: Oil Leaking Out Of Rear Hub?

The brake calipers on my rear passenger wheel are full of dark oil. It is not red, so I am pretty sure it is not brake fluid. The inside of the wheel rim is full of oil and there are oil streak down the inside of the tire.

Could this be rear diff fluid leaking out of the wheel bearings?

Thanks.

I had this exact symptom about 4 months ago.

It was the axle seal -- had it fixed at the dealer for about $150.

Good luck!

Jeff

I finally got the seal replaced by the dealer. They also had to replace the parking brake pads, but not the rear disc brake pads.

I drove the truck home (two miles) and the rear wheel was smoking. They did not adjust the parking pads correctly.

Is it just me, or am I surrounded by incompetance!!!

Why don't you guys just do the seals yourself? It's not a difficult procedure espically if the dealer is only charging $150!

Why don't you guys just do the seals yourself? It's not a difficult procedure espically if the dealer is only charging $150!Why would I want to fix problems that are covered under warranty? What if the bearing has excessive play and done damage to the hub or diff housing? Thats when the dealer tells you "you had this apart? too bad your likely to have done this damage" then you're S.O.L.

I'm talking about the guys that paid $150 to have it done. Unless that would have been the cost if not under warranty, they didn't say though.

I know how warranties work, thanks for the lesson though.

adamcole,

My right rear seal started leaking a couple weeks ago. I have an '01 with about 90,000 miles. Is the seal fairly easy to replace? If so, could you post some general instructions? I got the same quote from the dealer- about $150.00- which I don't have right now.
Thanks.

The axle has to be removed and to do that you have to get into the differential to remove the c-clip, press the bearing off and then back on after the seal is replaced. For $150 I'll let someone else do it.

You don't have to get into the differential, just take the wheel off. Remove the brake caliper. Unbolt the shaft, pull it out. Remove the clip, pull the little square pin out. Remove the nut. Pull the hub off and the seal is right there. When you put it back together make sure you tighten the nut all the way and then back it off a little.(you do need a special socket for this nut, or stick something between it and the hub and use the hub to turn it). I hope I wasn't confusing.

Later, Wheatfield.

Yeah what he said. I haven't got to tear into my rear end too much yet, but I've torn into plenty of other axles. They're not hard to work on.

Also I wasn't aware these full floater rear ends had c-clips on them I thought they bolted to the hub like all other full floaters.

A rear wheel seal on our full floater rear ends is a piece of cake, far easier to on than a semi-floater 1/2 ton rear end. I have had to do one myself, and it is an hour job.....with a floor jack and basic tools.
