: E rated tire question???

It will be time to buy tires again soon. I will be running 265/75/16's with an E load rating. I am wanting a tire with a strong side wall. I'm not sure of all the brands with a 3 ply side wall. I don't want the truck swaying all over the road. I sort of prefer a high mileage all season tire, eventhough I'm not opposed to a good all terrain tire. I would like to keep the cost down as much as possible. Thanks for any and all suggestions!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

I know this is a very subjective topic, but after many sets of tires over 20 years I have developed a great security in using Michelin LTX M&S. My purpose has mainly been towing and general duty construction use.

one interesting thing I've noticed is that all the 285/75-r16 tires that I have looked at have a higher load rating then their 265/75-r16 counterparts. Although this may not be true for all the tires out there just something i noticed the other day.

I'll be looking hard at the new Toyo Open Country H/T's for towing. Have called Toyo and they say they should be released by springtime. 50K milage warranty and will probably go farther. Know a local contractor that has had very good luck with Toyo's and he's not very nice to tires. He has cuts in the sidewalls with no bulging that would have flattened my tires. The construction sites are the hardest on tires and trips to the dump are no better. After the winter season is over, I'm ditching my SteelTex for the Toyo's.

You may want to take a look at the Cooper Discoverer A/T or Discoverer ATR, both available in 265/75-16 load range E.

Coopers are generally available for prices substantially lower than Michelins, and seem to be a good value for the price sensitive.

Bridgestone REVO's
Yokohama I believe does have an E rating

Bridgestone makes a 265 with steel sidewall called R250. Only commercial steel sidewall tire available in a 265 that I know of. They will probably be $200 per out the door, but will really last.

I guess the main thing I'm looking for, is a tire with a good strong side wall to go along with the E rating and good mileage. I don't want the truck to float all over the road like it does with my Nitto AT's. They do wear really well and are quiet though.

Toyo M55, and their new Mud tire come in 285/75/16 E. I also believe their open country AT does also. Someone also mentioned Nitto Terra Grappler AT comes in a E rating for the 285/75/16 size.

I almost bought a set of the Trxus MT's for my old Dodge; they had a E rated 33" tire with a 16.5" wheel. Glad I didn't now...

Why-o-why doesn't BFG make a TA/KO 265/75/16/E tire?

I'm with you on wishing for the KO in LR-E. I replaced my factory 245s with Michelin LTX M&S in 265/75-16 LR-E. Great traction, ride well, don't float, pretty good tire.

Thats why I bought the General AT's. Look just like BFG AT's, Load Range E and almost half the cost ($105) with a 50,000 warranty! :ro)

I recently bought an 02 GMC 2500HD (6.0) and am going to replace the 245's soon. I *may* end up going with a D tire as I won't tow/haul anything heavier than a few streetbikes and would like ot have a little less harsh ride. I am really struggling with 265 or 285. i had 305 on my 1/2 ton once - for 2 WEEKS. They would "float" all over the road and I like to drive 80-85mph about everywhere. Needless to say the handling and my driving habits didn't mix. I am older now and don't drive AS fast, but do NOT want a tire that floats around on me. Have been thinking Mich LTX M/S or BFG A/T on stock wheels.

Any suggestions/comments?

I haven't had any luck. And do they have a 3-ply side wall like the BFG's?
Thanks!

In my opinion and order of preference from a lot of towing miles and DD/Hotshotting
1. Michelin LTX/AT 235-85-16
2. Toyo M-55 235-85-16
3. Michelin LTX M/S 235-85-16
