: how long is the warranty on an injection pump?
73rx3 01-31-2005, 11:10 AM Hi,
i have a 99 3500 hd ,and it has the 6.5 td engine.
has 166,000 on it. and the service engine light is on,so i had a friend put the computer on it and it says the injection pump calibration, what does that mean?
truck runs fine, starts fine, he reset the light, and its back on.
someone told me i might be able to get it fixed from GM,that there was trouble with the pump.
thanks Michael
Turbine Doc 01-31-2005, 04:24 PM Mike,
Last warranty offering was 120K mi & 12 yr IIRC, looks like you are out of periodicity, Zactly what codes you seeing, several codes sympathetic to IP fault can send you down the wrong path to troubleshoot, search the FAQs at the top of this heading for your codes, and post them here we might be able to prevent you swapping wrong part for big $$$
BTW Welcome to the site, check the welcome notes as well for more info how to use the site.
73rx3 01-31-2005, 06:02 PM Hi Turbine Doc,
thanks.
the site is neat.:cool2:
just what i need!
i have a 1988 gmc 4 x 4 1 ton with the 6.2, the 1999 3500 hd flatbed with the 6.5 TD, and a 2003 3500 4 x 4 dump truck with the duramax!):h
i went back to my friend today, and he put the computer back on it.
and these were the codes.
PO 216 B Injection Timing Circuit
P 1214 B Injection Pump Timing Off set
thanks Michael
Texas Diesel Guy 01-31-2005, 06:42 PM Hmmm...looks like possible stepper motor failure. If it were just a static timing problem/TDC offset then you would get an 0251 (Pump Rotor Cam Problem) and usually the 1214 too. But an 0216 is electrical circuit fault to the stepper motor. This can be changed on the vehicle, but it may be hard to find someone you can convince to do if for you, they'll tell you its either not possible or not reccommended, but I've done it a half dozen times.
73rx3 01-31-2005, 07:01 PM Hi TDG,
off hand i don't know if anyone that can do it.
i spoke to one shop, and he told me i need a new injector pump.
where can i get the part from?
i could buy it and try it myself. and with help from the board :)
i should be able to do it! thanks Michael
bowtie65 02-01-2005, 05:28 PM :( sounds to me like your ip is heading south. just threw same codes myself several months ago and nursed my pump for about 2 months until it finally bit it. i finally got a new ip plus install and timing adjustment half gallon of stanadyne fuel conditionerfor a mere 1350.00us dollars without touching a wrench. a bargain in my book considering what an ip costs. you can baby your pump if you like but you might cause other damage to driveline with the bucking that goes with this problem. some might say to check pmd but it is very unlikely that you would throw these codes. bad pmd's dont usually throw codes unless something else is wrong. i would get pump checked asap.
73rx3 02-01-2005, 09:21 PM Hi Bowtie,
so,when the IP goes the truck doesn't run?
i spoke to a diesel person, and he said about $1500.00 to do the job. :(
i would like to have it fixed, just have to find someone to do it. thanks Michael
Turbine Doc 02-01-2005, 09:31 PM Before going there we need to do some diagnostics 1st, what have you done so far to troubleshoot, TDG, Diesel-Pro with the codes referenced what do you guys recommend in addition to what is contained in this thread found in the FAQs section (subtle hint to others new to the site ;) )
http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19990
Do you have any answers to these questions from your other thread similar topic (Same as your code post ???, same truck ???)
What did your friend read the codes with, hopefully with a diagnostic scan tool and there is some more info we can use, time actual & desired would be handy, pulse width, fuel delivery, water temp, is this code active always or can it be cleared and it comes on immediately or comes back on at a certain rpm or after a period of time, happen more frequently on cold days.
The electronic IP is hard to diagnose without a scan tool & just codes, are you having any other problems or just codes, a bad PMD does not set codes but in some cases causes sympathetic codes drawing your attention to the IP when root cause is something else like something as simple as a wiring problem.
bowtie65 02-02-2005, 06:54 PM , the ip will run for a while when its on the brink just depends on how you treat it. i did an online search under the word stanadyne and found a great diesel mechanic to wrench on mine and he did a fantastic job. its hard to seperate from that kind of money but if you love your truck like i love mine you will take the plunge.you can use the stanadyne fuel additive to buy some time but it is not fun getting stuck on the road.bowtie65 95k-3500 4x4 ext. cab 3"st.thru exhaust banks chip heath turbo master #9 resistor a boat load of power and no toys to haul.
bowtie65 02-02-2005, 07:01 PM 73rx3, you could also check all the grounds including ground on ip itself. sometimes a wire might look good but salt and dirt may corrode wire inside insulation. try an ohmmeter and ring out all grounds first if all good chances are the scan tool was right. just went thru it myself.
