: Removing Intake Manifold
Offshore Guy 02-02-2005, 10:57 AM I need to change my PMD. I'm a decent backyard mechanic with reasonably good tools. My questions are "How difficult is removing the intake manifold to get to the injection pump?", "Is there a strong possibility of doing something really damaging like busting a bolt in the head and, if so, what can I do to avoid it?", "Do I need to move the pump and, if so, how do I mark it so it goes back correctly?", "Do I need to have some sort of gasket/heat shield to go under the new PMD or for the intake manifolds and, finally, "If I'm dumb enough to have to ask all these questions should I just take it to a mechanic and shut up?"
Thanks for your help.
quantum mechanic 02-02-2005, 11:16 AM I usually rip an old tshirt up and stuff little wads in the intake runners so no trash falls in. Nothing to mess up 'cept the wire harness can get pinched putting it back on.
IMO, If you know your PMD is bad save yourself alot of work and leave the dead one one the pump and remote mount the new one.
Turbine Doc 02-02-2005, 12:19 PM Ditto to MDTs comments IMO not a matter of if a pump mount will fail, but when, but if you want to pump mount again you only need to remove upper plenum 6 bolts only, I've also found with 97+ HO water & dual therm trucks you get a little more access by removing Belt AC compressor bolts , and move it out of the way a little, be careful to not break the lines there is enough slack in them to move it some & you don't have to bleed the freon.
MrTailLight 02-02-2005, 03:38 PM i agree with both Turbine Doc, & MDT.....just remote mount a new box, and save yourself ALOT of work
just last month i replaced my box, and now i just got the cooler for it and need to tear it all back down again just to get that box out........pain in my arse!
i got my goods from www.ssdieselsupply.com (http://www.ssdieselsupply.com)
lupey6.5 02-02-2005, 03:43 PM if you do move it really move it buy or make an extended harness and move it out of the heat.
Juancho 02-02-2005, 03:55 PM Buy a new PMD and remote mount it outside the engine compartment in front of the radiator.
Turbine Doc 02-02-2005, 04:14 PM One thought at risk again of sounding like a cheerleader, the Heath remote mount kit comes with a long harness for out of bay mounting and 7yr warranty.
w_huisman 02-02-2005, 04:43 PM That 7-year warranty is pretty amazing.
Offshore Guy 02-02-2005, 07:36 PM Thanks for all the responses guys. It sounds like Bill Heath's gonna make a sale. I was trying to save a few bucks but on the other hand I don't feel like going through this every year.
DieselPro 02-02-2005, 08:28 PM Heath doesn't warranty the PMD. That would be Stanadynes problem to correct if it failed.
Turbine Doc 02-02-2005, 11:11 PM I'm pretty sure because Bill bonds his FSD to the cooler/plate with an epoxy he would have to warrant it, doubt Stanadyne would take it back. Here is where I mounted mine http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15663 hard to see the compound in these photos, but sort of looks like JB weld, Bill says it's an epoxy used in airplane industry.
DieselPro 02-02-2005, 11:28 PM That would be a good question to ask. I mixed up my sites as I was thinking of ssdieselsupply. Sorry heath.
I wouldn't warranty a PMD 90 days or first mile which ever comes first.
Turbine Doc 02-02-2005, 11:31 PM Bill reports few comebacks over years he has been selling them, I know of at least one reported on Diesel Page that went bad & he covered as advertised, mine has about 7 mos on it now.
lupey6.5 02-03-2005, 12:36 AM contacted some online industrial heatsink manufacturer bought a scrap for the shipping. drilled and tapped plate for pmd and extended the harness by staggering the cuts and solder splicing. been there two years now doesn't even get hot to the touch w ambient temps in the high 90's.
Juancho 02-03-2005, 01:35 AM You need to get it out of the engine compartment completely.
Turbine Doc 02-03-2005, 04:19 AM Ditto I had 2 fails in just about that location; actually where your ww tank is, is where it was mounted no ww there in later trucks which is why I went the Heath route after the last failure

I have 30,000 miles and 1 1/2 years on mine mounted on the frame cross member about under the seat on the top side.
