: A Few Questions with the Predator
Akrapovic750 02-03-2005, 09:53 PM I installed my Predator tonight on the 65HP setting and could feel the extra power. But the shifting isnt smooth. Now I know the Allison has to relearn when to shift with the new power but it was like when it shifted it was still giving it fuel. I use to have the Edge but took it off, I know the Edge had the defueling option. Does the Predator have anything like this?? And the Predator also doesnt have anything like the Egde does to keep the power off til the motor is warm right. All info about this and how you are liking your Predator is appreciated!!
McRat 02-03-2005, 10:13 PM No defuel options on the Predator. Drive the truck hard for awhile to let the trans adjust to the HP. Even a 65hp tune is about 30% more power.
KTDURAMAX 02-04-2005, 03:27 PM Just did mine too.........
What's this crap all about pulling fuses and loosing the radio time????????
I like my edge still.
Also noticed that max boost with preditor only is 25 psi. (juice unplugged)
With juice plugged in... level 0 or above I get 31 psi (pillar gauges)
NCMIC 02-04-2005, 04:38 PM unless you have on star, you really shouldn't have to pull fuses. I had mine work just fine. Just make sure all accessories are turned off and doors are closed.
arcticman 02-04-2005, 08:55 PM My tranny is still learning 4 days later , but alot better now.I was wondering why it seems most people with the predator are running it on the 65 tune mostly? I set mine right at 85 and let her smoke, no tranny mods yet, but got intake and kittyless 4 inch exhauts, and i dont tow because they 65 tune is max. I also have full gauges.
whityinfl 02-04-2005, 09:56 PM Artic...what type of EGTs are you seeing? I am running the 85 as well but I don't have the guages. My truck doesn't see much heavy use so I am not to concerned. The only time I could see it getting really warm is on the Hwy. I usually cruise about 75 with some bursts up to 85. With that scenario are the EGT's high?
lly101 02-04-2005, 11:05 PM Don't pull trailer with predator at 100 setting way to hot. Not really worth it. just my 2cents
arcticman 02-04-2005, 11:57 PM Whit... I have yet to get it out on the highway , but short full throttle burts dont seem to go much higher than 800 to 900, Ill take it out this weekend and see then post them, but im sure someone on here knows as well. I think im gonna have to try the 100 tune saterday, I just cant get enough now!
lly101 02-05-2005, 12:40 AM Pulling 17,000 I might add. I actually like the predator except for the heat but the lly is hot to start with. Haven't tried the lower settings yet.
LanduytG 02-05-2005, 06:39 AM I just put the Predator 65hp tune in last week. Took the Ally about a day to adjust. But I don't like how it shifts at all. It feels like its defueling and shifts seem a little slow. But I love the extra power. I pulled the tune yesterday because I am going to take into the dealer for the reflash and a couple of other things and boy is stock a dog.

RickDLance 02-05-2005, 09:53 AM I don't pull the fuses either, but I do make sure everything is turned off before I start.
leftmy8.1 02-05-2005, 10:31 AM installed mine yesterday at lunch "could not wait". Shifting was bad all the way back to work. Went on the net and found the down shift trick.Basically get up to 55 or top gear and down shift to 1st. The computer will then shift down through the gears as the speed drops. After getting into first pull over, put break on, turn off and do again three times. I saw this on serveral different posts and is also on the diablo FAQ. I think its sets the upward bounds numbers in the trani. After this it seems to shift fine. At this point its best to drive it like you stole it to help the trani fine tune quicker.
BarryD 02-05-2005, 01:19 PM Leftmy8.1 that procedure has been discussed and is not a good thing to do. Also "drive it like you stole it" probably isn't good advise also. Shouldn't the person drive it the way they always drive. This would facilitate the tranny learning faster. Unless of course that is their driving style. :)

Whats wrong with doing this? The computer controls the trans and will not let it shift untill its time. My son-in-law works for Allison here in Indy and they do this all the time. They will go out and run 60-70 mph and through it it reverse to see what happens. If it goes then its back to the programimg and looking at the hardware to see way it happen. Won't bother me to do it.

leftmy8.1 02-06-2005, 10:58 AM Just because the allison has a learning computer does not mean it has neural networks, artificial intelligence and is named HAL. It just tries to optimize the shifting based on the type of driving you do. The down shift trick just lets the trani see some high torque numbers so it can build a new curve without having the throttle wide open. Seems the people with slow learners are the people who are trying to baby the alli. Worked for me, mine was shifting smooth after 5 miniutes of engine time from preditor install on 65 hp.
leftmy8.1 02-06-2005, 11:07 AM BArryD here's the info from diablo. After I first drove my truck and felt the bad shifting, went to the diablo site and read this went out and tried it. Pretty simple.
Found from searching FAQ with allison.
"The Predator for Duramax truck has no transmission function in it at all. No manufacturers can communicate directly with the Allison transmission. It is a self-learning system, the trick is to drive it, and it will adjust to the power level your using in time. The more you change around the power level the longer you drag it out, the higher power levels will adapt for the lower ones, and the harder you drive it the faster it will adapt. Now there is also kind of a trick you can play on the system that helps speed up the process. Take the truck out on an open piece of road, allow it to shift all the way up to high gear at cruise, then release the throttle and shift the truck down into low gear, not to worry it will not jerk down into low gear, foot off the throttle allow the vehicle to shift down through the gear progression until your riding along in low, apply brake, put the truck in Park, and do it again. After two or three times, generally, you will see improvements right away, Allison has learned.
Or just keep driving and it will improve on its own, just know your going to have to wait it out. Again this is the case for every manufacturer adding horsepower to the GM Duramax trucks."
roguedriver 02-06-2005, 02:30 PM Whit, I just got back from Phoenix last week and ran the 85hp tune the whole trip unloaded. My EGT's were usually in the 700 to 900 range cruising at about 85mph. Thats with the EGT probe pre-turbo in the passenger manifold and 4" exhaust also. You should be fine with the 85 cruising around, but full throttle 1/4 mile runs will start pushing the 1200 to 1300 range on 85hp.
