Has anyone tried the Dr Performance Predator? I'm looking for more power while pulling my camper and boat combination. I have removed my muffler and was not planning on putting a 4" exhaust on.
The things I can find on the net about it just say it doesn't increase EGT's. Not alot of info about it out there. Just wondering if it's going to strain my tranny?
Thanks

I have been a diesel enthusiast since this uprating craze began. It will start a riot with people that dont know any better. But from me to you. Stay away from doctor performance.
From his personality to his claims. Something isnt jiving. He was sued several years back by Banks and banks won. DR P was making up lies. The court agreed. It is my opinion that he grossly misrepresented his products too. A local representive was selling, what appeared to me, rv275s claiming they were a fancy aftermarket injector for a whole lot more money. Gauged em and they were exactly the same guage as 275s. Hmm. I think his practices very questionable and have heard too many horror stories about the service. I competed with a truck with a 3000 dollar dr p performance upgrade. My truck had 1200 dollars worth of goodies. Mine performed better. Think what you will. This is only my personal experience im relating. Also dont be confused about the doctor part. It appears he was a veterinarian at one time. Just one mans opinion.

Same thing minus his name. Probably a better price too.
Id highly recommend the edge ez if your looking for a mild boost in hp. http://search.ebay.com/edge-ez_W0QQfkrZ1QQfromZR8 can buy it now for 3 and a quarter. The ez is simple and reliable. Good bang for the buck.
If you want more edge comp and TST are good names to go with. Even the ez which is about as mild as you can get will stress an auto.
P.S. check out these websites.

The powermax might look a little cheesey but its a good box.
A very large percentage of dieselers in the know go with one or the other of these products.
I remembered what drp lied about. He said he could increase the hp output without increasing the fueling. So more hp minus the overfueling. Good idea. Just not whats really going on. Everybody overfuels. There is an underfueling setting on the edge comp boxes though. Different map less fuel.

Thank You very much for the input. I knew something had to be a little questionable with the product. It didn't make much sense less fuel more HP and won't effect egt's. Great forum.
I know I could probably search and find info about Superchips programmer, but what do you think about it compared to edge ez? I can get the superchips for around 315.00.

Superchips is a big name for psd and dmax. Not for the cummins. Trust me the edge comp or the tst powermax will be more than you need. Like I said though. They will stress the auto. The best thing to do if you go up to this level. Start with a tc and vb. I got away with it. You might not. I was pushin around 500hp flywheel and the tranny took it for 40k miles. The trick is to drive real hard. Keeps the line pressure up. The two weak links for the tranny is line pressure(leaky valve body) and a junk torque converter. Other than that the tranny can take a lot of abuse if you do it just right. Mine would lay rubber into od, both tires not a one wheel wonder. Funny to watch if youve never seen a fast diesel before.

Ok...you talked me into it....i will go with the edge comp box. You say start with a tc and vb. Are you talking about replacing my torque converter and valve body on the tranny? Are you saying do this prior to the upgrade?
Can I run above stage 1 without 4" exhaust? or should i put a pyrometer on the exhaust to see how bad it is?
I'm not a total dumb*$$, but just want to be as nice to my truck as possible, but have fun driving and towing with it.

There are people who say the exhaust isnt neccesary. I always did the exhaust. I like the sound of stainless steel over the sound of aluminum. Stainless costs twice as much. Listen to em both and take your pick. Guages are first. If you arent runnin hot I cant justify the extra expense. A simple straight through muffler or a muffler delete would remove any restriction in your system. The other thing is an oxygen catalyst. We call it a resonator but it is emissions equipment. Never had any muffler shop argue about removing it. It is not honeycomb material like a cat. You can stick your arm straight through it.
The tranny will let you know right away if it wants the upgrade. Do the upgrade when the tranny tells you. If your tranny starts to act funny turn the box off immediately and fix the problem. Dont ride it til it fails. If your torque converter is slipping your truck kinda bobs up and down like its on a rough road. Even when you are on smooth pavement. Most noticeable at lockup near 50 mph. The trick is more fuel. Drive hard. Its cheaper just to do the torque converter and valvebody without the rebuild. Though a rebuild makes em run pretty sweet. I recommend dtt or ats. Dtt is my personal favorite. Do your homework.
The edge comp it kindof a two stage box. Its an ez if you dont hook up the pump wire. If you do hook up the pump wire its a comp. The pump wire causes catastrophic injection pump failure for about 2 or 3 percent of people that hook it up. Caused by a weak pump. The wire pushes it over the edge. Edge haha.
Next line of business. You are delivering more fuel. Do you have the fuel to deliver? Check your pressure. I used a dedicated electronic fuel guage. Do not starve your injection pump from fuel. That was an 1800 dollar lesson I got to learn myself. I checked the pressure before an aftermarket fuel filter and not after. Check the pressure after the filter. I had negative fuel pressure. It causes cavitation. Wildcat (now out of business I hear) made a 30 dollar kit to check the pressure. It is wise to check it every oil change if you dont have a dedicated guage. The two most important for this truck are egts and fuel pressure.
I was runnin some hot injectors and a drag comp. Wound up sticking an additional fuel pump on to deliver more fuel. Wasnt getting enough with just one. Costed 130 dollars put it on myself. I bought it from wildcat. Another nice piece of technology is the discreet wire tap that replaces the top plate on the injection pump blue chip makes it. For those that dont mind defrauding the dealership. That ones between you and god.
After you do the box and the tranny upgrades. If you get to feelin that you need more power. There are some very potent injectors on the market now. That dont smoke near as much as the older ones did.

Cant believe I missed the simplest upgrade. The bhaf. Short for big honkin air filter. I bought the shroud to go between it and the turbo. Sold it with my truck. You can get the part number from someone else(im on vacation) they sell it at cummins for 30 or 40 bucks. The filter not the shroud. A member of the tdr used to build the shrouds. They were cool. Dont know if he still makes em.
Dont know if your an old timer who doesnt like to hear the turbo but there is a turbo mod to make it louder. I think it sounds like a freight train. Amused my friends with it. Much more noticeable with the bhaf. There is a snap ring on the inlet of the turbo. It holds a silver washer lookin piece in front of the blades. Its soul purpose is to get rid of the whine. You can take it out and listen to the music. Really simple. I needed a special tool to get the snap ring out. You will not get any performance increase so its totally up to you how loud you like the turbo.

ok, you have got me doing more homework. Edge comp, bhaf, guages and hope all goes well. Thank you for all your time in writing to me and others in this forum. I greatly appreciate your knowledge(from trial and errors!) Thanks
