I got my new 2008 GMC 3500 EXt Cab Dually SLT on Friday did the D3 install Saturday and Sunday. Here are a few pictures. I have Onstar and Bose along with the BT200 and iPod adapter plus a color backup camera for my 5th wheel RV. AWESOME SOUND! :D

At least the rats 'll have a place to nest later. I've been installing radios for 20yrs and it still amazes me as to how many wires and modules it takes to do these late model installs. Congrats on getting it all together. It looks great.
As for sound, is it the stock bose/lux amps and speakers?

It is what GMC calls their premium sound system with the Bose in an SLT package. All I know is that it sounds a lot better with the D3 than the original stereo and 6 disc CD changer that came with the SLT package.:D

Looks great.

Some questions for you if thats OK?

What did you do to get the steering wheel controls to work?
Did the ariel for the Sat Nav plug straight into the D3?
Which fasci kit did you utilise?
Was there any problems encountered allong the way and how long did it take you?

Cheers

That's always my first response when someone says they wanna improve their horribly sounding BLose system.

Install looks awesome! Congrats.

For the steering wheel controls, Peripheral makes an interface to use with the D3 and the NNBS trucks. Click here for more info (http://www.peripheralelectronics.com/products.aspx?ProductID=210)

1. For the steering wheel controls I used the SWI-PS from PAC.

2. The D3 has it's own GPS ariel and you need an adapter for the radio antenna. I did not hook up XM..I didn't want it.

3. The Fasci kit came from Crutchfield (Scosche)

4. I work slow so I spent most of two days putting it all together. I do have one prblem and that is when the engine is running and I then shut it off the volume on the radio goes up to max. If the engine is not running then it shuts down normal. I believe it has to do with the PAC SWI-PS and how I have it powered. but not sure?

1. For the steering wheel controls I used the SWI-PS from PAC. Can get one of those, but there are others available?

2. The D3 has it's own GPS ariel and you need an adapter for the radio antenna. I did not hook up XM..I didn't want it. But can the GMC ariel slot straight in , ie; is it a standard type plug, or do you have to use the Pioneer one?

3. The Fasci kit came from Crutchfield (Scosche) On order!

4. I work slow so I spent most of two days putting it all together. I do have one prblem and that is when the engine is running and I then shut it off the volume on the radio goes up to max. Could it be a programming fault from the original install?

Thanks again

I got the D3 working correctly now. I had to move the ACC feed wire from where I had it to the one connected to the D3 because of RAP. Works great now.

and can you listen to a CD while the navigation is on?

1. not sure
2. back up camera does not come with it
3. yes, you have to put the nav disk in first, and once your route is plotted it will run in memory to that location while you do whatever else

I purchased a color backup camera, it did not come with the original order.

The D3 has spare audio/video input wires so I believe you could use them for any audio/video you wanted. I am going to wire mine to a location where I can plug what i want into them. Like digital camera, camcorder, other dvd player etc.

If you want to have more then one CD slot then add a disc changer or use an iPod. The D3 also has a front input that uses the 3.5mm plug so you can plug whatever audio/video into that.

I purchased the package from Crutchfield. (AVIC-D3X) this came with the BT200, iPod adapter cable and remote control. Tthey also supplied all the additional moduls for my vehicle and some very good install instructions plus you get lifetime support for FREE!

Looks great. I have the D3 in both of my trucks. I sat in the driveway one evening in my LB7 watching a movie while my friend was in the LLY next to me installing that D3. I did it for the DVD and Ipod features. I wanted to stop using cd's. I also have the steering wheel control box in both trucks since I'm not a fan of remotes.

Hopefully you enjoy yours as much as I have mine.

Mine was pretty easy to do, the toughest part for me was to find a clean way to keep the rat's nest behind it. After I finished the install, I was glad that I didn't pay someone else to do it!

I don't have onstar or Bose, so I don't know if that changes what needs to be done.

zach45, also it would be easier if you filled out your sig. so everyone knew more about your truck and thus easier to give info on it.

question, in regards to hooking up the back up camera. On the new body style trucks, where do you tap into the reverse wire?

Scarface
04-19-2008, 12:11 PM
I didn't tap into the reverse wire instead I tapped into the fuse box under the hood to an ACC circuit that way I can see my rear view anytime I want. I ran the wire from the fuse box along side the emergency brake cable and into the cab. My camera is on my 5th wheel RV so I need it when towing. But if you want to have it hooked up to your reverse wire so that it only works while backing up locate the wire coming down the steering column or the reverse wire in the 7 way plug for your backup lights.

Did you guys look into the Z2 when you bought the D3? Wondering if it is a better choice ? On either model does the radio station info (Song, title, Artist, station info come up the screen?

Scarface
04-21-2008, 10:19 AM
I looked at the Z2 but it was out of my budget. The song, title, artist does not come up on the D3 from a radio station to my knowledge. The Station ID comes up. If an ipod is attached it will show artist and such. When I put a CD in with all my MP3 songs it shows song, title, artist etc.
So far I have been very happy with the D3 but I'm still learning all that it can do and how best to use it.

choose mode 2 on the SWI-PS instead of the mode 1 and relearn the functions. I just went thru the same thing, called peripherial and that was the fix...

What cameras did you guys use? I noticed there are a bunch of them out there now. If mounted on the licence plate do the licence plate lights screw up the light needed to see at night?

I have my license plate camera in the box ready to install, just have not gotten around to it yet. I will post how it looks as soon as I get it on.

The Z2s had some serious hard drive problems. You can buy a D3 and an ipod cheaper and have the same thing. The hard drive only allows you to store less than 10G because the nav takes up so much of it. Not worth the money at all.

Should be a green wire at the BCM, but not sure.

The D3 has a dedicated circuit for the reverse wire. The camera has ignition/power on it, and that's how to hook it up. The reverse wire on the D3 goes to the reverse wire on the truck to make the radio switch to the camera in reverse. You can also switch the camera to stay on by buttons on the radio. No extra switch or different power is needed if you hook it up like they call for.

the only thing i see is better is the dual zone on the z2

I've had both the z's, 2 of the d's, and a couple of the N series units. I use only the D3 in my truck and my company vehicles now. The z-2 has a little better nav over all of the rest but overall the d-3 works alot smoother me. Putting mp3's on the hard drive was kinda a pain too, much easier to use an ipod with the d-3.

Also, I put cheap waterproof/color/night vision cameras on all the vehicles. They have all lasted forever and I like where I install them, check my garage and look at the plate.

Frigndope, what camera brand and models do you use . I used one POS that now has water behind the lens. VT cold temps and road salt tends to kill everything. I'd like a decent low lux (below 1) color CCD that lasts

Also, what TV tuner and antenna did you use? I still would like to have the news on the way to work.

I will get the model number for you guys on the camera. I was using the same Tv Unit as we had on the N-2, I think it was P6400 if I remember right, with the stock pioneer antennas. I didnt put this into this truck. I never really used it, reception always sucked except for channel 7 and 9, and I got sick of the antenna clips on the windows. If I watch anything now, it is a dvd or something off the ipod.

Cool, I think that has been the general consensus on the TV antennas.

Thanks for the info, if you get a chance, can you post a pic of your camera install?

Thanks again.

Fitted mine today.

Talk about easy.

The only issue I had was the trimming of the rear cage to facilitate the flush fitting of the AVIC.

Save some money, have some fun and do it yourself.

Good luck.

avic411.com was a great help.