73rx3 02-02-2005, 08:41 PM Hi Bowtie,
thanks.
over the weekend i will check out the wiring.
i have to do a few thing to the truck .
i was thinking about buying an injectioon pump on ebay, and when the time comes,i was gonna try to install it myself.
i don't mind paying someone, but, seems like there aren't many people around here that work on them . Michael
bowtie65 02-02-2005, 10:03 PM i was gonna put one on myself but then i found about the whole injection pump timing thing and i scrapped that idea. as far as e-bay dont ever buy a used pump because you are going to buy someone elses problems more than likely. go for a warranty above all else. please take my advice on this one. why do you think there are so many used ip's on e-bay. be careful.the reason not many people work on them is they are tricky to set up. set up timing set for max power at boost etc...
Turbine Doc 02-02-2005, 10:55 PM Timing not as rough as it's made out to be, GM tech 2 & T2 copies are optimal tool, snap-on MT2500 can also work.
bowtie65 02-02-2005, 11:15 PM turbine doc, the guys trying to save cash. how much do these tools cost? is it worth the expense to purchase or to get somebody who knows what they are doing? just a friendly question that might surprise me. i have no idea what they cost or if you can rent them.if i knew someone who had them it may have been worth it i guess.
Turbine Doc 02-02-2005, 11:25 PM Many shops now have GM T2 or T2 clones, he might know a buddy with a shop, nearly everybody else has a MT2500 I bought my MT2500 used at seriously way below market.
Snap on is fixing to come out with a new model scanner, old ones like mine will be obsolete no longer supportable, should be a lot of those at very affordable prices for our "antiques" needs when they upgrade to new stuff.
QM is the king of making a dollar stretch IIRC he has changed a few IPs, remember TDC offset won't change unless commanded to do it in late model, so if he marks IP and gets it ball park it should run, may have to visit a local shop to get timing done for a couple of bucks but the labor big $$$ part is in the actual R&R of the IP.
Texas Diesel Guy 02-02-2005, 11:26 PM i was thinking about buying an injection pump on ebay, and when the time comes,i was gonna try to install it myself.
Easy way to see if its the stepper motor itself that has actually failed. You can just see the foot on the bottom of the stepper motor with a flashlight. Have someone rev the truck up for you and watch to see if it moves, if it does, then its working and you have other pump problems. If it doesn't move, its probably siezed and replacing it would be the cheapest way out.
If you can buy a DS pump for $20 bucks or whatever the cheapest ones are going for on ebay, I say go for, but don't install it. Rather, rob the stepper motor off it, noting how it is mounted to the pump and install it on your truck. It's really a simple procedure, I could easily walk you through it but with a little patience, I'm sure you could figure it out.
bowtie65 02-02-2005, 11:33 PM turbo doc, if you change the ip is there not a chance that your prom may not work with certain pumps or is that a fallicy? from what i understand some pumps dont jive with certain proms.
Texas Diesel Guy 02-02-2005, 11:35 PM '94 is the only year model that has that concern. And as long as you swap a 5068 for a 5068 or a 5067/5288/5459/5521 for any of those, you got nothing to worry about as far as PROM/ECM compatibility.
73rx3 02-03-2005, 06:57 AM Hi Guys,
thanks for all the imput.
i wouldn't buy a used pump. there are a few new ones on ebay, there's one at $400.00
and another that has a buy it now for $825.00
the truck seems to run fine, doesn't stall. lst night i used it and went $125 miles, and its fine. i just thought since the sevice engine light is on,that it was probably a sensor i could replace.
i don't mind paying to have it done, i just can't find anyone.
the one place i called,he told me the injector pump is bad,and a reman pump is $1500.00, and $500.00 labor + tax.
thats seems steep!
the truck is a 19 ' rollback, i don't use it everyday, but, i don't wanna break down ,and have to have it towed. probably would cost alot since its so long.
Michael
w_huisman 02-03-2005, 10:09 AM Does anyone have a link to or a picture of an injection pump with all the parts lableled? Like the pictures of parts you see on the dealers/parts counter computers?
bowtie65 02-03-2005, 04:41 PM thanks texas diesel guy, im not sure about this but since some 95 trucks were built in 94 could you still have prom compatibility problems with pumps not being able to see the lable on the ip? food for thought. who knows what they throw in these trucks.
73rx3 02-03-2005, 05:55 PM Hi,
would someone have a picture of the stepper? Michael
