: Turbo bark with predator 65hp
mick14 02-03-2005, 10:24 AM I have had the edge since my truck since I received my truck in early november. When using the ***/juice at lvl 3 or above i had significant turbo bark. I quit using the edge and installed the predator tune when it got cold due to the edge quit working. The last couple of days with the predator at wfo I get at least two successive barks after the 3-4 shift. Is anyone else having this problem with the predator? Can it be stopped? Is it common to have it bark more than once in a row or is it something other than a bark? Thanks guys. Mick
McRat 02-03-2005, 10:41 AM Has the transmission had any time to learn?
The only tuner I've tested that had a significant bark issue after learning has been the Edge.
Enigma 02-03-2005, 10:59 AM Ran my Predator on the 65 HP tune for several weeks, never noticed any turbo bark. However can't say I did a lot of WOT runs though, weather's been too cold. Ran it a bit down in Vegas (with stock exhaust) nice long strips, lotsa rice burners out at night pissed a few of em off... and admittedly got burned by a few of the really hoped up ones still didn't bark the turbo on the 65HP setting though.
Haven't tried any runs with my 4" exhaust, and you've also got an intake mod I'm not running. I don't know if an exhaust mod (or intake) could cause a turbo bark, but it’s certainly plausible that with less back pressure the turbo being able to work easier could over boost the intake manifold causing a bark.
cowdoc 02-03-2005, 12:44 PM Excuse me for my ignorance as I am new to the "Performance Diesel" world :iamwithst , but what exactly is turbo bark. I have just recieved my predator and I plan on using the 65 hp tune. I just want to know what to look (listen) for.
Thanks

I have the same question i think i did this 2 days ago. I had a sound that could only have been described as a bark. I was running stock at 30 mile an hour and headed to 40 mph. If it was not that then my truck is making a barking sound a few times when it is cold.
mick14 02-03-2005, 12:57 PM cowdoc, if what I am experiencing is turbo bark, you will not have to strain to hear it. It is not really loud, but very noticable. You can also feel it as it definately quits accelerating when it does this. Mick
Robgmcman 02-03-2005, 01:03 PM What is going on when a trubo barks?
McRat 02-03-2005, 02:58 PM When the post turbo intake air is pressured, it can go in two directions: it can go into the engine, or it can try to go back through the turbo. What stops it from going back out the turbo? The intake impeller is normally spinning due to exhaust pressure on the turbine side. But when the exhaust has no pressure, the post turbo intake air that is pressurized can try to spin the impeller backwards to release the pressure. This is where the bark comes from.
dmaxfan 02-03-2005, 03:06 PM It sounds like Curly, woop woop woop.
mick14 02-03-2005, 03:20 PM McRat, have you had this problem with the Predator? Does anyone know what can be done to prevent it????? Should I talk to Diablo? It sucks not being able to keep it wfo because of the bark. It has also has to be damn hard on the turbo. Mick
McRat 02-03-2005, 03:30 PM It didn't do it on my truck.
However, I have only run level 3 and 5, have a built trans, and I don't have a cat.
I would suggest doing some simulated 1/4mi passes and see if the trans learning stops it.
mick14 02-03-2005, 03:54 PM I am sure my trans has relearned by now. I have had it on for about 3 1/2 weeks. Is it possible that it hasn't learned the 3-4 full throttle shift because it hasn't been done very much? thanks for your help Mcrat. Mick
lakingslayer 02-03-2005, 04:29 PM Here is what it sounds like.

There is another one with a truck on a dyno that is good but I cannot find it.

That would be my guess. If it doesn't get better after a half dozen WOT runs, there might be something else affecting it.
95geo 02-03-2005, 05:33 PM i almost cured the turbo bark with the edge by unplugging the egr, only rarely would it bark after that and you had to be on level 5 wfo to do it, never barked with the predator stacked with edge and tonight im loading the predator without the edge so i can see how just the predator acts alone

I am getting this at least once everytime i drive somewere. I am running stock. I am on the gas sometimes hard and sometimes not when it does it. I think it is the turbo barking.
Description
Just today i am getting on the freeway i have the peddle down not all the way but hard and after 4th gear it gives me a woop woop and it feels like the engine has cut out and power is gone for a short time. If this is what is happening why would that happen at stock settings? Please help me if you know. I do have the 05 lly 7000 miles and the banks 6 gun installed with speedloader, but it is always set on stock intel i find out what is wrong.

Remove the harness completely and test it.
Many harness boxes still modify the engine commands even at 0 setting.
My Edge would occassionally bark at 0.
gelecon 02-03-2005, 07:57 PM My truck did this sometimes around town even at 63,000. I did not hear the whoop but felt the truck almost die out and come back to life when shifting around a corner..I was always wondering if the tranny module was ever going to learn the situation and it never did.
Turbo6600 02-03-2005, 10:17 PM I just installed a Superchip LLY 125HP No Turbo BArk Or any problem :ro) Then Tonight on my 05 I put a Bullydog dyno dominator w/outlook monitor 140Hp This thing has a few issues but no Bark . My predator on 85 Hp no bark either seems like every LLY is different :( Don't understand  Turbo 6600:grd: gelecon You had an LB7 engine in your 02 Not an LLY 04.5-05:ro)
LanduytG 02-04-2005, 06:02 AM Turbo bark is when the air on the down stream side of the turbo can no longer be compressed, also called surge. The sound you here is the air colapsing. Not a good thing to do because it can cause a lot of damage like bearing or a broken turbine shaft. Every turbine has a surge limit and mst manufacture put just enough turbo on for stock use and not much more. This is way after market turbos are made so you can get more air at a higher pressure.

Cummin_Stroke_this_Dmax 02-04-2005, 06:23 PM I've run on all levels of the Predator and only had turbo bark once. I was holding the brake and go peddle at the same time (brake stand - little one just to let my friend know I was there) and let off the fuel and woop woop woop. Normal driving I've never heard it bark on any shifts, any level, any throttle position.
