This past weekend the water pump started leaking. Didnt notice it until a friend made the comment "all these diesels smell like antifreeze". I joked and said maybe I have a leak. Damn, wouldnt you know it there was a puddle under the truck when we looked.
He's a "retired" mechanic and he had some stop leak tablets that the GM dealership uses. We put 2 in the reservoir and it stopped the leak.
I took it to the dealer and after a pressure test they said there was no leak to be found and everything looked good. I did tell them about the stop leak tablets. They have the pressure test going over night to see if anything happens.

Now finally my question...has anyone used these stop leak tablets for a water pump problem and how long did the pump last before it finally gave way again.

never used stop leak.

i didnt have enough time to fix mine when it went, drove it for about 2 weeks with the coolant tank lid unscrewed. ran fine that way, never got hot and it stopped the pump from leaking till i could get it fixed.

Just got my truck back from the dealer. They did verify leak with an over night pressure test but they said it was very slight. (couple drips)
They want $1050.00 to replace the water pump. My aftermarket warranty covers only $500.00 of the cost.
I guess the stop leak tablets work pretty good as a temporary fix. Eventually I'll replace it in the coming month.

definately. only takes 4-6 hours for someone with a general knowledge of what goes where :HiHi: parts might run you a quarter of that... save you the rest in labor, buy some beer.

Typically the water pumps leak from the weap hole on the bottom side of the water pump. Some leaks can be slowed by loosening the pressure cap. Once it starts leaking, you are on borrowed time. If the seal lets go completely, you will be sitting on the side of the road stuck. 1050.00 is pretty steep for labor, but I guess I am out of touch, or my wife still owes me 1049.00 for changing hers:p:

That stop-leak that you put in is coating the hot spots in you engine and plugging your heater core and will plug up your radiator. PLAY SAFE!

Go look in the DIY section at my water pump replacement thread. If I can do it, you can.

If you dont want to tackle it, I'll do it for $1050! That would buy some more perf parts for me!

Mine has been leaking for over a year now, and like whitetrash, I have my cap loose.
I have the pump in hand, and will tackle it someday soon, just have to find the time. I have changed one already, so I have been down this road, should take only like 4 hours at most, but now I have gone and jinxed myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never heard of the tablets, but I had a Ford once, and it was pissing out the radiator at the fan about the size of pencil lead, and stop leak hooked that one right up, that stuff is amazing! if it stopped that leak, I bet it is stopping more up on the inside.

I too am a member of the loose cap club. Been over 6 months since mine started leaking. I have to add about a quart every 1500 miles. I have a pump and can install it any time I want. Just don't have the will power to quit!!!

Just got back from vacation today so the truck sat since Monday. The loose cap I'll definitely will do seeing I have to do a lot of driving this coming week.
I think me and my buddy are going to change it. Just need to make it for 2 more weeks.
Thanks for the replies and info.

i made it for that long on mine without a problem. some members on here say they've been running that way for the better part of year with no problems. i think tolliwacker is one of them.

Yep, been over a year, and 10 thousand miles, but I am expecting myself to change it maybe next week, but I will have to see if I am scheduled for anything.....:D
