: diesel leak dripping off of starter
mordac 04-01-2008, 09:11 PM I have a 1994 suburban 6.5 w 139k miles. It has a fuel leak passenger side rear that is eventually dripping from the starter. Is a slow drip but leaks even when not running. Engine cranks and runs great. Dont see any dripping while running but there is alot of air blowing in there..once the engine is stopped, the leak is much worse..say 10 - 15 drops for a few minutes..then returns to the steady drip about one drop every minute.
there is so much on that side of the engine, turbo, air cleaner etc I cant see the leak origination. I am guessing from reading here that it could be a return line rubber hose on an injector, or the two fuel lines around the filter etc..
Help. Whats should I look for, and where is the fuel filter FM100 as I read it on 93+ models? How much has to come off to see the injectors / lines etc on that side of a 4x4 2500 burb? and changing the fuel lines...whats involved?
cjwilliams72 04-01-2008, 09:23 PM I had to change my injection lines. I had to pull the intake off, It wasn't as bad as i thought,, You could definitely tell that it was coming from them cause it was spraying out while running and would stop when truck was off... Personally i would check the return lines,
I could be wrong but i think if you were to pull the passenger side tire off and carefully remove the dust shield on the fender well you can see the lines from there.... Good luck and be careful I'm sure you know a leak in the fuel system is very dangerous
mordac 04-01-2008, 09:37 PM Thanks will try that next..didnt think about removing tire..seems a good idea...you css from under the car or above.

North Maine 04-01-2008, 09:54 PM Try removing your air box and fender well, ( it really is pretty easy, i did it out in the parking lot of my school) to give you a much better view of where it is coming from. its probly not from the filter, as that would run down the engine valley, its more likely to be an injector, injector line, or return line leak.
mordac 04-01-2008, 10:28 PM Where do you get replacement rubber fuel lines, return lines, etc once I can get at the source of the leak..whcih seems to be injector, fuel lines, return lines...specs and such?
docsgmc 04-02-2008, 01:29 PM i have the 97 6.5......i was having no problems but my friend wanted to see the motor....he said there was a strong smell of diesel and it looked a litle wet on the pasengers side rear of the motor...everything els looked good.....i may have the same pronlem as mordac.....now you have me thinking......let me know more on this brother
BNTune 04-02-2008, 01:51 PM Where do you get replacement rubber fuel lines, return lines, etc once I can get at the source of the leak..whcih seems to be injector, fuel lines, return lines...specs and such?
Use the push on return lines that does away with the clamps. Now on the #8&7 injector, it uses a cap that needs clamped on. This cap/#8 could be a issue on your truck.
vail426 04-02-2008, 03:10 PM I had the same situation--dripping from starter. The "O" rings in the fuel filter housing were leaking. I pulled out the housing and replaced the "O" rings and fuel hoses while I was there.
mordac 04-02-2008, 06:11 PM Leak is actually dripping from the weep hole in the bell housing. How hard is it to get to the filter? You have to take off the intake manifold etc? If so who at GM was on acid that day it was designed?
Steady drip when engine running, slows but still drips after engine cut off...no matter how long.
mordac 04-02-2008, 06:52 PM UPDATE! found leak..bottom of fuel filter. How in the heck do you get to the bottom? will the whole assembly move up ie enough hose is there...to where I can remove and get to the bottom or does the air intake manifold have to come off?:D
mordac 04-02-2008, 07:37 PM major progress. Removed the cover, to get to the filter. Saw the leak, bottom of assembly..Hoses were ok, so I pulled the lines off, took the filter assembly off, and sure enough the heater was both loose and the o-ring shot.
so hoses look pretty new..I am going to replace the o-ring, clean bowl, renew filter and put her back together..losing the light tho so brew time. What do I have to do to bleed the line once she is all back together? Does it help to fill bowl with fuel before cart so that it has some fuel in the bowl..or ljust keep cranking in short intervals till she primes?
North Maine 04-02-2008, 08:23 PM you can open up the bleeder valve on top, and run the LP to refill the filter
mordac 04-02-2008, 09:47 PM got it. I also have a parmacool filter / water sep that since I have the thing out of the truck..I will plumb into the fuel feed. I think I will put a barb filling on the input hose 3/8 as ID as I understand it, route to the permacool filter/water sep and then back to the original filter.
I went to Non-Advance auto .. dont think the kid knew what letter o-ring started with much less got the the proper for the fuel heater. Then off to O'Really and same thing..I suppose I should have been impressed that they even had the fuel filter. :(
So where to get the fuel heater o-ring?
mordac 04-05-2008, 08:24 PM resolution...was leaking at the fuel heater o-ring. Only source was the dealer .. about $4. Once all put togther still was leaking heavily..so..I decided to extend the 1/4 hoses so I could actually see what was going on.. The fuel heater was not the problem any more...nope a defective fuel filter ..had a crimped seal ... allowing fuel to leak from the surface mating the filter to housing.
Also, since all the filters are the same..from Standyne..O'Rielly as $26 and the source of the defective filter..Advance was $13.
So I plumbed in a Permacool filter/water sep ahead of the standard filter, and extended the 1/4 lines so if I have to get at the original filter I can. I think tho the engineering sux..the 1/4 hoses under air intake, fuel filter at back, very hard to R&R much less see whats going on..oh well...
I thoroughly cleaned to bowl, the housing, and mating suirfaces..used Rotella to lube the o-ring for the heater element (seemed to be needed, I couldnt get a good seal otherwise),,and also to lube the fuel filter gasket attached to the element..
Put it all back in the truck for the 2nd time..and success. All the excess fuel was leaking from the weep hole GM provided in the bellhousing..when they realized any leak would end up there.. :-(
William Hall 04-06-2008, 11:06 AM NICE, I had the same thing..Come to find out, I installed the the upper O-ring upsidedown! Now I know why I have 2 trucks! I can always look to the other one when I make a mistake.....
