mph...Or pulling a load. Your probe could be faulty.
bowties_rule 04-09-2008, 12:59 AM I guess I should make some EGT mechanical gauge be in the works as well huh? hmmm
Well thats whats strange, around town its up and down from 400 to 600. As soon as I get on the highway, its around a 1000. And the only load was the weight of the truck.
Is there another way of testing the probe?
Unit453 04-09-2008, 01:23 AM Not really. Running at 1000 degrees does seem a bit high for an unloaded weight for normal highway speeds. But like I said, unless you're running at 90 plus, it shouldnt be that hot.
bowties_rule 04-10-2008, 11:55 PM I took the predator thing off, and all my problems have disappeared. EGT's are 6 to 700 on the highway, "service brake system" is gone and no engine light.
I guess Predator is not compatible with edge. Any ideas???
