Here's a single that I just put on my buddies truck before winter. It's a single 5"x48" stack. The truck already had 5" exhaust, so I cut it off, installed a short piece of 5" flex pipe (so I could mount the stack solid), a 5" elbow, and whallah! No muffler and it actually sounds about the same as it did with the full system on it (with muffler). I did his first before I tackled mine...........It's my old truck and I like to use it as my guineu pig!! I plan to run 4" for mine (already bought it all). My stack is a 4" into 5"x48. I hope to squeeze a muffler in between though.

Also one of my trencher and one of my compressor. You said single stacks, right??? Had to do it :D.

You can get internal flappers for mitre cuts. Go to a shop for semi's. got have them on our peterbuilt.

yea the stack i have is a striat one, at what angle did you cut it at, or what is ur measurement from the tip to the bottom, and what is you measurment from the shortest part?

jmg343
03-27-2008, 08:51 PM
I dont know exact measurments. The cut is a 45* angle and the top of the stack (highest point) is about level with the top of the cab. I wouldnt mind making it a hair taller though.

the internal flappers have a band that sets down in the stack. They have what is like a set screw and when you tighten it down it expands the band. It expands enough to secure in the stack. You just need to center before you tighten. we have 7 inch stacks. The only problem is the hinge will stick from the soot so you need to clean is every so often or the flapper will stick open. We got our from IOWA 80. they have a web site. they are kinda pricey. We paid around $300 a set but they are 7 inch and stainless.

how are you all mounting them to the bed?

how are you all mounting them to the bed?

I used a Ubolt style stainless clamp on the top and made a bracket out of 1.5" square tubing to mount it to the bed. (All I had and was in a hurry). I drilled holes and ran the threads through the tubing and nutted them inside, then mounted the tubing to the bed with a small piece of flat bar and 4 self tappers. For the bottom, another clamp, but secured to the bottom of the bed with conduit style straps. Worked ok for temporarily-still is holding up.

I plan do do it a little differently on mine. I'm using a stainless band type clamp with a single bolt through the center horizontally on the cab side. I was planning to then just use a small 90 deg bracket to mount to the bed with some self tappers, then bolt it to the pipe with the bolt for the bandclamp secured to the 90 bracket. Make sense??? The bottom isn't really necessary, but I may try to do something underneath with the 4" 90 to the frame somewhere.....or try and re-use a stock hanger closeby. I'll mock it up and take pics if you'd like.

X2.

As for fumes. Ive never had a problem. With the windows down, in reverse, I can sometimes catch a whiff of diesel fumes, other than that its never been a bother.

Ill try to get some pics of mine today. Basiclly its just a real nice band clamp that goes around the pipe, then it has an "H" like bracket coming off of it with two bolts on each end of the "H" I just drilled some small holes in the wall of the bed (the one adjacent to the cab) and put the bolts through those holes, then secured them with some washers and nuts. Its firm and secure, doesnt rattle and looks clean. This is what mine is like and how I did it, not sure if others are the same. The clamp at the Peterbuilt shop was not cheap.

on mine i used a piece of flat stock 1/8th or thinner, i welded it to form T i bolted the top left to right ears of the T to the front upper bed rail. i then placed the stack against the T and ran a one inch thick band clamp from the chrome shop around the pipe and slid it up and over the bottom part of the T that sticks down. now it is firmly mounted to the bed and i utilized regular ss band clamps on th bottom and they wont move at all. understand???

I just mounted mine with a chrome u-bolt style exhaust clamp, it was like 8 bucks. Put that around the stack, tighten it down, then take a barrel nut and put on each side of the u-bolt, drill 2 holes in the front of the bed and run a b olt from between the cab and bed and thread them into the barrel nuts. Cheap, looks fine and it's stout. Worked for me.

Shoved mine up in the corner, squeezed a 4" bend in between the bed and the frame.

ok thanks guys, i got the stack cut today, and im waiting for the 4 to 5 adapter, i think im either going to weld a flange on the adapter and bolt it to the bed or use a band clamp, and make a 90 thats a good idea.

A Pete clamp is a chrome clamp you buy at Peterbilt for $80. I was lucky and have a good friend (Renodmax) who gave it too me. It goes around the stack and it has a flat side you bolt to the top of the bed

You can get everything youd need at a big truck supply shop.
My stack is mounted with a really nice chrome band that clamps around the stack at the top of the bed, It mounts to the top of the bed rail.

I guess ill snap a pic tomorrow night for u fellers

Some people that have been in my truck have said that it is and have asked "how you can you stand this, especially on long drives?" Personally it doesnt bother me and I kinda like it. Also, those people that have found it obnoxious and have asked or commented about it are usually the first to be lulled asleep by the sweet lullaby of my lly.

So what did you do inside the tool box to guard against melting things? Did you make some sort of heat shield? Do it leak? I'm REALLY thinking about going to a stack. I'm in the process of making my own 4" downpipe for the LB7, and when its done, i'm going stack i think. A single 6 is what i was wanting to do, but the only thing thats holding me back is i dont like how they look with the tool box setting back from the cab. You might have just solved my problems! Thanks again, and sorry for the questions. If you have some more pictures of inside the tool box that would be great! Maybe some pics on how that flapper connects. Thanks again.

how did you get your exhaust pointed up? elbow or flex pipe? does napa sell adaptors? thanks

jmg343

I was able to get everything at the Pete dealership I went to. Flex, elbows, clamps, you name it. If they didnt stock it they could order it. Id like to redo mine with an elbow, but right now it is done with flex. It does just fine, but the elbow would look cleaner for those that crawl under the truck to check it out.

I used both flex and an elbow. The only reason that I used flex was b/c the stack is mounted solid plus then I could kick it as close to the frame as I could without a 15 degree or something. They do carry the clamps to go from flex to pipe too. Worked real nice. I'm not pushing NAPA by any means, but that's where I get a lot of stuff for my equipment, trucks, trailers, etc... The one here carries a lot of commercial stuff. They always have the filters I need, 4" round LED lights, hyd. fittings/hoses, etc... They take good care of me and if it's not on the shelf, they get it right away. I feel that it's much cheaper than if I was to go to a name brand dealer. It's just convenient for me that's all.

jmg343
04-03-2008, 09:59 PM
Id go to Napa too if there was a Napa truck center near me. I agree that it would be less expensive and their truck centers usually do have a great array of products and what you need, they tend to be pretty knowledgable too. Unfortunately there is not one near here.
