I am ready to begin rebuilding my nv4500. There is a nut on the output shaft that is like a perfect circle with 4 notches in it that sits inside of a balancer. Where does a guy obtain the specail socket needed to remove this nut?

I am sure there are plenty of other sources but look at

quad4x4 dot com

NV4500 dot com (hadn't been there is a long while)

and maybe pirate4x4 dot com for other leads.

Let me rephrase, where can a guy get this cheaply, I didn't consider $120 an affordable option for 1 stupid socket

Well, I THINK they are called spanner sockets or spanner wrenches. Or maybe someone else can say.

I don't know how they are sized pitch, diameter, and depth. I have not been inside the trans case so don't know specifics.

You can look up OTC tool company on google or other specialty tool company. The webpages I posted are just distributors.

I don't know if I can direct link (I don't think any vendors compete for this tooling)

I got mine from the Mac Tools truck (special order). It's been quite a few years, but I paid through the nose for them. I got the socket for the big nut and a couple of others I needed. You won't likely get that nut off with anything other than that socket. It's on with something like 300 ft-lbs of torque. You might try watching for one on Fleabay.

I never did get around to rebuilding the thing, and now, with NVG gone, there seems to be a shortage of parts for it.

Where did you find synchro rings?

I got a rebuild kit on ebay for about $180 that came with synchros.

I bought a socket last night at Oreilly's for 4x4 service that I may be able to modify to work, for $14 its worth a shot.

OK guys, the tool worked I guess LOL. I had to take the socket and cut it in half add in a spacer from 2" steel pipe and weld it back together. The important part is that the nut came off and I didn't damage anything in the process. If I get a chance I will take a pic of the bastardized socket and post it, my welds didn't look very good but I guess thats what happenes when you hurry. But hey I got $20 into this, much better than $120
