I'm a new first time diesel owner of a 2005 3/4 ton silverado. Not knowing what to expect from noises I have not heard before driving a gas engine. There is a humming noise that I hear up front starting out a about 25 mph and gets louder once I hit 60 mph and it disappears after that. Has anyone had this problem. It sounds like if the 4x4 drive is engaged. Also when will gas milegae improve? Right now it's about 14 miles per gallon freeway driving.

Answer: Because it doesn't know the words :muahaha:

Seriously now though. Welcome to the forum. You'll have fun here. Check out this thread (http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22802) and you'll see you are not the only one complaining about it, including me.

skoryaro2,
you beat me to the punchline...
You should get better milage after 11,000 miles, this may vary with other trucks. The more milage you put on the better it will get unless you start to add power to the truck and then that is a whole different issue.

trek5200 -

My truck makes all kind of noise going down the road. Much of it (I think) can be attributed to the BFG AT/KO tires that I have. The volume was defintely turned up when I got those last fall. But even before that I have noticed noises, like a humming you have described, but I am not sure what causes them. I have never had any problems and I think everything is ok. I am at 37,500 miles.

Fuel mileage should go up too. Right now mine is a little lower because of the winter fuel in Michigan, but I will average 18-20 in the summer.

Hope this helps.

Greg

I get a humming sound which is most persistent at 58mph. It was much louder when the truck was newer, but now i have 22k mi on it and its barely noticeable.

Thanks for your replys. Heres my update from the dealer so far. Their telling me the noise was coming from the rear differential. they took it apart and found nothing wrong. I did ask them if I was the only one complaining about this. Of course they said yes. I'll be picking it up soon, just can't wait to see what they tell me when I arrive.

You did the right thing. If you have any concerns ask here and then take it in. You start a paper trail and if things keep going wrong with it then there is always a the Lemon law and this only works if you start a paper trail.

:banghead: Here's another update. Got the truck back from the dealer and they told me the noise is gone after they determind that the noise was coming from the differential. Well it didn't go away. The noise is in the engine. I took it to a different dealer and asked if a shop foreman would ride with me to here the noise. At 1700 rpm having the truck in neutral he heard the sound. We also went on a test ride and again he heard the sound. This sound is like hearing an airplane take off. It disappears after it passes the 1700 rpm mark. The shop foreman is now going to test drive a simular truck from their lot to see if it's normal, then he'll start the process of elimination, as I'm doing my elimination of mechanics trying to find a trusting mechanic and shop. I'll keep you all posted once I get the truck back.

I think he's going to hear it on the other '05 he drives. Let us know if you find a cure.

What he says now that the tech is calling it a "harmonic noise". Now they narrowed it down to something not tighten, or maybe something needs to be re-routed. They seem determind to cure this by today.:ro) I'll keep everyone posted.

Please do. It sure would be nice to find a cure.

FYI - don't know if you are dealing with the same noise that we other '05's are dealing with but a while back a tech posted that the heat shield at the bottom of the firewall was too close to the drop-down exhaust pipe causing a "harmonic" sounding noise. He could reach down and push it back slightly which cured the problem.

at around 1700-1800 rpm I to have that loud! humming noise. It sounds like it could be the torque converter. Is anyone else having this problem, if so is it normal?
