: Diff fluid changes - 6.5 related of course
chrisk1500 03-28-2008, 05:43 PM Hey Guys,
I have been searching for the better part of 2 hours on 56k and I can't find the info that I need even though I know I have seen it posted before :(
I plan on changing both of my diffs to run synthetic fluid. I can't find capacities in my owner's manual or my service manuals for the diffs.
How much fluid do I need for:
a) front diff?
b) rear diff?
Thanks :)
Edit - I have this in the 6.5 section because I am not sure if our front and rear diffs are of a different capacity than the 6.2/6.6 guys...
Paveltolz 03-28-2008, 06:27 PM Sorry, My FAQ Searches are coming up with techniques instead of capacity. Haynes only says to fill "until it's level with the bottom of the plug hole." Not much help when you're in need of a closer estimate given the price of the synthetics. Perhaps measuring what comes out and plan for a little extra?
chrisk1500 03-28-2008, 06:31 PM Problem with that method is that I live out in the sticks. Going into the 'big city' is a once or twice a week kind of thing.
I was hoping for some numbers before I run in tonight.
I am guessing at 3 quarts each (front and rear) but I can't find any good information anywhere. My Haynes manual isn't worth the paper it is printed on, my owner's manual only gives oil and trans capacities, and my google searches are turning up blanks too.
Someone has to have done this recently and remember how much 80/90 weight they needed...
teroma25 03-28-2008, 06:34 PM I just did it, but don't know how much it took. Wasn't much I know that. I'll have a look here and see...
JMJNet 03-28-2008, 06:36 PM Go to this amsoil website. They have all the information.

Perfect!
Thanks :D
Now what the hell is a pint?...lol
acesneights1 03-28-2008, 06:40 PM Mr. No Searchy say....:D
Front diff:
8 1/4 ring= 2 Liters or 4.5 Pints
9 1/4 Ring=2.8 Liters or 6 Pints
This is out of the GM Factory manual for a 95.
There are way to many rear diffs to type. Post which one you have and I'll look it up.
Also the fliud recommended by GM 80 W 90 GL5 Gear
yachtcare 03-28-2008, 06:41 PM Pint= 1/2 quart
6 pints = 3 quarts
My 14 bolt rear took just under 3 quarts when I did it last week
chrisk1500 03-28-2008, 06:46 PM Alright Mr. No Searchy...
Why does the GM manual differ from the Amsoil site? *sigh*
Amsoil says my front diff takes 3.6 pints - your manual says 6 pints....HUGE difference...
Does the manual take into consideration residual oil or is it a 'new' fill?
What a PITA...
BTW - I have the 14 bolt 9.5" rear (open - no need for the additive).
Thanks
acesneights1 03-28-2008, 06:48 PM I don't know but you have a 95 and this is the factory gm shop manual for the 95. I've never done it myself.
chrisk1500 03-28-2008, 06:49 PM I guess I will go by the manual's #s and have extra fluid on hand.
What does the manual say for the transfer case? Amsoil says 3 pints.
chrisk1500 03-28-2008, 06:50 PM Yacht - your numbers look right for the rear diff then - thanks!
acesneights1 03-28-2008, 06:50 PM 9 1/2 inch ring gear for rear diff=2.7 Liters or 5.5 pints
acesneights1 03-28-2008, 06:51 PM I'm getting yelled at. I'll look it up after dinner. Give me a half hour...:D
chrisk1500 03-28-2008, 06:51 PM So far so good.
What about the transfer case?
chrisk1500 03-28-2008, 06:51 PM I don't have that kind of time....I'm going to town in 5 minutes...
acesneights1 03-28-2008, 06:53 PM which transfer case 6 listed
chrisk1500 03-28-2008, 06:54 PM NP 241 I believe...
acesneights1 03-28-2008, 06:56 PM NP241=2.13L or 4.5 pints dextron III. Oooh I'm in trouble lata.:D
chrisk1500 03-28-2008, 06:57 PM Thanks Aces!
I'm outta here...
acesneights1 03-28-2008, 09:34 PM No problem. I have the entire set(I think) of 95 gm factory manuals if you need anything. I bought them when I was trying to figure out my cruise.
