I have friend with a 97 chevy 1/2 ton 4 x4 with a 4l60e. The dealership replaced it with a SRTA trans. They come with a 3 yr 50,000 mile warranty. The tranny fluid is turning that slight brown color and the fluid is starting to smell burnt. With my experience with that trans, once it starts to smell like that the tranny is already on it's way out. What should he do? If he takes it to the stealership will they tell him since it is still shifting ok, there is nothing they will do about it, or just change the fluid? Since they supposedly fixed the problem with that tranny, should it still burn the fluid? It has a about 33,000 miles on the trans. No towing, carries around 600 LBS of tools in the back all of the time. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

That's what I told him, I was just wondering if anyone knew what the dealerships policy is/was on this and if anyone had any up to date info on the new SRTA trans that chevy was installing. Thanks for the reply.

SRTA trans comes with a 3yr 50k warranty from time of install and is covered at any GM dealer with 0 deductable. They wont tear into it for dark fluid. They will if your paying the teardown though, if they find something, they fix. If not, you pay.

I was under the impression that the trans are pre-built. They don't do anything to them but swap them out with the old one. What is the best way ;) :secret: to make sure that a new one is installed?

have it fail beyond the point of repair. They will do a cost analysis on it after teardown and go from there. No such thing as a freebie trans....
