: problem stalling but still not sure.
awake1630 03-22-2008, 08:43 PM A while ago i was having a problem with the truck stalling and loosing dash lights. I cleaned all the grounds and and replaced with new connectors. I cleaned my battery terminals and replaced the ignition switch. Truck has been running fine since.
Now the other day i was going down the highway and the truck sputered. It cut out and came back witin the matter of 2 seconds. When it did this the service throttle soon light came on but went out right away.
This has happened 3 times. But on different days.
Any insight would be very helpful.
Thanks
IamDave0887 03-22-2008, 10:12 PM service throttle coming on means something is obviously not working correctly. maybe APP? i've heard its rare that those go bad though. i'd say try cleaning contacts as a first go around because that doesn't cost anything except time. are you sure you got all the grounds? especially the aux grounds (two on trans dipstick ground strap, and two on manifold stud). i connected all for of those "little" grounds together and then crimped an 8 gauge wire into two solid copper terminals and made a crossover that connects from the stud w/ the grounds to the stud w/ the passenger battery negative stud. electricity takes the path of least resistance so i made one when i was troubleshooting my truck.
awake1630 03-23-2008, 12:53 AM i only have 3 auxilary grounds on the back on my motor
2 to the dipstick and 1 to the intake bolt infront of that.
i did clean and re crimp alll those.
IamDave0887 03-23-2008, 08:13 AM only three? any chance one is dangling somewheres? mine were attached but not very well. theres one larger(12 awg or so) black on the intake stud. one smaller(16-18 awg) black wire with a white stripe down the middle on the intake stud. then by the trans dipstick there was another black w/ white stripe wire(16-18 awg) and a tan wire with i believe a black stripe(16-18 awg). i've got a wiring diagram around here somewheres i'll have to find and make sure on the color of the last wire.
EDIT: according to the 1997 wiring diagram i have you should have 4 grounds and the last wire is tan with a white stripe.
awake1630 03-23-2008, 11:48 AM well i have the 2 on the tranny dipstick.
and the larger black one on the intake but no black with white stripe on the intake with the larger wire.
will you wiring diagram tell me where all 4 aux. grounds go to so i can trace them back.
corolla 03-23-2008, 12:23 PM Any codes?
IamDave0887 03-23-2008, 01:30 PM yes the diagram does show where they go. (whats in quotes comes right from the diagram word for word)
one ground from "right top of cylinder head" to the lift pump.(black w/ white stripe)
another from the "right top of cylinder head" to vehicle speed sensor? not sure on that one myself. (black w/ white stripe)
another from the water in fuel sensor to "right top cylinder head"(Black)
one from fuel pump relay to "right top of cylinder head"(black w/ white stripe)
the last one is from the PCM. there are two PCM grounds but they seem to connect together at the same ground point "right top of cylinder head"(tan w/ white stripe and black with white stripe) i'll bet that these two are the ones on the trans dipstick as the color match and they connect at the "same" ground point like in the diagram(when looking at the diagram the two wires appear to physically connect at the same point).
i'm not sure what wire is what but thats where that group of wires ends up. ask corolla(he posted above me) as he gave me the diagram and he can probably read it better that i can. i just used it to find what color wire grounds what. as for the 4 black with a white stripe wires i'm not sure which one goes where but the tan w/ white stripe is a PCM ground. hope this helps.
awake1630 03-23-2008, 02:03 PM is that more then 4 aux. grounds now? just asking a lil confused
IamDave0887 03-23-2008, 07:48 PM thats 5 grounds but two come together somewheres in the harness i'm guessing so you've got 4 wires that should make up your aux grounds.
awake1630 03-24-2008, 12:04 AM in only have three aux grounds on the back of the motor. the two that were on the trans dipstick and the on solid black color on the intake bolt infront of that.
i cant seem to find another aux. ground. This shit is frustrating
awake1630 03-24-2008, 07:56 AM dave can you trace back the black with white stripe wire that goes to the intake and attaches at the same place the solid black wire attaches. That seems to be the one i am missing.
just see where in the harness it comes in.
if you could that would be a big help
joispoi 03-24-2008, 09:01 AM clean the spades on your ecm fuses- another possible culprit.
with the truck running, wiggle all grounds around the tranny dipstick tube. See if you can get the engine to stall. Also, check the ground on the pass side battery where it connects to the fender. This ground is very important.
IamDave0887 03-24-2008, 09:03 AM the wire isn't very long. it goes right into the split loom covering the harness but i'll check first chance i get. does your lift pump run? one black with white stripe wire seems to ground the lift pump in that location. i'd say lets eliminate one wire at a time because black with a white stripe seems to be a common ground wire color in this case.
awake1630 03-24-2008, 05:37 PM yes the lift pump runs
awake1630 03-25-2008, 03:01 PM what kind of symptons do a throttle pedal give out?
corolla 03-25-2008, 03:13 PM Have you checked your PM (Private Messages)?
awake1630 03-25-2008, 03:17 PM yes i check all that out. but all the grounds are the same color. i think it may be the acc. pedal.
corolla 03-25-2008, 03:24 PM The grounds in the diagram or on the truck?
The diagram shows ECM ground colors of Tan/White and Black/ white.
Just black for the fuel pump relay, the others that all become black/white join in the harness (somewhere).
I would think the acc. pedal would throw a code.
Have you tried unplugging it?
awake1630 03-25-2008, 03:27 PM no i havent tried unplugging it
awake1630 03-25-2008, 03:30 PM but when this happens only the service throttle soon light comes on and then goes off
