the only problem with mileage quotes on those things is that there aren't enough #'s on the odometer to know for sure if its at 87k, 187k, or 287k the 6.2 will probably run the same at any interval. all you can really do is check the oil fill pipe for excessive blowby and use a mirror to see if its unburned fuel or steam coming out. steam would be from coolant meaning a leaking head gasket.

Is it common for all diesels to smoke a little on start up?Yeah, especially on 6.2s ;)

It's a Rotary Distributor injection pump with a mechanical lift pump.

Another good check is to pull the radiator cap before starting engine. Start engine and allow it to come up to opperating temp. Look at coolant in radiatior. Look for bubbles, make sure coolant it to the top of radiator. Small tiny bubbles can indicate head gaskets starting to go or cracks in heads that are leaking small amounts of combustion into coolant. Large bubbles usually mean head gasket is toast. Don't be affraid of cracks in heads. There have probably been more heads thrown away because of bad advice for cracks between the valves than I can imagine. Of all of the heads I have ever pressure tested with cracks between the valves none ever failed! On the other hand, a crack on the flat surface of the head is very bad.:grd:

Alright,thanks...I have heard of doing that a long time ago but had forgotten about it.

Also, this is a stock truck no lift or anything, without seeing it but assuming its in fair or good condition ya think 4,400 is any where close to what this type of truck usually sells for?

a mirror will fog up if the blowby smoke is steam from coolant.

it will not condensate on the glass like water vapor will.
