so i had to pull my brothers heavy ass 2wd duramax out in about 90* weather and it was stuck real bad and i pegged out my trans temp guage at 250* and who knows how much hotter it got after the guage pegged out. so i need to change my fluid, its a built 460e and it has 3 trans coolers, my brother changed his in his allison when he did a shift kit and i was just wondering if i could use the same trick he did with disconecting the trans cooler and putting it in drive and had me fill it with fresh stuff as the old stuff drained out?

also the guy at autozone said id need 5 quartes to fill my trans but i remember my brother needed like 20 to do his and as big as an allsion is can it really hold that much more than my 4l60? i ended up buying 9 courts to cover my trans and coolers and i will be doing my t-case also.

o yea and of course i did get a new filter too

5 quarts is what it take to fill the pan after a filter change, The pan doesnt even hold half of the actaul fluid in your trans though, The TC and similar is what hold the majority. When i was at the dealership we flushed them out with 16 quarts, That was using our flush machine.

If you can keep new fluid going in as fast as it is coming out then yes removing the cooler line will work, I dont think you could feed it as fast as it comes out though and you dont want it to go dry.

It looks like you can do it that way according to amsoil

they hold 12 quarts, you usually flush 14-16 quarts to make sure all the old fluid gets out. When you only change the filter in the pan you only get about 4-6 quarts out.

right now its looking like i dont have the money to buy any fluid to put back in but what i did buy was 9 quarts of Castrol and i have 6$ left so right now i cant afford to get the other 8 quarts im going to need... what atf would you recomend?

i will get a paycheck today but that should just barely put gas in my tank and still leave me around 20$ short on insurance so ill have to see, anybody know of any websites were i could possibly save money over the local parts store? summits cheapest atf is like 8$ a court!

too bad the amsoil bulletin doesnt tell you about the shift cable bracket that is in the way and to be care full not to break the shift solenoids near the back of the valve body.

pulling the pan. it's not a big deal just pop the clip out and slide the linkage off the trans.

youll see when you do it, it doesnt just come out the bracket is in the way you need to either unbolt it (which is a pita and a waste of time) or you can take a big pair of chanel locks and put the pliers aound the front driveshaft and the bracket and pinch them together to get the pan out with out breaking anything. oh yeah and you may need to bend the heat sheild out a little on the other side. if you can get the pan down without moving the bracket I will be impressed.

Dropping the pan.

Remove the clip holding the shift cable to the bracket, Gently pry the other end of the cable off of the arm, Then remove the cable and let it hang. Take a prybar and bend the bracket away from the trans a little bit, tweak the whole thing not just one section of it. Now go to the other side of the trans and bend the servo heat shields or whatever it is back away from the trans like you just did to the cable holder. This makes getting the trans pan out ALOT easier and when you get it back in there bend everything back to the way it was.

if it's in real tough shape (burnt, etc) i would consider a flush. it's not too bad, i did it along with a halfass drain plug install in the pan in my girlfriend's garage with a pit.but your truck should be tall enough to just crawl underneath, assuming it's the one in your sig.

its only got 20k miles on it and it was built for 700hp so im sure its in fine shape but the trans was heated past 250* and it needs to be fully flushed out. im doing the t case bacasue it needs a new slip yoke seal and idk how much is lost in their so ill just change it.
