: Help on Changing the Intake Manifold
ssorange 02-02-2005, 04:56 PM Hi,
I’m changing the upper intake manifold gasket on my ’94TD. Was wondering a few things:
1)Any special gasket I should use (ie. FelPro ect.)
2)Should go all the way and remove the lower for any reason?
3)Should I move the PDM while I’ve got it apart?
4)Any special tricks/pitfalls that I should be aware of?
Thanks for your time,

bowtie65 02-02-2005, 06:40 PM pretty basic, and i would keep it that way. i did mine last summer and remote mounted my pmd by the rad where lots of cool air could get to it. you could spend big money on a pmd cooler but if you have an electronics store nearby you could get a heatsink fairly cheap and do it yourself. as far as the gaskets go i got mine from the gm stealer in stock and about $26.00us if not mistaken. dont open up the bottom unless you have to, you could give yourself headaches. just be prepared to spend most of the weekend tearing apart and putting back together. ps it is always a good idea to clean all parts real good before assembly, never know when you will be wrenching on it again. good luck!

ssorange 02-02-2005, 06:57 PM hey bowtie:
Thanks for the info!
What did you use for a cable to move the PDM? Did you make it or buy it? If so where?
bowtie65 02-02-2005, 07:15 PM went to electrical supply house and bought a 3 pair 18 gauge cable 6 feet and some crimps with a heat shrink tube on them they were golden!!!!!!!!! one ip you are the lucky dog you better knock on wood. hope my info helps you out it worked for me and several others.
ssorange 02-03-2005, 03:12 PM Yeah,
can you believe it. One IP for almost 200k miles.... But I screwed up and didn't remote mount the new one. Should I take of the exisiting PDM? Or should I buy a new one and remote mount it?
What do you guys think?
Thanks for your time,
-John
w_huisman 02-03-2005, 03:26 PM You could leave the existing one on the pump and use it as a spare. But if you're going to pull the upper intake, and you can weld a little torx to the end of a piece of flat iron, I'd say take it off the pump and keep it in the glove box as a spare.
WHOAH! LOOKIE AT ALL THESE NEW SMILIES!:cool2: :help: :grd: :Nothing_f :offtopic:

ssorange 02-03-2005, 05:43 PM Hey w_huisman,
so what your saying is that the PDM can be removed w/o taking off the lower intake? All I have to do is make a thin torx wrench?
Thanks for your time,
John
w_huisman 02-03-2005, 07:15 PM I made such a wrench once to try and tighten my pmd mounting screws on the pump to buy me a few more miles outta my pmd. But I'm not sure there's enough room between the pmd and the lower intake to back the screws out. Somebody here oughta know though.
Take a look at the pmd and how close it is to the lower intake. You'll see what I mean.
Turbine Doc 02-03-2005, 08:10 PM Several have claimed to have done it, making special wrench, on single thermostat possibly, I gave up and bought remote mount for my dual thermostat one.
MrTailLight 02-03-2005, 08:47 PM lets hear it out there from someone that has removed the PMD with out taking off the intake......how did you do it?
how did you fab a tol to get the lower screws out?
i would really like to know, as this weekend, i am tearing mine down just to get ths PMD out and relocate it.
ssorange 02-11-2005, 02:15 PM bump....bump
16gaSxS 02-11-2005, 06:32 PM There used to be a Diesel wrench over at The Page a few years back who claimed he could change a PMD by losening the the pump nuts and turning the pump. I gave it a go but could make it happen thats when I put a Beta cooler on the mainifold. (BIG MISTAKE). :badidea:
Just remote mount it in a cool spot and you will be better served.
