: First oil change
Benbovac 03-21-2008, 11:45 PM I am new to the diesel world and loving it except for fuel prices, however I was aware of that going in. My questions is, I have a new LMM with around 400 miles on it and I plan on getting our RV out of storage soon to start our camping season. Should I change the oil before pulling the TT, or wait for the DIC reading to alert me? Dealer is giving me free oil change and suggested against an early change. We will be pulling our TT around 2000 miles in early May. Thanks for any replies.
DirtyMax58 03-21-2008, 11:51 PM some will say do, some will say dont. its mainly just up to you and how you feel. i resisted the temptation of an early service and i just made my first change @ 5K. pulled my TT about 900 miles in last month and hauled a few jobsite trailers a couple hundred miles as well.....and she's still doing just fine.
i personally dont think it is neccessary, but if you feel like you should change it, go ahead. it may not help anything, but it darn sure wont hurt either!!!

I agree, personally i would get a head start by putting synthetic fluids in her and get her off on the right foot, but thats just me. Good luck with your decision cant go wrong either way:D
Arkapigdiesel 03-22-2008, 12:57 AM Dump the factory fill ASAP in order to dump the factory leftovers out of the oil.

x2
This seems to be the most pervasive opinion, but there was a quite heated discussion here about a month ago RE early first change vs. wait for DIC.
As an engine builder, I have alway been a believer in quick first change and I have never suffered an engine failure. At 550 miles, I switched over to Mobil Delvac 1 ESP and am at about 6300 now
Bammer 03-22-2008, 09:10 AM Dump everything from front to back, synthetics for all..
Tom S. 03-22-2008, 09:49 AM Along with the oil, change or at least check the differentials as the factory tends to underfill them and the dealers tend to ignore checking them.
RI Chevy Silveradoman 03-22-2008, 12:57 PM I went 3,000 miles with the original oil from the factory. The factory starts the engines with a certain oil, breaks the rings in and seats them, and then drains the oil out and puts new oil in. I don't see the great need to change out the factory oil so fast, but that is just my opinion, as everyone is entitled to one. I changed the oil at 3K, and then at 10K, and do so about every 7,000 to 7,500 miles.

OldSoldier 03-22-2008, 05:50 PM I went 5k before the first oil change. My dealer says to use the DIC.
