: Rebuild injectors????
Radrick 03-24-2008, 05:17 PM I just ran a thread about testing new injectors. In the process i heard allot of info about troubles with purchasing the lower priced injectors on ebay. So just for the heck of it I called a friend of mine that works at the local HD diesel injection. He referred me to a guy that used to work there and went out on his own and "is really good with the 6.5 stuff". I gave him a call. He stated that there is no reason to buy new injectors and that allot of the foreign made ones are junk. He said its better to rebuild the ones you have since the housing doesn't wear and when you are done you have a set of injectors that have matching pop off rates and are full tested. I am also looking at needing a new ip since i have both long injector pulse and short injector pulse codes coming up on my computer( I don't remember the code numbers right now). I was told that the short pulse is probably the PMD and the long pulse is probably the plunger sticking. This guy says that the short pulse is most common early with PMD failing but if it keeps running the long pulse code will pop up to. He thinks the new PMD with cure both.
Opinions anyone?????:o: The guy really sounds like he knows his stuff and I do like the idea of having someone to go yell at if it doesn't work out:eek:.
chevylover 03-24-2008, 05:35 PM Mostly, a failing PMD will give you NO code. Okay, sometimes there are these codes, but they don't indicate the failing. First you should try this :
Clear the codes, add a cup of Auto Tranny Fluid into the fuel filter housing, replace the filter with a new one,and add about 1 quart or 1,5 quarts of 2-stroke-oil to a full fuel tank (depends on 26 or 34 gal. tank). Run the ATF once and the 2-stroke-oil with every new full tank. For a try, should you give it till the bext 3-5 full tanks. If everything is fine than (no codes), I recommend to put the 2-stroke-oil in every tank. This less expensive than a new PMD !
If not, you should have a look here : http://www.mamut.net/royh/newsdet9.htm

Thanks for the feed back. I have read allot of threads about the 2stroke oil and the lubricity thread. I considered adding the oil but hear in MN we have 2% bio in our fuel so I am already running a lubricity additive and I am running more of it then the recommended amount of 2 stroke oil. The code is still there. My truck has the original PMD mounted on the ip so I am planning on replacing it anyway. I will do this before the ip and see if it solves the problem.
My bigger issue right now are the injectors. What do you think about having them rebuild verses buying new?
DieselPro 03-24-2008, 07:00 PM I'd listen to that mechanic. Sounds like he knows what's going on pretty well

One of the things i liked was when i asked him how much an ip was he gave me the price but then started asking questions. Then the reply to my answers was that he didn't think i need the ip just a new pmd. when i asked how much the pmd was he said I would be able to do better online or threw a retailer. his prices were high on them. so he talked me out of giving him $1000.00.
mitchedo 03-24-2008, 07:56 PM If I found a guy like that around here, he'd have a new customer!

$240 to rebuild the injectors and of course no freight and fully tested to boot. It's definitely got me thinking.
Torque454 03-24-2008, 08:29 PM The shop i go to locally has injectors for $26 each rebuilt. They want $300 to install them. Dont know if they'd give me that price if i just bought them and did it myself or not. Thats $208. They did an awesome job last time they worked on this thing (the new-er IP it has). I'm pretty convinced they'd do me right if i got injectors from them.
